Speaking from an owner's perspective, I really like the X-Trail (2.0L version). It's not fast off the line, but as far as I can tell it's mostly because Nissan programmed it to be as smooth as possible. Cornering wise it is also pretty stable and fun. It struggles slightly going up hills but otherwise power is adequate. You're not supposed to speed in an SUV anyway given its high CG.
Edit: The X-trail's engine is much quieter than the CRV's. I'm not referring to the turbo whistle.
