AC68U is released in 2013 & AC87U is released in 2014, how are they going to reach 10 years if it's only released 4 ~ 5 years ago? doh.gif

That is around the price people in most countries pay for the AC86U (after bundle discount)

@ASUSmy
Confirms the inflated price (also known as Malaysia ASUS tax) buying a local set at MSRP
*
But to me think is a good deal grab it while stock last especially AC86U is a good router...

Except AiMesh is full of bugs, unstable and to mention in simple terms no better than some vendor specific implementation of WDS (without the half bandwidth wireless backhaul penalty).  ASUS is trying to sell something that is still not quite there yet  biggrin.gif

The high end ASUS routers firmware still have connected client display issues, bugs fixed a few version back appearing again, etc.  Only feature that is good is AiProtection.  Otherwise the RM500 ASUS AC1300 router recommended by many on this forum is the better value.  That is where ASUS is good at.
*
Suprise there is so many bugs with ASUS router.. Well using ASUS 87U so far performance is OK to me compare to C1200 provided by TM.

Is that WS880 running the original firmware or converted to AC68U?

If its a modified AC68U then try not to update the firmware, be it ASUS or Merlin, as ASUS is getting sticky with its hardware verfication to prevent non ASUS devices from running its stuff.
*
Is it recommended to update to Asus Merlin firmware for ASUS router's?

Merlin has extra stuff like scripts, ad blocker but no mesh support.  A lot more stable than ASUS standard firmware.  If you do not need the extra features easier to stay with ASUS firmware for local support.
*
With this Merlin update will the warranty be void?

The "original" D-Link DIR615 from the early Unifi days is heaps better than the C1200.  Ok qualify a bit here.  With the wifi turned off and separate high end APs bridged to it.  DIR-615 suffers from weak wifi (given its 2009 design and technology then) and only 2.4GHz band only and this is where the APs come in.  The second reason is the compact case will heat up if the wifi chip is under heavy loads.  Otherwise it runs for months without a reboot.  C1200 is pale in comparison.

The amount of issues reported here on the C1200 and endless reboots points to issues around this router.

On the AC87U be aware that it is the only ASUS router with a separate firmware for the 5GHz radio.  Think its wifi radio chips are from different vendors.  ASUS is reported having no plans for firmware updates to say AiMesh other than security fixes for the AC87U.
*
That means Asus rt-ac87u is not recommended router for users that are looking for router? So far using it its OK not sure is the same par with Asus 68U or Asus 86U.

Most of the users nowadays using a dual band router even for their 10Mbps package. So it is not considered an overkill, it is considered as future proof your home network with better routers. Overkill simply means, you buy an overkill router with overkill performance, but only use the internet for surfing to facebook and youtube. Perhaps you only utilize 1% of the feature in the overkill mentioned router.

If you don't care about the budget, then you can opt for an asus dual band router.

Asus RT- AC1200G+ = RM389
Asus RT-AC1300UHP = RM 539
Asus RT-AC58U = RM 415 (Jayacom).

If you are on the budget, you can opt for TP-LINK Archer C4v4

If you don't wish to spend money on new router, perhaps, you can give tm a call to ask to change your router in the terms of either, extend your contract + pay RM53 of service charge, or buy the router from tm at full price. (not recommended as their c1200 router is have average performance).

Asus RT- AC1200G+ = RM389
Asus RT-AC1300UHP = RM 539
Asus RT-AC58U = RM 415 (Jayacom).

Which one is recommended to get?

Did you mention that you are using the AC87U?

If so losing AiProtection is a big deal.  Plus the above routers are in a different tier hardware specs snd features
*
Yes I'm using AC87U.. Is AC87U better than this 3 router's?
