Exactly!!!! I work in Tourism Industry. Spent some time in Indonesia before with their tourism board. Before that was promoting Philippines tourim board.
The way Malaysia promotes itself disgusts me-Indonesian government they develop their other cities too, good example is Palembang gonna have metro transit system.
You can take international flights to Bali and certain cities in Indonesia directly without passing through Jakarta.
Embassy-in Malaysia embassies all seem to be concentrated in KL only, except a few consulates.
Indonesia? I've met Indonesian professionals working in Bali, Surabaya who have travelled round the world but have never been to Jakarta. I ask them-how did you get your visa without going to Jakarta?
Their answer-I can get it done in Surabaya and Bali, foreign government open consulate there.
And their passport-promote other parts of their country too.
Philippines? Hooh, this is the best. The actively promote their other parts other than Manila. When I was working with them, the tourism board is divided into different region according to the provinces. Come promotion time, each sector must combine as one and each promote your province. When embassy promote also not allowed to promote Manila only.
Boracay and Palawan are good examples. Flights? Same as Indonesia-international flight not to Manila only. You can bypass Manila and fly straight to the cities.
Vietnam? Vietnam actively promotes its beaches too, which are not only the ones in Hanoi and definitely far away from Ho Chi Minh City.
And the capital is Hanoi but guess what-you can get so many things done in Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang as well. Not everything center around Hanoi only. Even some other cities other than the 3 are allowed to develop. The way they run their domestic flights shows much how they promote other destinations of their country.
And similar to Indonesia and Philippines. Lots of international flights to cities other than Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City as well.
Malaysia? Our passport seems like "KL Passport", not "Malaysia Passport". It doesn't even have a picture of Penang Bridge, KOMTAR, Kota A Famosa, The Cat statues and Menara Tun Mustapha, even Gunung Kinabalu also don't have? What is this man.
Even China puts their entire country map in their passport (drawing the wrath of the Philippines)
And when want to build metro transit systems in other cities? Everything KL only. Other cities like anak tiri terbiar. Even JB so advanced after KL also no proper train system yet.
Ask govt what they say? Sarahan state govt.
I'm the Klang Valley people that used to think like that till I started working and had to travel and network around Malaysia and ASEAN. Kuching is damn good. Nice and peaceful.
This is very true. All KL, Selangor only for everthing concentrated there like sardine in a can especially when you want to do gov related work. The way Malaysia promotes itself disgusts me-Indonesian government they develop their other cities too, good example is Palembang gonna have metro transit system.

Really stupid and wasting time and money for other people living outside those places.
