3rd update at 5.5yrs exp

Job Title : Actuarial assistant manager
Job Desciption : Insurance Pricing
Age : 28
Years spent in company : around 5.5 Years
Company : Local Insurance Company
Industry : Insurance
Employment Level : AM
Experience before joining : 0 Experience
Highest paper qualification/ education background : Associate Actuary (ASA). One last 5 hours exam to become fully qualified actuary
Salary : 12.5k
Bonus : 2-3months
Average working hours : 9am to 7-8pm on non peak. If peak then around 10pm.
After working will spend at least one hour to study at home, weekend allocate at least 8 hours on studying for exams since I joined the industry. So life is basically work and exam with little social life. To make it worse, I am not a smart person and failed the same exam a few times.

I really like jobs that their salaries are depending on certification or exams taken. Pass a few exam can get a lot of increment already.

On the other hand, software field not really much. Boss always says "LEL software? You can always Google"  bangwall.gif

Well deserved pay. Heard from my fellow actuary friends those exams are no easy stuff. They put lots of dedication, blood and sweat into it and some could barely pass it.

Truly a profession for the elites

The exam is excruciating indeed.

Imagine i am close to 30 already but still need to take exam. Many people quit taking exam once they have kids... it is very tiring.

Job Title : Actuarial Manager
Job Desciption : Insurance Pricing
Age : 29, 30soon.
Years spent in company : 7 Years
Company : Local Insurance Company
Industry : Insurance
Employment Level : M
Experience before joining : 0 Experience
Highest paper qualification/ education background : Done all actuarial exam, but is not formally a qualified actuary yet.
Salary : 14k
Bonus : 2~3months
Average working hours : since becoming AM last year, has been working till 8pm~10pm every day. during peak period, worked till 11pm~12am. and i insisted not wanting to work on weekend to accompany my family.
and my health has been deteriorating since last year, visiting hospital not less than 5 time in 2019.

supposingly should be 15k this year, (exam + promo + annual increment around 2.5k this year) but took a 1k paycut recently due to bad business and was complain by others due to bad personal performance.

considering to resign and have a short break due to stress and health issue. Just need a last straw to break the camel's back. Currently not the brightest moment in my career. Feeling self-doubt, lack of motivation and depressed.

how to get into actuary  ?
Im engineering background .

only started hearing insurance/bank actuary after working.
*
I think can start taking SOA preliminary exam first to get the actuarial knowledge.
But personally think no worth to switch after working in another industry, the opportunity cost too high and fresh grad supply is oversaturated...you could have spent the time doing other productive works instead of studying for exam which does not guarantee a job.

Do you know how much paper increment will be paid to a fresh grad who has completed 13 out of the 15 exams through exemptions?
*
IFOA? I have heard some top insurer willing to pay 5k to fresh graduates with this many exemption.

Yes, IFOA. Is 5k the total salary (including basic salary) or the increment for the papers passed?
*
Including total salary. Sound rugi because you didn't get the full increment, but I think your annual increment will be higher than others to make up for the gap.
