Well, maybe they can resolve this situation sooner than never.
I couldn't wait for Astro to answer those MCMC complaints when it's time.

These people fail to understand that if your service is good, and rates are fair and cheap why do people go for piracy? Millions are spent to curb piracy why cant they spend think abt giving reasonably priced service? Monopoly is the root of all evil, control and eat all for themselves!

Clampdown on Android TV box would boost lacklustre media sector, especially Astro

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 7): The government’s plan to ban Android TV boxes would be a positive catalyst to the lacklustre media sector, especially for Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd, given the continued effect of digital disruption, says Hong Leong IB Research (HLIB).

It was recently reported that the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), together with Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry, is considering banning the sale of Android set top boxes (STBs) in Malaysia, mirroring Singapore’s similar move last month.

Apart from that, both bodies are cracking down on the unauthorised websites that offer illegal streaming.

In a note today, HLIB explained that the sale of Android STBs have been growing rapidly in the last 2 to 3 years as a cheaper streaming alternative, which has hampered the development of Pay-TV in Malaysia.

“In Malaysia, Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd appears to be the most impacted player with the rapid sales of Android STBs, as evident by its declining premium subscribers in the past 3 years. However, we note that Astro has managed to slowdown the subscriber loss with NJOI,” it said.

Should the ban materialise, HLIB notes Astro would be a beneficiary as this could possibly put a halt (or at least slowdown) to its declining premium subscriber base and possibly lift its average revenue per user (ARPU) (currently at RM99.90).

However, it said despite the ban on Android STBs, Astro would still face competition from legal streaming platforms, such as Netflix.

Regardless, another good news for Astro would be that Telekom Malaysia Bhd ™ announced their latest Unifi package would not be bundled with Unifi TV subscription, due to changing consumer trends.

“We view the news as a positive for Astro, as this could assist Astro to expand their subscriber base.
Astro controlled 77% market share of Pay-TV market in Malaysia and the rest is controlled by TM through Unifi TV,” HLIB said.

This is BOLEHLAND mentality, if your memory still recall, how Astro Nusantara survived in Indonesia about a decade ago. Simply juara kampung !
*
Indonesians are smarter they kicked astro out when astro wanted to control EPL by not allowing telecast on Free Tvl rclxms.gif Like it or not, BN o PH, astro wl be the sole service provider on this bolehlah land which stands on,you help me I will help you policy!Telcos started slashing prices, look at asstro, they dont give a damn, nor does the minister, who last said he will meet astro soon and until today he has not! mad.gif

That is for those who really really really really really really interested in using Unifi TV's IPTV service via set-top-box.
Usually, commonly, people don't even interested to watch that.
*
My reason for hating unifi tv is I find the box NOT user friendly, old folks cannot get used to it,so here again astro is winner! bangwall.gif The box can be hacked and converted into a android box with Add ons of yr choice for a reasonable fee

If you tell me still "a lot of work" needed to be done, then how come telco can fast done it? That means telco side "don't have work" to do?
I didn't know Indonesians been kicked out by this service provider. ohmy.gif  So that means astro only available in Malaysia, the rest of countries don't have already?

Maybe minister is part of the shareholder with astro, that why they don't dare to slashing prices down.
Same thing too for TM, minister force to reduce the pricing because they might not join the shareholder with TM..

Anyway, the world is very reality one... Malaysia is welcome you as long as you have huge of finance..

some of astro's vernacular rojak channels are sold to singapore on MioTv and starhub,I understand they are not popular but are forced down via packages there! biggrin.gif

No its astro cost of operation and content they importing too expensive. that's why gobind previously so garang asking astro to reduce price or want to bring more competition now is very quiet about it. I guess he finally understood how the business works and that nobody wants to enter pay tv market. its too expensive to maintain
*
Partly agreed, but why only msia has problem? Most asian countries have more then one player, look at us since 1995 only one player hmm.gif Something wrong somewhere!! Weak goverment and cronyism, even Digital Mytv cannot take off!NJOI was allowed to overtake mytv!

Malaysia and Singapore have this problem as i am aware within Asean. gobind said there are 11 player with licensed. but not even one among the 10 took off..
*
Infact singapore has two players singtel and starhub and another M1 providing something different! Here we must blame it on corruption and exclusivity which killed new players on the spot. Asstro entered schools took over tv pendidikan and also stripped Tv 1 and Tv2,there was a time asstro was the sole sports provider! Assstro gave free decorders in sabah and sarawak,BN used them, you help me I help you was the situation! bangwall.gif Now everyone is so cautious and uncertain simply cos the new govt, is also too shaky with incompetent ministers cool2.gif

Huh?
Price Hike in India?
Walao... Don't play play... Astro would also hike coz content from India become more expensive 😈
*
They have implemented a new rule,u pay for packages direct from service provider,if u want HBO u have to buy the pack from them,so yr bill goes up according to yr selected channel provider! Last time just like astro, astro makes the packs and sells it,we pay for super pack and we get all channels but now its much costlier cos we will pay according to pack fixed by service provider hmm.gif
