Hi All,

Owned a 2013 Suprima since new. Liked it a lot especially on the power delivery (though feel sluggish sometimes, donno why), the handling, the safety aspect. Couldn't be bothered with other cars as I assumed this is the best Proton to date (I owned Iswara, Wira, Waja, Exora Bold, Persona 1, Persona 2 - I'm a fan of Proton actually) blush.gif ....... until RECENTLY

My dilemma. Was driving a Mazda 3 (circa 2017) for the past 2 weeks on outstation trip, and upon returning to my daily ride, noticed that the Suprima loses severely on the NVH aspect especially on the road noise, engine booming sound, the hard ride, compared to the Mazda. I don't really mind on the poor interior compared to the Mazda, but I believe it also loses out to other similar range Jap cars in terms of NVH and refinement. Don't feel like changing the Suprima for the time being but it is getting unbearable.

Anyone can advise me on the NVH improvements? I want a quieter cabin without spending too much, maybe tops 3k. Intend to use the S for another couple of years, maybe more depending on how reliable it will be after more than 5 years in action.

Hope help is forthcoming. Thanks in advance!

Sound proofing

Areas to consider
- autofoam the bottom frame of your car ( kl auto / speed mod)
- 2 layer bitumen & foam proofing on floor, doors, boot & ceiling

There is nothing you can do on Suprima's NVH. It wasn't design that way. Save the money and buy a better car. Trust me.

Same dilemma with TS, driving gen2 satisfied with everything. But once drive other car and go back to gen2, the engine booming noise especially at highway is unbearable. If got cost effective reduction in engine noise I would like to try also.

Kl auto price is on high side. For cheaper alternative on autofoam, u may try speed mod. 1 car ~RM400.

For doors, price should range from rm700-RM1k, roof ~RM400 and boot too.

For floor, i never try b4. Should be more expensive since taking out all chairs & carpet.

You should change your tyres first. Change to those comfort oriented tyres like Goodyear Efficientgrip

Autofoam is a waste of money, you will NOT see any appreciable improvements for the complaints that you are having.

If road noise is bad, change your tyres

If engine is noisy, sound insulation material for the firewall can help, but it is a tough job as there are a lot of parts involved

Sound intrusion is a design and material issue, can't really be fixed by foaming your chassis. Rust would be your friend if you foam. and added weight. and lighter wallet.

I'm currently on RE003 @ 15k worn, it's my 3rd set using the same.. It does sound less harsh when new, but then again I believe all new tyres sounded silent, no? But I still don't believe by changing the tyres, it will be as 'silent' as the Mazda or other Jap cars for that matter, right?

RE003 is one of the noisiest tyres around. Get these tyres:
- Bridgestone GR100
- Goodyear Efficientgrip

These will cut tyre noise by 20-30%

Spending 3k on soundproofing will give you:
- 10-20% improvement from noise
- extra weight, extra fuel consumption
- rust. some areas are just not meant to be sealed with soundproofing material (hence, design, by design some areas are meant to block sound). Foaming your chassis is the biggest snake oil before the "donation" came along.

Lol bro.
You are using RE003 of course la noisy lel.
It's under UHP category and stick like a semi click tyre.
It's noisy and quiet hard and harsh.

Change to Primacy 3st and you will be shock how quiet you Suprima will be.

If out of budget, downgrade your 17 inch rim to 16 inch and use Continental CC6 instead.

Other things you might need to change for your 2013 Suprima is the absorber. Change all 4 include absorber mountings and bump stops. Around RM1k

Then change all 4 mounting on the engine and transmission. All 4. Not just 2. Most people change 2 only. Change all 4 and notice the different.

Then make sure use quality engine oil ( recommended fully synthetic ) and change every 7k km for smoothers and quieter engine.

Not to forget plss change your CVT oil earlier and do a clutch adaptation.

Soundproofing is the last thing you wanna do as its expensive and sometime the result is not up to your expectations after paying so much.

Cheaper alternative is you try going for door soundproof first. Search VibraMat on FB. Cheap. Try ask them to do 3 layer instead of 1.

agree with the rim size downgrade, helps a lot with road noise.

Soundproofing must be done by design.

There are 2 main factors which contributes to cabin noise;
1. Road noise (contributed by tires)
2. Wind noise (at high speeds)

If you want the most bang for your buck NVH treatment; I'd say just change the tires;
- Tires are the main contact point of your car to the road; and the design type and thread pattern of the tires contributes to the most of the noise travelling into your car.
- Change to a comfort/quiet oriented tires; thread patterns is designed to reduce road noise;
- Change to Taller tires; meaning the rim size will be smaller and the tire wall will be thicker;

I've got a few Michelin Primacy 3 LC for sale on cheap with 40% thread left; you could try them out on your Suprima S; the tires should fit.

Don’t waste your money on KL auto.

They will use words like “proven” and “definite”

After doing, they’ll start with words like, “not happy, we can tweak”. This will waste your time.
