QUOTE(porkchop @ May 11 2007, 09:45 PM) i have a question, how come dslr has higher chance to get fungus and pns / prosumer dont have to worry such problem at all?? Bring your gear out more in the sun and you won't have to worry about fungus. I keep my gears inside the car boot parked under the hot sun and no fungus will ever be able to breed or live. No need dry cabinet. I got one on the move. |

I wouldn't leave sensitive plastic stuff in hot places for long...
The reason being that everytime plastic expands and then later contracts (hot day, later cold night), it may not return to its original shape. Maybe just a few microns off but could possibly affect the lens elements' alignment. |

For me, it's the BBB virus at work:
My Olympus gear: E-330 + kit 14-45mm lens + lots of freebies -> S$2000 (when just launched early 2006) ZD 35mm macro f/3.5 -> S$340 Z OM 50mm f/1.8 -> S$67 ZD 14-54mm f/2.8-3.5 -> S$765 ZD 40-150mm f/3.5-4.5 -> S$220 (sold off at S$60 depreciation, after 1 year) ZD 50-200mm f/2.8-3.5 -> S$1610 Vivitar Series 1 manual focus 70-210mm f/2.8-4 ->S$136 FL-50 flash -> S$550 Sunpak 383 Super flash -> S$150 Spyder 2 Express -> S$150 No-name brand lousy slave flash -> S$60 Lowepro Slingshot 200AW bag -> S$85 Misc stuff like extra mem card and filters, caps, hoods, spare battery-> S$200 Total: S$6203 I've often wondered why couldn't I have just bought a S$600-1000 prosumer and be just as happy with it..? Added on May 13, 2007, 12:56 pm QUOTE(aichiban @ May 13 2007, 12:48 PM) yes, the condition inside the car boot is quite exteme. Add in one more thing: petrol exhaust fumes. Furthermore, cameras are tested to be kept at up to 65C which is not reachable inside the car boot. Coupled with being kept inside a Lowepro bag, I'm convinced there will be no problem. One more thing, I don't think smoke from the exhaust should leak into the car boot. If it does, you'd better get your car checked. |

The car boot is one heck of a place to keep your gears. I hope their lifespan isn't seriously affected!

OK... if you feel it's safe in your car boot... only you will know its condition. |

QUOTE(ac98 @ May 14 2007, 09:21 PM) If you have a DSLR inside your car boot I think it will be stolen before it even reaches its highest operation temperature, which is between 40-45 degrees Celcius Note that when stolen, it's still considered a 'hot' item (thief has to dispose of it ASAP for money). |

QUOTE(ac98 @ May 14 2007, 09:21 PM) If you have a DSLR inside your car boot I think it will be stolen before it even reaches its highest operation temperature, which is between 40-45 degrees Celcius Well, if you park your car in a public place, I don't recommend leaving anything expensive inside the car boot. Furthermore, the storage and operation temperature of any equipment is different. Storage temperature usually can be at least 20C higher than operation temperature. Therefore, no worries of putting any equipment like laptops or cameras in the boot.I put my gears in the car boot because I park inside the vicinity of my company. No worries of them being jacked. There is no problem with my gears after doing this for countless of times and they are already about 4 years old and working great! |
