Hi All,
Owned a 2013 Suprima since new. Liked it a lot especially on the power delivery (though feel sluggish sometimes, donno why), the handling, the safety aspect. Couldn't be bothered with other cars as I assumed this is the best Proton to date (I owned Iswara, Wira, Waja, Exora Bold, Persona 1, Persona 2 - I'm a fan of Proton actually)
....... until RECENTLY
My dilemma. Was driving a Mazda 3 (circa 2017) for the past 2 weeks on outstation trip, and upon returning to my daily ride, noticed that the Suprima loses severely on the NVH aspect especially on the road noise, engine booming sound, the hard ride, compared to the Mazda. I don't really mind on the poor interior compared to the Mazda, but I believe it also loses out to other similar range Jap cars in terms of NVH and refinement. Don't feel like changing the Suprima for the time being but it is getting unbearable.
Anyone can advise me on the NVH improvements? I want a quieter cabin without spending too much, maybe tops 3k. Intend to use the S for another couple of years, maybe more depending on how reliable it will be after more than 5 years in action.
Hope help is forthcoming. Thanks in advance!
I did not read all responses here but agree with one side, which is not to do anything to the car in terms of soundproofing but rather change to a different car instead. Of course one is free to do whatever he likes up to his preference. My own personal opinion and preference has always remained, that is to have the car in stock condition and not do any modifications as to me it is a waste of money and effort. Unless one is a tinkerer or have extra money to spend on these accessories such as soundproofing, nice sporty rims, better audio (HU and speakers or subwoofer etc.) then that's fine. It all depends on priorities and own preference. Owned a 2013 Suprima since new. My opinion is if you want a quiet car in terms of NVH, you would also want a quiet car in terms of a rattling-free sound. Older cars usually have more rattling sound than others due to wear and tear parts, and these noises will mar the quietness of the car in the event one has done the soundproofing to improve the NVH. I own the Proton Preve Turbo from 2013 as well and currently there is an intermittent sound from the suspension that comes up sometimes. Some of these rattling noises can be eliminated by replacing the parts but it may be difficult to pin-point where the noise comes from in some cases.
"Hard ride" of the Suprima (presuming the Preve also rides the same) is inherent as the suspension of the Proton Preve/Suprima is tuned to be firm. The firm or hard suspension is useful when one drives on uneven roads or bumps as the car will not "sink down" too much with the firm suspension. In other words, you may drive the car at higher speeds on these uneven or undulating road surfaces and the car will not feel like a rocking boat too much, unlike the softer and more "springy" suspension of almost all other cars which include Japanese and continental which will rock like a boat and with the bottom of the car hitting the higher part of the road surface or bumps at higher speeds. There are pros and cons to both suspension setups. It is more to a personal preference rather as to which is "better". I have no issues with either suspension setups of the Proton Preve Turbo and Ford Focus which I also currently own, and my previous Nissan Sylphy.
In summary, personally my advice to you is to save your RM3k for soundproofing or Autofoam. Others may have a different opinion and that's fine. To me it is a waste of money to spend on these stuff unless you have an interest or passion in this hobby or have some extra money to spend. It's best to spend it elsewhere, such as a new TV or computer etc.
