when hulk met with the ancient one in the 2012 during the attack in New York (Avengers 1) and the ancient one told him "you're 5 years early".
shouldn't it be more 'years" to that given that the timeline between avengers one and their present time should be more than 5 years?

Rogers was going thru several period of timeline to lay/return those stones.

Agree there must be one of those period that the shield is taken & not missed

Herein lies the detective part to figure out.

I would say, one possibly is, when he went back to when the (endgame) Steve Rogers who impersonated the captain America of avengers where they fought in Stark towers (clearly that shield wasn’t taken back when when time traveled to 1970s to steal the tesaract in the US base)

There were 2 shields that on that bridge, endgame steve Rogers (going back the 2nd time) can pick shield that back & keep it with him when he went back to where he met Peggy Carter (this time for good)

Or he did take a shield from tony stark or Howard stark (which I too lazy to think of hand where a possible scenario atm)
