once i saw this news, it totally makes me feel "awesome", but once i read the line "avoided showing any benchmark", i was doh.gif . wtf, again? last december was a demo with Task Manager, now is just a video conversion demo, without the numbers some more. it really makes every one ponder upon the reason why AMD decline to show the numbers.

who needs that 4x4 motherboard, anyone with AM2 mobo can support this upcoming processor, minus the "split power plane".

I wonder why they need to split the sockets, Having a Dual AM2 that support even the normal AMD CPU would be much more attractive.

to me, no benchmark figure = pointless

it's May, and still no figures for Barcelona?

Anyone knows if Barcelona presskit has been released?

looking forward to the single socket quad core processor.See how good can it perform compared to intel's.

different pin count is needed to support other features like dual processor, ecc, and maybe some other features.

that is why there are socket-F and socket-AM2

just like socket-939 with socket-940

and those who still refer socket-AM2 as socket-940 is lame

some ppl may question, why they don't make dual socket-AM2 or dual socket-939? they made it with sockat-A before....

that's because socket-A has memory controller on the motherboard northbridge, not built-in inside the cpu.

Agena FX is just part of the big plan, AMD K10. agena FX is quad core and if used pair, 8 cores. for normal user, there is Agena, a dualies which can't do support symmetric multiprocessing.

best part that interest me is the R600 stream processor capability. CPU working together with GPU for general purpose computing = high performance !!! but the heat from GPU is another problem though. look like ATi start to benefit AMD

Added on May 11, 2007, 8:37 ambtw, confirmed Agena using socket 940? not mentioned before.. might even use new socket, AM2+ or AM3

AM2+ is also socket 940. btw, a dually Agena can definitely do symmetric multiprocessing.

AM2+ is using the same socket AM2 with 940-pin socket design, but it's not Socket-940. From my understanding, AM2 and AM2+ is the same socket, but slightly enhanced interface.

Agena FX, Barcelona = socket-F
Agena and everything else (K10) = socket-AM2

I'm pretty sure the reason why the Opterons and FX series need more pins because they have more HT links enabled. The regular desktop chips only have 1 HT link enabled, because that's all they need.

Plus the different socket makes for a nice market segmentation, they can sell the socket F opterons for a much higher price because it supports ECC memory and maybe has some RAS features enabled which are not enabled in the regular desktop chips.

they should be based on am2+ 940 pins not socket F

socket F should be shanghai rather than barcelona which is the 45nm one if i'm not mistaken

i thought barcelona/agena is coming out late 2007?
hmmm...amd's waiting for quad core to dominate the market
i cant wait...
the nehalem is really into pounding AMD into oblivion la...
i dunno...with penryn

i just hate new technology coming out in short notice
it should be like last time
it took years to change from 939 to AM2
or 478 to 775
or geforce 7 to 8
or x1800 to x1900
now everything's just 3-6 months away
boring sial...

Added on May 12, 2007, 10:02 amand with DDR3 coming out next year, i dunnow what next
hahaha

they said by 2012, cpu's will include terra core i.e. more than 80cores in one cpu
hahaha
the americans...sheesh
