 Drive Shaft Koyak, Altis 2011 drive shaft boot

Hi guys..recently sent my car to toyota service center for normal services. But during collection of my car, the staff told me that my drive shaft got problem. "Sudah Koyak". I ask her for more details but unfortunately she seem like not really well versed in technical issue and at that time most of the staff already gone.
So the next working day i called the center and ask again regarding my issue and a guy told me is the right side drive shaft boot ( or something sound like tat ). The replacement for this is RM500++ excluding labour.
Anyone can enlighten me on this and whether the price quoted is fair ??? Any suggestion for workshop around Puchong area to replace this...

boot is the rubber cover. If drive shaft itself would cost more than that.

1. is your car under warranty?
2. changing outside might be a lot cheaper.

If you go to Centre, then, that is the price...I changed brake pad only, cost me rm500/pair...I suggest you to find the part outside and had any workshop to install it...that would be much cheaper...if you seek for quality and professional, then go to Centre...I say this from experience...

The drive shaft got rubber boot to cover the gear that connect between tire and with rotating drive shaft. The boot prevent dirt from entering the gear joint there where grease will gather dirt.

The rubber is simple only and replacement will not take long time. RM500 for the part is expensive but probably that is how expensive the authorized service center charged for it. You can go to any workshop for much cheaper price. I have no idea how much but will try to Google it

Yes. Can change the rubber only...But Centre usually don't replace only small2 parts...they replace the whole set...for example, power window arm...they will change the whole set (arm, switch, motor)...

That's why expensive because they sell the whole drive shaft. Outside workshop sell no more than half the Toyota price, I'm quite sure

IF you change the rubber only, I believe the rubber would cost around RM30 for good one.

Unfortunately NO more warranty..close to 7 years d..so i'm thinking of changing outside ...any recommendation of good and fair workshop ard puchong area.

For brake pad, my own experience changing outside is cheaper only by very minimal amount and the parts is not really genuine as claimed by them. A lot of black/red powder discharge and very fast wear out. So for the second time changing, i opt for service center.
Anyway for this drive shaft boot, guess i will search from outside as the price quoted is really too high.

Maybe this is the reason the price is so high. But they never properly explain to me the actual situation. All the staff is not so well versed.

Which service centre did you go? I always go Cheras Toyota Centre...Their techincians all know about technical stuff...very knowledgeable...they even recommend to go outside for cheaper price parts or small2 matter...I like to go to centre because they will check in and out of your car...at least you know your car's condition/status...not like normal workshop, they check only area where you tell them...

RM500 might very well be just the rubber boot, in my experience with Toyota, the entire drive shaft is not that cheap.

Me at Tmn Perindustrian Puchong. Yes they actually always do a throughout check and highlight the problem if there is. But this time after 2 stuff also can't relate the issue to me clearly. Or it's me that cannot get what they trying to say.
Anyway will look outside for more opinion / alternative..

For me NO, but my car is having problem with the lower arm for quite some time. But for this case i just ignore it until it become unbearable.
Having say this, just as last nite, i notice there's 'kok' sound on my front right suspension ( my drive shaft boot problem also at the same location )..donno its the sign of the boot issue or just the lower arm issue again... confused.gif confused.gif confused.gif

Drive Shaft if damaged got few symptoms:
1) outer CV joint drive shaft - while U turn got vibrate and noise
2) inner CV joint drive shaft - while starting moving dead stop sometimes can feel jerk and noise and vibration when travelling fast on highway say 90km/h and above
3) the shaft itself - if bended due to strong impact also vibration during high cruising at highway say 90km/h
4) CV joint boot - when the boot first started to torn you will start to experiencing hearing some grinding noise while driving but no jerk or vibrate when turning but as time goes by the those jerky and vibration symptom will get more noticeable cause water and sand will enter into the CV joints and the grease will leak out.

My foreman told me Best is to change to those silicone based CV joint. more durable and more resistant to chemical attack when come into contact with all sorts of lubricants.

Apart from item 1 & 4, i did not notice any of this sign. Maybe i'm not good in recognizing all this symptoms ..

outer CV joint drive shaft - refers to the right? i experience this before when making U turn.
inner CV joint drive shaft - refers to the left?
