Hi,
Searched The Fast & Furious Forum BUT no thread for KIA Spectra Owner
so, i'm thinking of starting it for sharing info and all kind of knowledge we've learnt
may be we can share lot of things like good/bad workshop, cheaper but good quality accesories etc etc
may be for a start we can introduce our car data like;

1) When & Where you bought it
2) Price (since Spectra went thru some price changed)
2) Colour of Your Spectra
3) Any Major Problem So Far
4) Picture of Your Spectra
5) Spectra Minor Problem
6) Ask Me to add more...

I will add more later...

well , the spectra platform is based on an old mazda platform .
so cannot expect much from it .

it has been discontinued for quite sometime already , only malaysia still making it as people alwasy think as 'altenative to proton' ...while they dont see that it isn't 'altenative to problems'

Sephia owner here...can join ar?? LOL.

Anyway, Sephia is an underpowered and petrol sucking car. But it's very comfortable and quality is way better than Plotong...well at least my imported Sephia....i heard local assembled Spectra got many problems also...sweat.gif..

Anyway, i wouldn't buy a KIA again if u ask me...FC is nightmare.

Btw, mine is 7 year old Sephia...still good. thumbup.gif

fc is on the high side
around 20 cents - 25 cents per km for city driving
highway driving 110-120km/h can be kept under 20 cents

maintenence is quite not on the high side nor low

At least Sephia is fully imported

Mine is 2001 model
the first batch to CKD in Gurun laugh.gif
the first Spectra arrived in Malaysia is the CBU one, nearly RM85K that time
when the CKD model came out, it's around RM79K plus plus
then the cheaper one which is around RM69K plus plus
and now KIA got Spectra Novus model which is around RM78K plus plus

actually the RM69K model is very low in specs
not totally fully leather seat
cassette player, finishing on the door panel is cushion not leather like the previous model
no logo on the window frame so on n so forth

mine is nearly 6 years this year
so far so good, no major problem
timing belt ONLY RM480 changed with my friend, who is a KIA technician
former KIA technician who is opening his own workshop in Kajang
everything is cheaper there
when u go to KIA centre, the price is sky high
for the engine oil, i can get below RM150
and for changing timing belt there might cost u more than RM600

hee-hee....mine is the 69K version. And yes i recently change the timing belt also...can't remember but it's around RM450 plus minus. There this nifty little workshop in Sri Damansara (after the Penchala Toll Plaza/ One Utama) which is run by 2 young guys which were ex-KIA staff.

Still, i think it's more expensive than Plotong or P2 cars....i heard my friend changed his Wira timing belt recently for only RM3xx.

I would say the maintenance is a bit on the high side, but not too high until it's un-affordable. If u go KIA service centre, sure die...kena potong leher guaranteed...

btw, my engine is a bit loud nowadays compared to when it was younger, any tips to fix or remedy this (other than asking me change whole engine!)??

Wise choice. I wouldn't buy another FC sucking machine since petrol price is skyrocketing thanks to Pak Lah.

Last time i bought Sephia, i knew it was petrol sucking, but at that time it was still affordable...(only around RM1.2/litre and TDM only naik a few cents every few years)...so i dun mind paying a little more petrol since i like the car...but nowdays...all signs point to petrol is going up until no-subsidy level soon...when it reaches RM2.6/litre, you'll be crying with a petrol sucking machine....

Now i only use my Sephia as weekend car and to go outstation. City driving i use MYVI.

If ur buying this car mainly for work and city driving, dun have a big budget, need a big loan, then i would seriously suggest u get a cheaper smaller and FC saving car.

AFAIK, stay away from Korean cars....all petrol sucking black hole...Hyundai also the same (ATOS, GETZ) etc. Japanese cars too expensive unless u have 80K budget for a Hinda City/Toyota Vios.

Anyway, it depends on ur budget and purpose.

Yeah, Spectra actually dun have 2nd hand car value
no matter how hard u take care of the car, there's no value in it
it goes to all Korean Cars
but at least, if u have budget, better get Korean Cars than Plotong
just add few bucks & u can own Korean Cars with less pening kapla

My friend who is ex-KIA Technician suggest dun take NAZA cars, suck big time

1. 2001 1st batch of CBU car.
2. Price was 80k+ back then
3. Color is teal
4. Major problems? Cylinder died for no reason (CBU mind you) but it still managed to run on 3, engine died in year 2004 or so. Had to overhaul it, spent 7.5k. Anyway, it was sold in 2005 for 25k and thank god for it.
5. NVH isn't good. Noisy on highway and comfort is only so-so. Engine power is nothing to shout about. Fuel consumption isn't good but normal maintenance was alright, didn't cost that much.

It's a miserable car and resale value is the shiet. I suppose it's marginally better than protons back in 2001. Now, I'd rather buy Proton than another Kia.

Thinking of buying a Spectra but after having read reviews wondering whether it's still a good idea. Is the current model of Spectra still having problems of the earlier versions? Most of the reviews seems to be talking about the older models...

I'm planning to geta spectra5 but been getting a lot of comments saying about the bad FC and expensive spare part.

Is there any Naza Kia owner here that can share with us the price of the service maintenance? The service should be the 1st 1000km, 5000km, 10000km & every subsequent 10000km. Thanks

Hey, is the FC really that bad? I'm driving my father's year 2000 plotong Wira and 40 bucks of RON95 can only last me 160 km in a stop-and-go traffic in this Penang island where I have to stop at 8 freaking traffic lights on a 5km road to go to work. Can't be worse than my current FC, right?

I m driving spectra now.bought used 2006 novus model last year.the FC is not as bad as your dad's wira.
my FC RM40 can go 190 to 200km km for city driving.
hway RM40 can go for 270km - 280km.
comfort is not bad.

if you dont travel that much in the city is ok i guess.
considering the low price of the 2nd hand car.

is your dad's wira that bad?

Yeah, very very bad. Used to pump 30 bucks each time. And I observed it can only go 120km/RM30. Now I pump RM40 each time, can go 160km before I need to go pump again. So yeah, it's really bad. The good thing is since my work place is 5km from house, it's acceptable as the total each month can be kept quite low. But I'm gonna go back to KL to work so I expect to be driving a hell lot more each day, I can't afford to keep up with that Wira's FC.

When I was in Cyberjaya though, RM45-50 on the Wira can last me 300km driving on highway 90km/h all the way.

Also, want to get my own car as depending on father is not very syok. He keeps breathing down my neck and will snap it if anything bad happens to his car.

Saw 1 spectra for sale at 19k and another 23k on autoworld.com.my. Tempted by the price, haha.

iluvena,
haha, i bought the spectra5 less than a month after i made that post. FC at urban driving for 80 bucks will get me approx 400km.

No issues so far, just that I felt that the absorber is giving me signs that it needs a replacement soon. Shouldn't have taken it for touge that often tongue.gif

Wow...thought there'll be no more Spectra threads. Wonder if the Yahoo Spectran is still alive or not.

Just before all the hype of ABS and EBD that potong glamour so much on, KIA Spectra 2002 (the model I have) already have it. What's so special about it? Potong 6yrs down the road boast about EBD while I've been driving with EBD on my 2002 Spectra for that long...I wonder..

No, it doesn't come with airbag. My car is still stock (mostly though, except that I've killed the CAT). Removed the so-called fuel saver and my fuel consumption is RM50 per 300km consistently. I'm working in Subang Jaya, staying in KL.

Parts are getting cheaper now due to competition. However, not all service centers are good. I wouldn't suggest going to Service Centers but try going to agents.

Once, KIA Mega Chan Sow Lin used to be the best service agent in town, but has since degraded with the leaving of their chief mechanics. My car now is still being kept in good condition by one of the chief mechanics there (Mr. Foo - those who serviced their cars there would know him). I intend to change my car suspension next April (2011). Till today, it is still serving me well with no signs of leakage or sorts. However, it has become pretty stiff especially going over bumps.

The only major service was the changing of the car mounting and I did it for 40% lesser than those in service centers and verified original parts. So, if you ask me if Spectra is good, it really depends on where you send the car for service and what you expect of a dated car and how you intend to drive it.

when u bought ur spectra5? i had mine for about 7 months now, quite ok. i tot they are using sports spring and absorber? handling ig good. power is abit less for its weight. donno if USA's 2.0 engine can fit in.

FC wise, rm 70+ can go about 400km, no problem at all. using fully syhthetic oil 10-30W oil.

replaced 1 side mirror plate last month..cost me rm 140. The parts are expensive and not widely available

i send mine to the SC along Jln Pahang, its the nearest to my place, well, nothing much to complain or praise coz its just normal service. Been to the SC in Jln Tandang PJ & Setapak, the queue is way too long.

bobbychin,

april last year. Time to renew my insurance & roadtax, need to spend money again haih. I don't think they're sports spring & absorber, the suspension travel & damping is quite comfy hehe. I'm pretty happy with the power given that the weight is close to 1.3tan but i can feel the lack of power once a 3rd person sits in the car.

That's a pretty good FC compared to mine, no spirited driving? I'm using fully sync as well, the petronas syntium.

side mirror plate?

How many of you actually use the tiptronic? Haha, i find that i seldom use it even when i go for spirited Sunday drive tongue.gif

Didn't expect to see this topic revived.

iluvena,
haha, i bought the spectra5 less than a month after i made that post. FC at urban driving for 80 bucks will get me approx 400km.

No issues so far, just that I felt that the absorber is giving me signs that it needs a replacement soon. Shouldn't have taken it for touge that often tongue.gif
*
eh. yours full tank how many litres ah?
mine 80bucks can get at least 450KM urban drive and most of the time 500KM.
highway drive easily can get 700KM at 110km/h constantly.

i think its sport suspension. some of the online reviews says that, and if you inspect the car, u'll see that the springs are lowered, thick springs and the diameter is big. The suspension travel lenght is very short and stiff. driving on uneven roads at high speed feels kinda good, much better than normal suspension with longer travel.Damping is good too. Cornering wise, i've added a strut tower bar from UR, its ok i guess. Roll is OK, hardly take corners at high speed.

Spectra5's fuel tank is rated 55L, but so far i pump when my meter reaches the lowest bar, can only fill in about 45-47L. I hear there is 8L for spare.

does you forte feels slow at 110kmh? my spectra5 does.110 feels like <100kmh. maybe its the sound insulation.

spectra5 looks small, but have a big fuel tank...i think cefiro 2.0 also having 55L tank

Hi, just to check, is the CAT you mentioning above is the catalytic converter? why do you remove it? or do you mean you ran over a cat?

mine was august, they having price cut that time, and i bought a novus too.

the tiptronic is good when overtaking and climbing hills. The D mode tends to shift to highest gear ASAP,which is good for FC, but u have to drive slow coz lack of power.

my side mirror was hit by a motrcycle, and the mirror broke. the motors and casing is OK, so just to chage the mirror cost rm 140. if change with motors and casing will cost about 400.

iluvena,

I usually fill Rm80 when the warning light comes on, not sure what's the full tank is. I can do 450km at urban too, 480km when really light foot. But then these days the right foot keep pressing the pedal for reasons that I can't explain tongue.gif

bobbychin,

That's interesting, i'll take a look at that when I get the car up on the jack stands. I've heard quite a lot of positive feedback from Spectra5 owners who installed the strut tower bar, saying that the corner improved tremendously. But I didn't go for it coz the chassis can't flex as much & the stress load will be shared by other chassis part of the car.

Added on March 24, 2010, 2:20 pmdamn, 140 is expensive for a mirror. I wonder if we can ask those window/glass shop to cut a new 1 accordingly at a fee of like less than 20? smile.gif

i was thinking about the same for the mirror too. but the glass from local shop is only normal mirror. KIA's mirror is abit wider in angle, and plus..the holder for the mirrir is attached together with the mirror,u'll need that to fix the mirror to the casing. luckily i didn not cut it from local glass shop or i loose a few more ringgits. The original mirror has heater behind it, but so far i didn not notice any buttons to activate them.Any idea?

They are using sports absorbers and springs, that y the car is so low and it has a nice handling/ride feel. so different from those long travel absorbers. but going over a bump with 4 ppl inside u will need to be very careful.

bobbychin,

That's another new thing to me, I'm not aware of the heated side mirror. Maybe you can try switching on the rear windscreen defogger, it could be connected.

The car is too heavy & the roll is too much, but then can't ask for more for a family car hehe.

from USA review this car is actually a sports wagon. and KIA's intention is to capture the young buyers who wants a sporty car with cheap price. well , US got 2.0 but we only get 1.6, not so sporty here or else we can "cucuk" VW GTI?

btw, i find spectra5 quite similar to VW GTI in shape.

Yup, can't agree no more that wagon is not popular here but i'm a big fan of it coz I need that space when I bring my dogs to the vet or road trip. Guess i'm part of that small market hehehe.

I don't have the chance to try the heated feature yet, didn't need it before.

i just came back from ipoh, penang, and sungai petani..almost 1000Km road trip.

4 ppl inside the car kinda heave + all lugggage. pickup kinda slow coz i didn not press on accelerator hard. for my 1000km trip i've used up about RM165 of petrol...16.5 cents per KM ...not bad huh? coz this includes traffic jam in ipoh, penang, and along NSE.

car's total weight is estimated to be > 1.6 tonnes including passengers.

how about u guys? anyone went for long road trip ?

Dunno...I think either they chap lap or moved else where. I don't recommend changing the catalytic converter unless you really wanna change it to follow trend. The fuel consumption will technically go up due to the oxygen sensor giving some different reading to the EC, but for my case, it was ok. My FC is still pretty consistent at RM50/300km.

my car still new, less 7 months only..so still way long before i need to remove it.

going for my 16K service , do i need to change the ATF already? i read from soemwhere that we should change ATF for a new car after certain milage. normal after that is 20K km per change rite?

i'm worried there might be moisture in the brake lines.

I'm not sure, but you could always refer to your manual. What I recommend is to ask them to drain the gear oil completely, replace the filter (which cost around RM70), reapply gasket, and then finally refill with totally new gear oil. This way is cheaper and will ensure that no debris will still be present which flushing can't remove, plus, it is cheaper.

My car's mileage is 200,000 km now and I have done numerous gear filter change. The gear oil I'm using is petrol canada which conforms to techron VI specification. Those who wanted to have their gear oil changed, might wanna give this a try.

in the manual it didn specify when we need to change the ATF oil. it says "check, replace when needed" ...

they say the colour originally will be red, then it will turn brown, and then light brown ...but what i see is clear liquid, and it doesn have that "oily" feel. just like water. should i change the oil?

how much it cost to change? mine needs about 6L ATF, and i'm going for my lub service this saturday.

Your KIA is still under warranty rite? 6L? Mine only 4L. It cost me RM130++ for 4L for my car. Normally I change every 20k but can be more. If you feel the car's transmission not smooth, then it should be time to change.

car is still under warranty, but not sure about the ATF wether to change or not. if depends on feel, then its very subjective. maybe i should continue using it till 20K then only change. kinda expensive to change the ATF.

btw, add ATF cooler will help anything?

For me, I pumped 210kPa.

As for the tyres, I never did any rotations before because if I rotate them, I would need to change 4 tyres when the time comes. So what I did was to purchase new tyres for the front, then drive as normal. When the back tyres started to show signs of wear I go to the tyre shop again, changed it and place the now newly bought as front tyres while the front tyres to the back. Save a bit of $$$ biggrin.gif

if rotate the tyres, then the front side will have better traction rite?i think basically the lifespan is the same with changing 2 front tyres first, then another 2 for the back. i think changing all 4 will give a better ride, as harden tyres are not comfortable and dangerous. 4 tyres can use for 3-4 years i'm happy already.

i think i pumped 225 - 230kpa coz my tyres are 205/50/16...if pump 210kpa will look like tayar pancit.

btw, anyone know what type of spark plugs they're using as for stock? i was thinking of using bosch fusion plugs. but i dont dare to open up the engine parts yet. if not mistaken need to open up the engine cover to see everything.

1. Yes, killed at 17-Aug-04.

2. Yes, all use original Kia spare and at Kia authorised shop. First few years at Jalan Chan Sow Lin but after management change, I moved to Kia Salak South.

3. Yes, changed at 1-Mar-10.

Remember I am not saying the prices or schedule is the best. Your usage will differ from mine. In fact I feel I overpaid some of the items or changed too early. Anyway, this is just a reference. I am sure you guys can get cheaper price than me icon_rolleyes.gif

My car is trouble free (so far) and have served me well (love the fold-able 60/40 seat to carry extra large items). Too bad the second-hand value sucks (around 18K now). I intend to keep this car for a long time.

i was there on february to ask them about it, and none of them know anything about CAT ! worse still, ask them do 5 jobs they only do 3 job and ask me to come on another day for the balance 2 job. i was like WTH. so for all kia owners, do not go for kia service branch at chan sow lin! they know nothing about their cars and service is bad vmad.gif reason i wanna know more about the CAT from them is because i experience some very loud splashing sound from the bottom on the exhaust whenever i was driving on a heavy rain when there was a lot of water on the road. i did some research and found out that the CAT may be the cause but i wasn't entirely sure. so last month while servicing my car, i went to the kinrara branch and guess what, they also don't know anything about the CAT! i know spectra is a discontinued model but doesn't anymore knows about it?

I look at your price and some of the stuff you changed was cheaper than mine. I paid RM220 for a rear break pad last month man. excluding labour. sad.gif

Ever since management f#$k up 2 years ago, KIA MEGA Chan Sow Lin is no longer a good place to service your car. It is no longer value for money and will try to empty your pocket whenever they can. Call up Mr. Foo (Chief Mechanic of KIA MEGA during the glory days) and try to seek his advice. His no. is 017-3680979. Original parts at much much lower price than officially charged by KIA.

I can't remember how much I changed my timing belt, but it was very much lower than RM600. Have you guys check your mounting? If your mounting if failing, it will affect the drive shaft, which in my case, it did, but luckily not much problem. I only changed both bearings at the front wheels.

Yes, you're right. I was quoted RM 380 for timing belt before too (original Kia parts) by outside shops. Even cheaper if use OEM parts. whistling.gif

But it was original right? Most important is that you get original parts to maintain your car's efficiency.

alucard, how much did u change the bearings? coz before this i did consider buying 2nd hand volvo S60, but after hearing ppl changing the bearings for > Rm900 per pair i totally forget about the plan.

Bearings for RM900/pair?This is for Volvo or KIA Spectra? I first did the left passenger's side, and he charged me RM250++ (can't really remember, not sure inclusive of workmanship or not). After a month, I changed the next one. He will show you how original bearing looks like (looks like has a lot of gear for ABS purposes) and how the original looks like.

My parents used to have the old 240GL Volvo. While having it for more than a decade, it had actually posted very minimal problems until finally my mom decided to dispose of it due to the hefty road tax, for a mere RM5k.

KIA Spectra (Not Spectra 5) is still selling here. New cars are still available. So, we can safely assume that the parts would be abundant. Even as we speak, the parts have dropped in prices drastically over the years. You might wanna give a check on the connectors (something like a electrical connection pin) of your ignition coil. Spectra's version has a plastic cover over it and it will dry up and become brittle, hence breaking over time..Mine was changed to sephia's version which clips much better.

sometimes people just generalize all side mirror is the same. spectra5 has the side mirror defogger function right.
maybe that makes the cost high. but no doubt the price is really expensive. to be fair, we also cannot compare to other normal side mirror price.

correct me if i was wrong here.

Most probably the 50% was referring to their labour service. Many years ago, I was charged RM80 in KIA MEGA for labour charges and as high as RM150 in other service agents. 50% of the labour service is still pretty expensive if you ask me.

But what to do, since you have to go to the respective service centers or agents to have your car valid in warranty.

I don't think you can, or it used to be possible in KIA MEGA, but they will charge you higher for the service. Perhaps ask the center first. Why not go for authorised agents? There are faster and better though..

i just came back from service. the 30min service was totally FAKE , and this happens at JALAN TANDANG SC.

i went to SC at 9.20 , they drove my car into the workshop, and park there for 30 min , whole 30 min my car was just there, and no 1 attend to it. and it took the next 40 min to get the old lub oil to be drained. at 10am no workers were seen in SC so i asked the front desk, they say " tea time" . so 1 hour 10 min ..my black oil just been drained.

then they ding -dong here and there , and my car finally looks like all kau timmed..but i dont see them opening my air filter and change it.then i saw the worker like giving a sign saying the air filter is not changed OR no parts available.

at 11.30, i dont see my car around ,so i ask the front desk where is my car and they say sent for car wash. which i think might be value added service(but the car is not that clean la after washing..cincai wash 1)

so finally i got my car back, and when i ask about the air filter change, the front desk ppl say no need to change as it is still clean.. I was wondering how he know its clean when they did not open and see? i think they cincai do their job, if all KIA centre is like this then i REGRAT buying KIA already.

The car is good, but SERVICE is KANASAI

Don't regret dude. Like I said and people who have been working with KIA NAZA or their service centers told me that those in Service Centers mostly are newbies who just either graduated or under training. Experienced one or two, but you won't see them doing the jobs. They'll instruct those newcomers or mechanics to be to do the jobs. You'll ended up with parts changed where it can be fixed as they go by the book, malas to troubleshoot as it will take a very long time. After my bad experiences with service centers, I totally banned service centers. I only go to agents. Most of the agents themselves are well known or establish mechanics. The can get the job done faster and easier.

Not really sure as I don't own an 'under warranty' KIA. Mine is 8 years old. Is it written in their service manual on the location of service centers and agents? That was how I found KIA MEGA during its 'glory days'. Lemme as around..

Wow... Never thought that this thread is alive after laying dormant for quite some time... tongue.gif biggrin.gif
To all Kia-Sifus and Masters,

I owned a Kia Spectra (year 2004) and need to change all 4 shock absorbers (it's been almost 6 years already)...
Is there any place u guys could recommend? My current location is in Seremban and I have checked the price for both front and rear shock absorbers with a Kia Service Centre in Seremban 2.
Guess what? All four abs gonna cost me around RM1.1K!!! Holy crap!
Is there any other shops I can go to which offers a fairer and of course, lower price? Or is there any alternative abs I can get as equal replacement? Monroe maybe? Kayaba seems to be a good fit and cheaper compared to OEM but the reliability isn't that good... (My wife's "Potong Wira" is using Kayaba Shock Abs but after 2 years, they started giving problem).
Seeking for your advice and opinion.... TQ! smile.gif

What I did was this:

My Kia Spectra was 2002 version. All shock absorbers have not been changed yet. 2 years ago, I opted for some rubber inserts to 'prolong' the lifespan of the absorbers for at least a few years before my installments has been paid off which is next year April. And true to what it claims, the absorbers are still holding well. By next year, I'll first change my headlamp which will cost RM700 per pair and 4xabsorbers.

I changed both Headlamps 2 years ago... Cost me around RM680 for both (got it from a guy in this LYN forum, nickname airwind if not mistaken)... By the way, why do u need to change them? Because they turned yellowish and blurred? I am still keeping my old headlamps.
Nowadays, many shops are offering lamp-polishing to restore the headlights to its original condition (maybe 90%, not totally as what they claimed lah...). This will just cost u less than RM120... So, why wanna change? I am a bit regret coz changed them... blush.gif

** Am still looking for an equal replacement Shock Abs for my Spectra, if couldn't get, have to get OEM **

wah headlamp oso rm 700 already ? thats expensive. i think suspension can go for monroe, but have to ask them about the right model lo. last time i use moroe in my iswara, very stiff as they are gas charged. but since spectra is darn heavy, i think no problem.

btw spectra's headlamp is made of glass or plastic? mine is plastic..can see some fine lines at the plastic already.maybe due to the different in heat in and outside of the headlamp. I think there is some products in the market where we can use it to polish the headlamp.

Headlamps are plastic. You can actually DIY to make the lens clear again. If I got budget, then I'll change it, else, I might just get a can of very find polishing compound and polish the lens. Lamp polishers who charged RM120 uses similar method.

Monroe? Never thought there's a compatible shock absorbers for KIA Spectra. But I'll go for originals anyway since it lasted darn long for my car, more than 8 years for exact..

Yeap, spectra headlamp is made of plastic... Nowadays, most cars' headlamp is made of plastic (BMW, Merz, Toyota, Honda, 'Potong', etc.)
Monroe have a right model to fit into Spectra, but selling at RM250/pc!!!!
I found one seller in ebay selling Gab SR Series Comfort Sport Absorbers for Kia Spectra (rear = RM380/pair & front = RM380/pair). He mentioned that it is Original OEM Replacement Specially for Kia Spectra (dunno whether it is true or not lah coz I am not sure what brand is the OEM version of Abs for Spectra) tongue.gif

TQ! smile.gif

TekMing ka? I go there only for tyre change and he charged very reasonable one. I think I asked him before on aftermarket suspension for my Spectra and he said he don't carry one.

i see fine lines on my headlamp, is that a problem? will it crack and masuk water?
*
It won't crack... Usually, Spectra headlamp at the passenger side will become more yellowish than the other one (as what I have seen and surveyed so far) maybe due to manufacturing problem.
Just try using the polishing liquid available in the market and give it a try if your problem is not so severe... Else, u have to go to the workshop and ask them to scratch off a thin layer of your headlamp plastic and then do polishing to make it smooth and clear... icon_rolleyes.gif

By the way, I had actually drilled a few holes in the brake lights and now, it never banjir liao. If you guys experienced such situation (either banjir or moisture built up) just drill small holes and you're done. No need change brake lights...hehheh

If your headlamps have moisture built up, need not drill holes lah.... Just change or throw away the round yellow sponge (that resides at the back of the headlamps and your problem will be solved.

anyone know what is the spark plug used in the engine? i found that they are using distributorless ignition, and from certain website, they say normal copper and single platinium ones is not suitable. have to use double platinium.

but from the service price list, i saw they charge rm54 for spark plug..i doubt its double platinium. further more they normally charge retail price. i suspect its copper electrode type.

The mechanic which I visited have had some customers after changing the oil from service centers, they went to his shop to change to his PetroCanada coz it runs smoother and better. That way, it won't ruin your warranty, plus it is much much cheaper than full syn. oil.

Not that I know of. Been driving my trusty Spectra since 2002. Take care to change the filter and gear oil perhaps after each 20k km or so. And try to use Techron VI certified gear oil. You can almost feel a difference immediately after that.

Try going to the mechanic I went and get a gear oil change. While you're there, get the filter changed as well. That's the most cost efficient way to try first before engaging into changing the gearbox. The mechanic had many customers who were on the verge of selling their car (Carens and NAZA Ria particulary) because of this problem. But after changing the gear oil and filter, it went ok.

I'm staying around there as well. Just take Chan Sow Lin to go to Maluri then enroute to Pandan Jaya lo. Else, you can go to the exit to Sri Petaling and take the exit to Cheras/Pandan Indah. Then exit at Cempaka junction to Pandan Jaya. Very near.

I'm thinking of buying used Kia Spectra. Year 2001 hatchback. Any comment?
Mileage is around 100k, well i guess it fit with its low price. The tauke said that it's very easy to find spare parts for this kind of model
but dunno if my money will worth for it. Normally what probs will come out after that mileage? Any tips?

My KIA Spectra 2002 recently clocked 220k km. I asked the mechanic whether I need to overhaul the engine or not. He said as long as the engine didn't 'consume' lubricant, then there's no need. Till today touch wood, my car is still functioning very well.

When you buy KIA 2nd hand, take care to check the bearing of the wheels as well as the drive shaft. Make sure it is original and new. Original bearings are needed for its ABS system. Do also check the 4 mountings and make sure they are functioning well, ie, no cracks and make sure it is original. If possible, try to take it to the mechanic I mentioned in my earlier post and get him to verify the parts.

I have seen him replacing many 'low cost recon' parts at customers request (2nd hand car dealer) coz cheaper and he felt sorry for the buyers. So, do check thoroughly as the replacing cost could be very high.

Check the air conditioning system to make sure it cut off and turn back on intermittently.

For the price of around RM15-17k, this car is a steal. However, do check thoroughly before purchasing.

Cheers.

Oh. thanks alucard. thumbup.gif thumbup.gif thumbup.gif I did some rough inspection before.. already repainted. and nearly everthing exterior is replaced till looks like brand 95% new. No engine leak. The disc brake is already skimmed bout 2-3 times which i guess is pretty bad. interior fair cond but the tokey promise to polish everything up. suspension kong but tokey said will replace them + change belting +fix faulties+ 1 set new alloy rim. a great bargain.

Ask if i can test the engine's. tokey said cannot coz the batt is kong. if u want to try, need to complete agreement. huh? something fishy. die lor if car has accident record. anyways tokey said will send to puspakom for checking. aiyah. really hard leh. if have budget, better buy new one but of coz no budget.

Anyone have experience buying used spectra's? btw, is it really too bad having recon as replacement parts? rclxub.gif rclxub.gif rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

My Spectra is 2nd Hand. Bought it that time in 2004 with 20k mileage. Recon parts are not bad. In fact, my drive shaft is recon and it is still good. Why not search around further for some other Spectras before confirming with the tokei? There are a lot on sale. Try The Star Classifieds. By the way, how much did he offer you?

Sory. I'm around Sabah. Rarely to see spectra moving here. Love its sporty looks. Selling me for 23k. Expensive lor. But sadly, that's the cheapest. newer model (05 onward) will fetch around 35k. 23k for 1xxK mileage seems to expensive.

Oh. thanks alucard. thumbup.gif  thumbup.gif  thumbup.gif  I did some rough inspection before.. already repainted. and nearly everthing exterior is replaced till looks like brand 95% new.

Bought a spectra 04 before, mileage 40k+ @ RM23k. I was told by the SA at KIA service branch chan sow lin that for those who wanna buy a second hand spectra (or any other KIA car) you can drive the car there for them to check before buying from those second hand dealer. the only thing is you need to ask if the dealer allow you to do so or not.

Not sure about Spectra 5. It feels slow maybe because the car is stable? My Spectra's RPM is slighlty below 3k when running 110km/hr (to be confirmed).

It should still be advicing on what items need changing or sorts. If not, then gut feeling? But should still be under warranty rite?

hi....kinda good to see a thread about spectra models...

i bought a 2nd hand spectra recently...2004 model with about 60k mileage...so far so good, but i must agree that the kia service centres are actually charging quite a high price and the services they provide are not that justified for the money we pay....

i sent my car for a GDS test (sort of like a computer tuning test) to the SC in puchong...and i guess that was one the biggest mistakes as far as my car maintenance is concerned...

before entering the workshop, everything was fine....and they said the car would be ready in an hour...however i didnt expect so, coz i was a walk in customer..FYI the car was only taken into the service bay after 1.5 hours...damn...

another 2 hours later....the service technician came to me and said that the GDS test was done with satisfactory results...however, my back windscreen wiper started to run automatically by itself whenever the ignition was turned on and the car wouldnt start after that bloody test which they carried out...

now i doubt the technician's competency, as they do not seem to know what they are doing....imagine bringing in ur car to get it better but later u find out that it has only become worse!!

it appears to me that the car's electronic system went haywire after the test, causing the immobilizer to kick in and the back wiper to run even wen the fuse was removed....

after another one hour, one of the guys, which i think was called in from somewhere else, managed to reset the immobilizer but faild to rectify the wiper problem. i was so dejected!!

I WOULD STRONGLY ADVISE AGAINST VISITING THE CENTRES...and i am gonna contact mr foo for guidance..thanks guys...ur posts have helped me a lot...

Sad to hear about your situation. To what I know, centers go by the books, which means they troubleshoot based on books and their trainings, not really by experiences. Most of them are trainees who just graduated from somewhere. That's the reason KIA is not doing well in Malaysia whereas in the states, was different. I think Foo has the computer device. Do check with him.

kanna _28 , how is your car now? did mr foo help out? I was just wondering if he can do ECU tuning. Anyone does ECU tuning ?

KIA SC is always slow, they will drive your car in to the garage area but, only park there for the next 1 hour while you waiting like a dumb ass outside.

In overall, this is a pretty good car, hence the car of the year 2002. However, you have to be aware of the service centers around malaysia as they provide mediocre service. If you really are going for this car, do ask the permission from the seller to take the car for a third party opinion for checking on whether the parts are in good condition. Critical parts such as engine mounting, drive shaft, wheel bearing and suspension are often overlooked and even if changed, are recon or not original parts. Mr. Foo could be happy to verify the authenticity of the parts.

On the fuel consumption, it really depends on how you drive the car. I'm often driving below the 2.5k rpm and this really can make my car go 300km for around RM50+. If you are heavy on the pedal, then you'll of course get higher fuel consumption.

I have been driving this car since 2004 and my car is 2002 make and so far, it has served me well. Way before Proton and the others boast about ABS and EBD, this car already has it.

Cheers.

How much and what year is the car? Mr. Foo was previously the chief mechanic of the 'used' to be popular KIA MEGA service center, an agent actually, until a problem with the management made him left and start his own mechanic shop. His parts used are all original unless stated by the owner.

RM50/300km is the most economy driving. Most spectra owners could clock that kinda of mileage if they are heavy on the pedal. What was your budget actually for a car?

I've never encounter any major problems at all as my car was very well maintained. I also bought my car 2nd hand and that was in 2004 with a mileage of 20k. Now my mileage is >200k. So far, I've changed three times timing belt, once water pump, twice auto gear filter, once front wheels bearing, once 'recon' drive shaft and once engine mounting. That's about it. Once after April next year (when I finish my installment), I'll change both the front lamps (fogged) and all 4 suspensions. No overhauls done on the engine as it is still ok.

Most importantly is you check the car properly. Many second hand dealers ask mechanics to install 3rd party parts or super marked down used parts to maximize profit. I've seen some request such as this so be extra careful.

guys,

Just sent my car for a 30000km service. It was my 4th service & they said they would charge me about rm120 for labor if not for the promotion "lube express" something which cost me only rm12.

So my question is do you guys still send it to NazaKia or do you send it to other authorized service center? is there an authorized service center to begin with?

30k service. Meaning the car is still under warranty. Yes, there are some authorized service agents out there that can do the job better.

hi guys...

after numerous repetitions of Mr. Foo's name here, i made the effort to pay him a visit for my noisy drive shafts ( which was quoted RM 1 600 for replacing both sides - kia original parts)

After jacking up the car, Mr. Foo said he will solve the problem for me, by just changing the CV joint which cost only RM 320 for both sides!!

Want value for money and friendly service + good advice ?

Visit Mr. Foo at Pandan Jaya!!

I managed to get his card during my previous visit there to service my wife's ATOS. Will be visiting him for my 170k service soon.

Below are the front and back of the name card.

hmm... this Mr. Foo seems to be the right person to solve my engine noise problem. After changing my alternator belt, there is a squeeking noise (intermittently) whenever I accelerate my car (Spectra 1.6LS). I already brought it back to Kia Service Centre in S2 THREE times but those clowns were unable to solve the problem (just keep on saying no problem coz the noise is intermittent).

Great to hear that. Let's support him more. Did you try his engine oil and gear oil?

Nope. He used to work as the chief mechanic with KIA MEGA Chan Sow Lin but has since left it like a couple of years ago.

He doesn't have any addictive. But he will normally remove the gearbox cover, clean or replace the filter and then pump in new oil. This is way cheaper than flushing which does not really remove particles effectively, in fact, the flushing might introduce abrasive materials to other gear parts.

It is not engine oil that he's changing. It is actually the gear oil. Normal method by the 'books' is to first flush it out, then flush it with 'fresh' oil and finally fill up with new oil. This method is a 'shortcut' method where they hope to remove any debris caught in the fine gearbox filter and will flushed along with old and new. This method is actually more expensive as you are using more oil to 'flush' it out. Another alternative is to drain the gear oil and just top it up (cheaper) or the change the gear filter all together (approx RM80/filter). Flushing might like I say, introduce some fine debris into the already delicate gear parts which could instead of improving the gears, further damaging it.

For those who are having problem with irregular revving especially when on D or R (other than N or P), it is recommended to have him check it. I have the problem since 2002 and not a single service center or agent can manage to solve it. It was solved by Mr. Foo himself as the car he's currently driving incidentally is the same KIA Spectra model.

hi guys...

visited mr foo once again last week...to change my engine mountings...

cost of original Korean parts (4pcs of engine mounting) plus labour = RM 480

i also changed my brake pads....sanshin HI-Q... RM 90 for the front wheels...solved my problem of the brakes not holding properly...!!

im getting a knocking sound now when i turn my steering wheel (intermittent though)...this thing hapens only when the car is stationary and therefore the possiblilty ofa worn CV joint is eliminated...furthermore i just changed my CV joints...i cant relate the sound to thechanging of the mountings either as the sounds came even before i replaced the mountings...help anyone???

but im happy with the parts...can feel awhole lot of difference after the change....i wouldnt mind travelling from Malacca on Saturdays just for a reliable and affordable repair in Pandan Jaya..!!

I have been using Petro Canada engine oil so far and looks like petrl consumption has improve a little....planning of changing the transmission oil to dexon VI (peto canada) soon...

Good to hear that. His PetroCanada is good. I used it for both my Atos and Spectra and so far, it performed excellently. You won't go back to normal lubricant once you used Petro Canada.

HI,

The braking 'tuck' I think comes from the hind brake rite? I have the same problem as well. Apart from the annoying sound, it is perfectly normal. I has something to do with the rear brake cable.

My KIA is also 2002 version.

To me, it is perfectly normal. I have had it for like 2 years and till today there has been (touch wood) no problem at all. If you are really worried, maybe you should have your car checked by Mr. Foo (browse this topic for the namecard).

Pretty much is you do a good job maintaining it, it'll serve you well. I've never had any problems since purchasing it in 2004. Its original parts are reliable and can last long. Since your car is dated 2002, have you check your engine mounting? Worn mounting can affect the drive shaft which you won't want that to happen. The CV joints on the front 2 wheels needs to be checked as well.

looks like there is 2 thing i have to change ASAP..
1) timing belt
2) mounting..

sigh.. hope it not going to cost me a lot.. sad.gif

Both the items are rather expensive if you ask me. Again, try going to Mr. Foo there for the best bargain. I cant' remember how much I paid for my mountings, but I believe it was very much cheaper than KIA center. And his parts are all genuine.

Did you by any means removed the catalytic converter and replaced it with a direct bullet? I replaced mine with a straight bullet sometime like 5 years ago and when it rains very heavily or when traveling on very wet roads, occasionally I'll hear a sound.

I had this problem when i bought my 2004 Spectra. But it was fixed by a mechanic in Senawang (from Kia3R) by just bending down the exhaust holder so that water can disperse/ flow away from a sensor underneath the car.
I think this vibration system is used to shake off collected snows underneath the car in 4-seasons countries.
After he fixed it, no more vibration!!!

A word of caution on aircond. I once changed my aircond coil at some so-called air cond expert quoting me for an original part. The price was RM650 which was RM150 less than the original part from KIA. I saved RM150, but the air cond froze when driven for a long time. Got the thermostat changed for RM80 with no positive effect. Imagine the agony of turning the air cond on and off for the duration of trip from KL to Johor and anywhere else.

In the end, I couldn't take it and went to another so-called expert and explained my situation to him. He 'modified' my aircond by bypassing the internal thermostat with another external one which was hidden from view. Evaporator, compressor and valves all cost me RM1500 and till today, it has been serving me very well.

There is a small plug underneath the radiator and that could be causing the problem. I had a problem once as well where the water would be drained off in a matter of 2 days. Mr. Foo replaced the plug which cost (I think) not more than RM20 and viola it solved the problem.

The noise is it like a shrieking sound? It could have came from the air cond belt. A simple check on it should be ok. Other sounds might be from the pullet etc but the noise is different.

do you guy's battery water dry up quickly ? my spectra 5's battery gets evaporated quickly..about 4 months..have to add almost 1 litre battery water.

i think its because my air intake is sideways, facing to the battery top.

Where do the sounds originated from? The front or the back wheels?

I'm not sure as I'm currently using my first maintenance free battery. Could be some issue with the battery? Normally it won't evaporate very fast.

last time my fren driving the spectra says his battery dries up very fast coz the engine is very hot...

so when i get my spectra5, i can ceel that the engine is indeed very hot, but mine have a plastic shield around my battery and the air intake is next to the battery. both battery and air intake hose is shielded from the engine heat.

but the hose opening is near the middle of the battery...the 4 battery cells on the left which is infront of the hose tends to evaporate more, can see the battery plates when i open them. but the remaining 2 holes which is nearest to the engine is OK ...so i think its not the engine heat that causes the battery water to evaporate.

Hmm...I really can't comment on that as I'm not an expert on batteries. What do you think the mechanic will tell you?

novus can be easily identified foz they have skirting, sport rims, and leather seats (PU actually)

other than that i think its all same ... if they have better leather seats and nicer rims , who cares if its not novus?

just accesories differences that makes it called NOVUS , but nothing so great about it..mine is novus too, but i feel the so called leather seat not so comfy ..will change to real soft leather in future.

as for body kits and skirting, can fix them at normal accesories shop..,sport rims too.

Gonna visit Mr. Foo (finally! rclxms.gif ) on Tuesday, 17 Aug (won't wanna go on Monday, takut packed with customers). Wanna change my rear shock absorbers and ask him to check the engine's intermittent shrieking sound during acceleration (it started after i changed my alternator belt at Kia Service Centre, S'ban2. Even the so-called Chief Mechanic could not solve it doh.gif ).
Might even consider servicing my car there... i think it's gonna be a major service this time. Sure pokaiiiiii....... icon_question.gif

Yeah.. I bought my Spectra on July 2004 (with body kit minus the leather seat and CD changer). Novus came out later in the same year.

i agree. he's not like those typical mechanic that always ask you change this and change that. in fact he don't recommend me to change any part anything unless the part is really bad or damage.

hey guys.. i got my second hand spectra.. and there is this problem with the aircond.
after i changed my car battery(somehow the old one dried up and kong eventually), everytime i plug my keys to start the car, the aircond setting changed to taking outside air into the cabin. So everytime i forgets to change it, i can smell the smoke of the car infront of me... by default it should be closed circulation of air in the cabin right? any of u guys facing this problem?
sorry for bad grammar. idk how to express my problem. ==

That's is the default air con setting only for Kia Spectra but it can be changed. biggrin.gif

To make RECIRCULATING button as the default setting for your a/c :

a) Turn your ignition key to "On" position.

b) Turn the left dial to "0" to switch off the air-cond blower.

c) Turn the "center dial" or the blower position to "Defrost" or turn clockwise to the end.

d) Press the recirculating button for few times until the "Outside Air" button lits up and the recirculating air button blinks for few times.

e) After the blinking stops, quickly press the recirculating button again. Now, start your engine. The blinking is sort of indication that the air-cond is now is setting mode. If you want to set the air-cond mode to "outside air" again, repeat the steps above but instead of pressing the recirculating button after blinking, you press "outside air" button.

Have a nice try.

OILYGHOST, how much did the absorbers cost?

I just changed my rims to 17" and a kinda big profile, so now the rear tyres are grazing against the chassis whenever i go over bumps with full load in the car...i think the absorbers are kinda soft already as it bounces too much over humps on the highway...(i dunno if this is normal with other spectras)

my questions :

1. wat is the best solution to this problem?

2. is spectra suspension system inherently soft? will i get the same result if i change it to new absorbers?

3. I surveyed a few shops and they suggested adjustable absorbers. if this is viable, wat will be the best to go with?

4. I am having a soft knocking sound(occasional) coming from the right side when i turn the steering to the left and right while the car is stationary. What may be the problem?

anyway, i just changed my ATF filter and ATF oil...Dexon VI....transmission smooth giler...

Private sale, not from used car dealer. Everything looks ok and car has always been sent to Kia service centre in Ipoh.

I disagree. This car has very very minimal problem. I have the car since 2004 and never once it breaks down. Only once which was my problem (battery flat). My suspension is still stock suspension after all this time. Radiator? Gear? Still perfect. It all depends on where you take your car for service.

Hmm...many things to look into:

1. Timing belt (ori or pirated)
2. Water pump (ever changed during timing belt change?)
3. Aircond cut off
4. Mounting
5. Drive Shaft
6. CV Joint.
etc.

btw, i gonna go for a service this weekend and the mechainic says i can bring my own oil. what oil u guys recommend? at least i get so save some money on this ...i was thinking of shell helix ultra (from carrfour if they have discount) OR MOBIL 1.

i feel the syntium 3000 from petronas used by authorized service centre like not syok la.

Yes...Only 4 gears. Yesterday I went from KL to Teluk Intan and back with one quarter remaining. Distance traveled exactly 400km.

I recommend PetroCanada biggrin.gif rclxms.gif

i went to carrfour and bought Mobil 1 at rm 148 , fully synthetic oil. it has a rating of 5-50w, i read in other forums that this oil will lower down performance abit, but i also hear alot bmw drivers using this rating for their car.

all this while either use 10-40w or 15-40w, which i think the oil will look like water after a while. seems like the oil looses its property due to the hot temperature of the engine. so this time i decided to try out something with 50W.

Wow..can't believe KIA Spectra is still active.

I'm an owner and still driving a KIA Spectra 1.6AT 2002 model. Recently changed the radiator top, 4 x ori suspension and the so called (dunno what you call it) rod holding the suspension. I can tell you, the car's suspension felt like a new car, only that the sound dampening is no match with current car's dampening, that you will sometimes hear loud noises when going through large potholes or 'very' not even surfaces.

FC is still well at 300km for each RM50 - 55 (RM1.90/L RON95). Went to Fraser's hill last weekend and the car took it well on the cornerings.

Best of all, parts are still available (new not recon) and cheaper. Worse come to worst, if you feel your car needs overhauling, it'll only cost ya RM2000+ (I haven't do it) and it'll run like new.

My mileage is 228k.

6)Minor problem, hmmmmmmmmm. So far nothing for me.
7)For ne fuel consumption is good. My car i am using K & N Ori USA drop in air filter. And IK20 Iridium Spark Plugs. Michelin tires. Liqui Moly 10w-40 MoS2 Lubricants. So happy with the car. Its all depends how you maintain the car. Its a nice car for me.

Yes... it is the drive shaft problem. I just changed mine last two months. Cost about RM 380 each side. Sob... sob...
And.. it is not from Kia Service Center... should be more costly if from SC.

Hi all, i need an advise. I got a 2 years old Spectra5. The "check" light appeared lately. I went to Kia SC and the foreman reset it through computer system. And i was charged for rm65. According to the foreman the "check" light appeared is due to Shell RON95 petrol which is not suitable to use for Kia Spectra5. Is that true?

And lately my FC is increasing like hell. RM60 Petrol for appx. 250km only. Will it be the O2/Oxygen Sensor spoiled? But the "check" light does not appear. What will be the other possibility which caused this? Need your advise. Thanks in advance man...

I was always wondering why 2nd hand spectra is much cheaper than similar cars in same spec? atleast it shouldn't be cheaper than Kelisa!!

so guys what are the factors that caused this car to be so cheap?

apologies if this was already talked about.

i agree about the sun smile.gif , but considering the price you pay and the equipment you get it is a very good choice--- you pay the same price as a wira and fc is only 2 liters higher than my friends 1.5A wira , as for maintenance you have to find a good mechanic, maintenance is same as my old kembara, but it is very comfortable.....

in my opinion the first generation Korean cars did this , they made the impression that Korea cars are bad, and people still have the same idea , when i bought my spectra i was very skeptical but now i am happy that i did not buy a very old jap, i paid 13000 for a 2002 with 80K on the clock which is a bargain in my opinion , slightly more expensive than a kancil, but in city driving it drinks petrol but on highway you can get 10km/L. buy one if you find a clean one, otherwise dont go with cars above 120 K on the clock

Sorry to say this, but pls avoid buying spectra at all cost no matter hw cheap it is. Get a kelisa oso better.

Spectra is a terrible car and u will spend so much more repairing it. Or get a2nd hand jap car oso ok. Wont hv too many problems like the spectra

I'm not driving a spectra but a spectra5, my oppinion is that this car is nice to drive. On FC side, no complaints. new tech engine, and for that weight of the car ..i think its very fair. For me Korean cars is always safer to drive no matter new or old. I have another hyundai getz as well, 7 years car no problem at all. All bought because i want a safer than proton car with cheap price.NO complaints so far just a bit hiccup claiming warranty from NAZA last 2 years.

Why i say its a safer car to drive? its because i've saw them in accident with my own eyes, and 100% sure proton/cheap japs are no where have as strong body as them. The trade off is abit on FC since you're driving a tank around town.

hi all,

this is the 1st time i'm posting in this thread. I am proud owner of spectra 2004 model. I am the 1st owner for this Pearl Silver color car. Paid 70K with full spec including body kit. Total mileage is 312 xxx km. So far it has behaved well with good maintenance record. In average can get 50km for RM 10 petrol. Best long distance mileage is 585km for RM80.

Recently experiencing gearbox problem. I guess need to do full overhaul on the gearbox. Any recommended shops?

Will share more on minor problems in future posts. smile.gif smile.gif

So far so good. Last seven years I have been using 5w/30 or 40. Only last year I noticed the engine oil is reducing, so changed engine oil type to 10w/40. Currently when over 5k need to top up engine oil. Maintaining service of engine oil between 5K - 7K. As long there is no massive oil consumption, not going to open up the engine for overhaul

Major parts changed

1. starter motor - May 2011 (Original - RM 380)
2. Alternator - Sept 2011 (Original mando- RM 580)
3. Radiator complete set - Mar 2012 ( Korea - RM 250)

Wiring Problem

1. Radiator fan not working due to melted plastic socket below fuse box relay - wireman modified the connection direct to the relay. SOLVED (Aug 2010)
2. AC blower intermittent problem - same wiring issue caused by melted socket below fusebox - wireman modified the connection direct to the relay. SOLVED. (Sep 2010)

Other parts as drive shaft, drive shaft cover, brake pad, absorber are consider wear & tear parts. Not so much concern i guess.

For now I am having problem with gearbox. Early morning start have to wait long for the car to move in "D" position. If using "2" can move already. From my survey, need to overhaul gearbox. Cost is around 2.5k - 3k.
* No plan to fix a recon GB. My car GB have not been touch until today except for the fly wheel oil seal replacement. A believe a good workmanship on the GB would make the car moving without any GB issues for next 4-5 years.

Any one can recommend shops that repair Gearbox. Must be good workmanship. Thanks

awesome reply...but sorry i'm not sure where is good to repair the AT.

but anyway..does the symptoms appear to be like morning start - put to D - no response - unless you rev it up abit and it will jerk hard forward...?

Something like that. Once the car warm up, then the car will move without any issue when put to D. I don not usually rev up. I will try to warm up the car, then put to "2" and get moving. After the car is moving, approx 10m - 20m, I will change it to "D".

Once the car is warm enough, no issues at all. Gear changing is still smooth. Just that cannot do hardcore driving. If I do, then the car is like lost all power. I have to wait for a while until it gets to the normal state.

Hello fellow Kia Spectra users,

I have been using a 2003 used Kia Spectra since Aug 2012. so far, it has been a quiet and comfortable ride except for relatively high FC. But since I bought its at such highly depreciated selling price, I believe it more than compensate for the high FC.

However, I am facing a problem with the climate control system. It works fine but when driving long distance, after an hour or two, the system will sometimes stop blowing cool air and the wind emerging from the system will also be reduced. It can be resolved if I turned off the AC without turning off the blower fan for 10 to 20 minutes. After that, the air-conditioning will begin to function normally again.

I have sent the car to the air-cond specialists and they couldn;t figure out the cause of this problem. Since it only happen during long-distance driving for a certain period of time, it is difficult to reproduce the problem in the shop for closer inspection. The specialists has taken apart air-cond system and found most of the parts as rather new and in good working condition and it is obvious the previous users have taken good care of the car. We are not stumped in figuring out the cause and resolving the issue.

However, after reading through the car manual, I have learnt that the air-conditioning has a feature that will automatically turn off the A/C compressor if ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE reaches overheating level. I was wondering if this is the cause and whether it is common with newer cars using ECU to directly control the climate. It could be one possible cause except for the fact that my coolant temperature never rises and shows any sign of overheating during my long-distance driving, which is my the problem will arise.

Any fellow owners of KIA SPECTRA can to comment and share their experiences ?

Hi guys,

1) When & Where you bought it: PENANG

2) Price (since Spectra went thru some price changed) 16500

2) Colour of Your Spectra: Metallic Black

3) Any Major Problem So Far: I have some multiple issues.

A. ABS light will turn ON for 30min then Off again then it will not turn on unless i turn off the engine. One time I also experience the ABS and the hand break light up! while driving i double check hand break is not engage then my headlight turns off also! After few seconds the ABS and hand break light went off then my headlight went back.

B. The "D" drive will do the same thing ON sometimes and OFF sometimes in the dashboard. All the lights for the gearbox like Park-Reverse-2-1 no issue. I had replaced the sensor where the mechanical thingy is connected when you move the Transmission. It worked for 3 months and now I have it again.

C. When I reverse the sensor doesn't work IF my car aircon is ON and radio. It's like it's lacking of power from the alternator but when a mechanic check he said no problem with the alternator since it's charging.

FYI: battery has been replaced already with a new one.

4) Picture of Your Spectra: Next time I send.

I hope I'm not the only one having this kind of issue. When I bring it to a shop they don't diagnose very good. They just advice replace this replace that.... shakehead.gif shocking.gif icon_question.gif

I want to make sure that the part need to replace it the correct part. Any inputs?

A. do u have any problem when braking? hows the brake fluid level? try changing the brake fluid and do the flushing see whether it can solve your problem. try also doing diagnostic check..

B. D light is not illuminated might also be caused by a burning bulb..since most of the time the gear lever is at D position while driving..so the D bulb will burn 1st compared to other bulbs..try changing the D bulb..

C. No idea..

A. No issues on breaking. Brake fluid has been flushed few months ago.

B. But if the bulb was burnt already it should not light up anymore. That was the our suspect before we replace the sensor. OFF and ON. Before we replace the sensor before the D drive will not really light up.

C. I suspect its the alternator but I don't worry that much since it's only when backing.

3) The ABS is your ABS wheel sensor problem...
Replace each sensor cost about RM300-RM400 including labor charge...
When ABS and Hand break light lights up together, it means your EBD is not functioning as well...
better change the wheel sensor, else the ABS won't be functioning correctly..

I myself facing this kind of problem too..(i am not a spectra owner)
Just fixed the ABS sensor for peace of mind...
Since going from 0-100km/h is less important than 100-0km/h...

Thanks for the reply.

A. Yah i think that one too. It's so expensive but possible also some loose connection or cable issue *i wish*
Last time I run the diagnostic with mechanic its on the rear left issue. So it means only 1 problem for the ABS but since its ON and OFF I let it be for now.

B. I don't think that my car has a EBD since it's a bit old car 2004. The light for ABS and handbreak will just lit for a few seconds or less than a minute. I'm worried that something is grounded and it might catch or start a fire in my vehicle.

For those people who also experience loosing oil "10W-40" after running for 5k or 5-6 months and without any leaking. I have that same issue also. So I used 20W-50 oil. I'm still observing it. I will provide feedback after 3 more months.

I noticed some little audible issue since its a thicker oil the engine has some few adjustment from the start of using it. especially when you turn on the aircon and put more work for the engine. but the good thing about it is when you long drive since it's thicker oil its more better running in long distance when the engine is hot or wamred up already. thumbup.gif

oh...
because the user manual of my car state if ABS+handbrake light 2gether = EBD problem..
my car is a Kia Rio JB btw...
haha...

when the speed sensor having some problem...
better take care a bit while driving lo...
esp dun do emergency brake...
coz my case oso same wif u, ABS warning light sometimes on sometimes off...

but the speed sensor dun function normally...
so 1 time i wan to do brake, just normal braking, while the ABS warning is off and ABS is functioning..
the speed sensor i think send wrong info to the ECU (maybe send info that i do hard braking) and the ABS suddenly activates, causes me almost fail to brake..
as ABS wrongly regulating my tyre braking (ABS system thinks they are doing the right thing based on the wrong signal send to them by ABS wheel speed sensor)...

mine is FR wheel sensor problem.. wink.gif..
i at first oso feel don't like changing such small sensor for RM350++!!
but since that incident, i immediately go change the speed sensor...

Thanks for the input.

What year is your RIO?

How did they diagnose and isolate that the issue is the Front Right sensor is the issue? Did you try to change the cables to the sensor first?

What was the exact error did you got if you use the computer tool to diagnose it?

I don't feel any issue on breaking for now. sweat.gif

Hi Guys,

It was great to find this thread, love all the support from the contributors.

I am planning to get the Kia Novus:

Appreciate your comments on this, in terms of price and technical aspects.

This car is mainly to be used to commute to and back from work - I live in Seri Kembangan and working in Damansara. I can escape the jam as I am working 7am to 4pm.

Thanks guys.

KIA Spectra is good. Its spacious for big guys like me. Only issue is the part replacement for expensive than the usual since its not a local car.

The car that you saw, grill on the dash board is still okay, which is rare for a KIA Spectra. hehehe.

Usual problem with KIA Spectra is the transmission so better check for any leaks or jerkiness when it change shift specially from the first gear to 2nd on slow speed running 2000RPM onwards and engine eating oil.

The lights from the gear for the transmission in the dashboard is another issue. So check on that as well. Its always rosak. For that age of a car better check the alternator as well.

So bottom line is, you can buy the KIA Spectra as cheap as it goes but if your planning to hold it for more than a 2-3 years make sure you have a deep pocket so spend on it for maintenance / parts replacement.

================================

For my update for my KIA Spectra 04 AT

It's in the shop right now, got my alternator replace since its not charging the battery any more. Just got a Bnew OEM Part mechanic says its 90AMP. Not sure what brand and where its made but he assure me its not from China. I just ask him to get a photo of the part that he will replace before he put it since I'm here in the office right now.

Hopefully the weirdness of the electrical should be out after he replace it. Like ABS and Handbreak light will lit and goes out, back sensor not working if other electricals are open like aircon, headlights or car radio. icon_idea.gif

Will keep you posted guys. smile.gif

my Rio is year 2007...
the SC people just connect the diagnose device to the car ECU while the ABS warning light is thee and there it comes the error code...
they did check the wire for an hour as according to them initially error code is electrical problem..

From my POV, might as well stick to petrol bro beacuse in my experience, Spectra is the most fuel save car in it's class.

Better stick to normal petrol & try use Ron97.

I felt regret that i've sold my Spectra. The current owner is so satisfied with the car.

Bro, make sure it's the leather seat, full leather, not the half leather seat Spectra. The 2001,2002 model arebthe good one with full leather.

I just sold mine for rm5k only. Now regret becaise the condition is awesome plus new gear box somemore.

Try fill with ron97 or try shell v-power racing. A bit high but try fill it around 2,3 weeks and younwill know the difference.

Lot of my friends noticed the change after fill with ron97 or shell v-power advanced.

drive one to work daily..

if pump rm 20 @ rm 1.95 per liter can go 105km-110km for city only. Location melaka with lotsa traffic light.

highway rm 20 can go 140km..

not a bad car but also not a good car...for rm5k-7k atleast can bring people and stuff.

If old car like Spectra, just go to Zaf Auto at Sg Jelok, not far from Kajang prison. From the prison, go towards shop lot and before the small bridge, on your left, there's a few shop and you can see Zaf Auto there.

Fully recommended as i send my Spectra long time ago to service there. For sure can give you cheap price.

Hi, My spectra 2004 has problem, aircond stop working, first time 5 months ago it switch from cold to hot, technician check the relay box, nothing was broken and he said maybe connection problem.
it appear again from time to time, but last time when aircon stopped the signal start flicking by itself.
also the air flow controller don't remember, every time I start I need to adjust the flow again to be from inside not outside.
what should I test?
because every time I chick the relay box, but not always succeed, but it work again after few hours or day, this time it's second day not working

Saturday I changed the engine and gearbox oil and filters and spark plugs used Iridium, car became smooth and stable and more powerful but, gear changing became sudden sometimes especially at heavy load,
like if climbing road and I press the car the engine speed will increase above 3000Rpm then sudden drop when gear change with small shock.
another thing, when i was dropping down steep road car speed increase but engine speed still lowest this means the engine separated automatically, after I change the oil and filter the engine still working and without enough gas the car will slow down not speed up.
is this the normal condition or something wrong?

Try reset everything. Disconnect the battery for a few mins and press the horn for few times. Reconnect battery see if situation improve.

If unchanged, make sure the transmission fluid is at correct level. Btw, when you say gearbox, you do mean auto gear right?

I'll try
yes auto gearbox
today the gear became unstable I looked and found gear oil spreading over the engine and the oil measure steak out few centimeters
cleaned the oil and measure the level it's very low

Make sure you check the transmission fluid level while engine hot and running.

When the dipstick pop that probably means overfill. Normally they will flood from breather hole though.

This was the problem we checked before the gear box work, it seem the power converter suck large portion of gear oil while working
but something strange happen after oil change i used the car many time for long distances, but yesterday for short distance the oil pushed the meter steak and leaks, the only difference is that I pushed the engine harder up to 5000RPM.
it seem at such speed no enough oil the oil pressure will be powerful enough to push the steak

a weak ago a friend with spectra, engine start jerking and car can't move, he tooks it to NSS KIA at Shah Alam Gleanmary paid 80 RM for check they find slightly low piston pressure 80 instead of 120 and said it need full engine overhaul.
he tow it to a mechanic, and change spark plug and coils and did some configuration and it was ok again.
I recommend no one use NSS service as they are incompetent and will rip him off.
don't be fooled by style, equipment and their PR diplomacy.
I leaned also
platinum or Iridium 4 electrode spark plug is not good for NGV it'll not be destroyed like cooper, but became dirty with soot fast

Indeed.
I realized this 17 years ago when i first use KIA car.
After that i continued using KIA, Sportage. The cost of the service charge is ridicolous.

Just a few electronic gadgets and they charge you massive RM

No need to support them anymore. When nobody support them, they will decrease the price.

Hi guys. I have an old Kia Spectra 1.6 Auto 2005 model. Any idea where to check for the auto transmission fluid? I can't seem to find it. Thanks
