Job Title : Finance Executive
Age : 26
Salary: RM3000
Years spent in company : 6 months
Company :
Industry : O&G
Employment Level : Temp
Experience before joining (years) : 3 years (plus all the freelance job)
Highest paper qualification/ education background : ACCA partial

Average Working Hours Per Week (incl lunch hours): 9 hours perday.

I am looking for a new job as they offer me to extend the contract. On the other hand I would want a stable job with more securities. Can u guys help me to determine the range of my expected salary?
*
Try asking for 5k negotiable. Im a past engineer at one o&g contractor. You need to jump more in O&G in order to get good salary

wow jumping from 3k to 5k acceptable issit? O&G sector kinda fell down right now so do u think they will accept that kinda offer?

Im sorry but my previous job(before the temp) is only a small co, so this is kinda like a culture shock for me.
*
5k is kinda normal rate for O&G freshie especially on contractor site. Just try ur luck

Can you please explain what makes you think that you under paid? Because you are like first class honours super star with super good hard skills and soft skills?
3170 for a fresh graduate is not super ultra high, but indeed is a pretty good pay.  dry.gif
*
Yeah. That amount should be good enough considering fresh.
If want higher pay have to be engineer at oil n gas client companies. iinm petronas pay about 4.5k for fresh graduate, but the medical coverage was very limited vs last time.

Since this is an advantage for you, because you know the knowledge that no body knows. You may demand higher salary instead, otherwise jumpship. Your manager will panic and counter offer that  thumbup.gif
*
Better be careful on jumping n hoping manager want to counter offer. Cz some company, the HR have somehow big power over the manager.

Mean u out n need to replace with someone else.

1. Am I underpaid in this industry?
2. Is semiconductor even a good industry to work in to get high salary, compared to other industries like sales and software engineering?
3. I work in this company for 3 years + so far, should I hop more in order to increase my salary?
4. Anyone from semiconductor industry who has very good salary can share how to gain more? Is it by hopping more oftenly?
5. Is it partly because of my location is in Melaka and hence the salary is low? Who else is from Penang / KL semiconductor industry and do you mind to share your salary information here?

Thanks!

Hi guys, thanks for the input. So does semiconductor industry have good salary prospect in long term? Thanks!
*
To be honest, based on experience with semiconductor industry for 1st job there, Japanese Semiconductor, salary is quite low with not much increment. It was ok for first job or fresh graduate job salary.

However once to work there on long term, it is not much increment or salary is kinda low vs other industries.

Myself got opportunity to go oil n gas yard the huc company n need going offshore etc. The oil n gas salary quite ok plus with lots of allowances ie going offshore, outstation etc (90% times sure going to project out of office).

However the current situation at oil n gas industry is kinda risky. All are contract and not really safe.

Currently i am stuck with my work due to i am the focal person that only can manage this task. I feel i am underpaid for my age. I consider myself in the comfort zone because already handle it for many years. totally no life, sometime standby for support.

But have high commitment house, car, rent a place to stay in selangor not yet married. Should i jump or stay? Few years already thinking to jump but manage to stay until today..
*
Should make a personal kpi, ie to jump after every 2 years in a way that every jump get 30% increment.

That is what I do.

Food for thought, will employer's EPF contribution be a deciding factor for you too? when accepting a job, a new job, etc.

For example, if you work in a bank, you're likely gonna get 16% epf contribution by your bank as opposed to working in a small company where they just pay the statutory 12% epf contribution to your account.

Is this benefits important to you?
*
Important if you gonna stay long there. But if the other offers is too big, then I suggest take that offer.

Still survive in current oil n gas industry with that figure?
Most of my clients staff with high figure salary all lose job since 2015 onwards. Last time the Murphy paid almost 1.2k usd per day offshore here in kikeh field, sabah water.

Rest only on average salary.

Not sure what is the average pay for a Project Manager, jumped out from a EPCC contractor as a Project Engineer to assist a friend in setting up the operations of the Project Management Office for their regional office.

For a manager post, it better to have minimum of 10k. Yours is low b4 that allowance fix.

That is on my opinion.

My BF started his career in a foreign investment bank with a starting pay of RM4.5k but he never truly enjoyed it. He graduated as a mechanical engineer but ended up working in an investment bank (not his first choice as he doesn't know where to go after graduation) . The working hours are really long some days ( he slept in office couple of times). He had manage few IPO's at the same time.

After working there for 3 months, he quits his job and got himself into O&G. 2 years into the job, he now makes RM20-25K a month. Until, now he mentions that people who works in an investment bank really need strong mental & discipline. He told me that he will rather spend weeks in offshore than working in an investment bank.

That said, hats off to you & stay strong ! The hours can really long most days .

Which company ONG? Engineers post at rm20k per month? Exxon?

The heck fresh graduate 2 years in OnG already earning rm25k. Are u sure ur bf telling the truth. Or ur bf working outside of Msia. If ur bf posting outside Msia then rm25k do sounds logic.

Even field engineer sub to exxon got paid rm18k-19k max these day. No more rates like 2014 or before.

yes, these days even Exxon don't pay that much, but generally higher than most O&G company.
30k for an engineer is no more after the oil price drop in 2014.

Last time the aker solution regional manager even got paid almost rm65k per month after convert. now all gone, back to basic & lower salary.

Based on many forumers' tales,
Is it true that salary won't grow fast without jumping ship?
*
yes, generally in our market.
now it is normal people don't get a bonus these days. 1-month bonus is also quite difficult, as a company best giving 0.5 max.
increment at few hundred is also a standard practice with a reason of low economy factor by the management.

but by jumping ship, u can even ask relatively 30-40% jump of the salary, depending on how is the interview, skill they needed of u etc.

Before this, i'm working at site for 6 working days, changed job because married and got this job for 5 working days.
Still trying to find other jobs because i feel stagnant and boring because I dont have any job since there is no project on-going now.
