im one of those still saving my money to buy good camera.

is it true that its better that i get a good mid-end used dslr rather than brand new low-end(entry level) dslr?

i have a few models in mind.

oly - e330 (rm1990 used) and e500(rm1500 used)
nikon - d40 (used rm1700), d40x or d50

budget is rm2000 only.

so far thats the best deal i could find at the moment.

ive read so many comparisons and there are several issues that im concerned with.

1. the second hand values of these cameras (nikon is better?)

2. the dust cleaning system (will it be an important factor?)

3. affordable lenses (if i ever feel inadequate with kit lenses which i doubt will happen anytime soon after i purchase the camera as im gona be very busy with my student life)

4. i love macro shots, playing with lightings and outdoor shots. also preferably low noise pics.

5. i want a light camera (initially wanted s3 is but everybody told me better get a dslr instead)

so...i need icon_question.gif icon_question.gif icon_question.gif icon_question.gif icon_question.gif icon_question.gif

pssst...can i throw in another subtopic as well?
fuji dslr? i heard its quite cheap.

I am an E-330 owner. I used to think that the Live View is a gimmick and bought it because of all the fanfare about its high ISO performance.

Turns out that the Live View is a really neat feature (unless you like to contort your body to take that odd angle shot; overhead shots in crowds) when you need it, and its high ISO performance comes with a hidden side-effect: horizontal banding image artifacts at high ISO (ISO800+) that crops up at times, but overall ISO400-1600 beats all previous E-series DSLRs.
Read about my experience here:
http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?t=224562

Everything else is probably comparable with most other entry-level DSLRs.

2. the dust cleaning system (will it be an important factor?)

--I have never had to clean my E-330's sensor for dust for over a year and I often go to beaches and parks (lots of flowers = pollen) to take shots and change lenses there.

3. affordable lenses (if i ever feel inadequate with kit lenses which i doubt will happen anytime soon after i purchase the camera as im gona be very busy with my student life)

--All SLR lenses are expensive. Olympus kit lenses are probably better off than similar Canon or Nikon offerings. Visit www.photozone.de for lens reviews.

4. i love macro shots, playing with lightings and outdoor shots. also preferably low noise pics.

--Canon is the king of high ISO. Olympus E-330 has a live view 10x magnification focus assist that some macro photographers find very useful for accurate focussing. Heck, I find that useful too even for long range still shots.

5. i want a light camera (initially wanted s3 is but everybody told me better get a dslr instead)

--E-330 is quite heavy. Light cameras would be the Canon 350D, 400D, Olympus E-410, E-500, Nikon D40.

Huh? Nikon D40 is a DSLR!
Major difference between it and the D50 is that the D50 has a in-body lens focussing motor and can autofocus with the older non-AF-S series lenses.

Investment or not I don't know as it may be Nikon's plan to phase-out in-body focussing motors for all of their DSLRs later, but that won't happen anytime soon and you'll have access to a wider selection of older model lenses. Many of the older ones you can get at good prices 2nd-hand which will make it more affordable for you to start out on photography.

poor supazta...don't confuse him lah. The Canon 1D MK3 cost RM16k+. It would have all the things as you would need for a professional photographer. Live View, Dust buster and weather seal.

Live view is only available on Olympus models E-330, E-410 and soon to launch E-510, Panasonic DMC-L1. Leica Digilux 3 and Canon 1D MK3. The $$$ lowest to the highest.

If Live View is what you want, then you may be better off with the new Olympus E-410 and the soon to launch E-510 as both of these would be pretty affordable and a good range of quality lens. It's new sensor and engine have pretty impressive noise management.

If you are looking into the resell market, then Nikon would be the way to go but remember you would be without a dust buster and Live View.

This dust buster or anti dust or whatever you call it, is important. Nikons have to send back to nikon for dust removing and if you change lens often, then it could be as regular as once a month. It's no fun and it will cost after the warranty period.

supazta,
try out e410, unique camera. i also fall into dillema like you considering d40 or 400d but after much thought and usage i need, i end up decide for e410. (i like the body struture)

i definite will get one just waiting for twin lens package.

This digit four is really confusing. Nikon = D40, Canon = 400D, Olympus = E410. Who else coming out with a digit four system?? Pentax, Sony?

im definitely looking into the resell market and the market for used lenses just in case i need to buy another lens...

i dont like hassles of changing lenses so i was thinking of getting myself a 55-200 vr ...before i actually found out about the price...hahahha...

now i think i will have to be satisfied with the kit lens that comes with d40 because reviews say its good enuf to get me started...
though i dont know how long it will last since im kinda big on macro shots as well...

ive (partially) decided to get a used set of d40 and use the extra money to get a spare battery or another lens.

my heart (and purse) says d40
my instinct says d40(or 350d?)
but my rationale says e410..though my purse strongly disagree.

hahah..

Added on May 15, 2007, 9:25 pmbtw...my lucky number is 4.
hah

hurmm..maybe in 2 years i will get this model..
wait until the price drops and the dual lens kit package comes out.
now only e500 has such offer and its at 2699 rite.

i dont want to wait anymore as waiting kept me missing the pictures that im supposed to shoot.

I really love image quality of Nikon but someone say that image quality of Olympus is the best.
Anyone can confirm that ?
