hi,
guys,
i am chinese female.
i am also intersted in applying to imu-pms august intake.
my question is,
how hard is it for internation student to match into aberdeen, nottingham and dalhousie?
i guess it will be quite competitive due to short duration and reduced cost. i really want to get into these three universities as i am not that young compared to other people when they start IMU.Another reason is that i want to reduce cost as i have spent a large sum of money studying in australia.
how many postions will they provided for these three universities?
will my chances be high if i am in the top 10%-20%?
thanks in advance

MD in North America is for graduate entry, right?
You have to have a degree first then a MD.
However,IMU allow students to have MD without a bachelors degree,it quite weird..
Anyone mind to explain a bit?

i guess there isĀ  involvement of government either US or Malaysia in this matter.something like developed country help developing country

according to imu admin, there was a US citizen working in malaysia who is influential and help to tie up imu and jefferson.
it is all about business, politics networking make imu with so many prestigious partner
*
I googled and found out that if you do not have a bachelor degree before MD,you may not be able to get license in some states, say,California require you have a bachelors before MD to get licensure.some other states require you to have at least 90 credit hours of undergraduate study before MD.
Correct me if I am wrong

not sure about that. However, i do know a few jefferson graduate manage to get a job after residency.

as far as residency is concerned, u are qualified and competent to train at any states with MD
*
Yeah.i found out that one is doing neurosurgery and one is doing surgery now.
I want to practice in US in future, but the md pathway seems a bit risky

that pathway is unique for malaysian,it provide lot of oppurtunities as opposed to risk

Is taking usmle make u think that it is risky?
*
Yeah..and I am thinking about dalhousie MD,graduates from dalhousie are considered as AMG.
I think it is risky because I don't have a bachelors degree,I don't know whether a MD without a bachelors will be disadvanteged or not recognised by many states in future.

But, dalhousie is more expensive than jefferson
there are people who do phd(3 years) during residency, or take a year off during medschool to do master

This might compensate the absence of degree
*
yeah.i have noticed that.
I'd better stick with UK

the quoted minimum is aggregate 80% in 4 subjects, 3 of which must be sciences and/or math) and the equivalent in atar is 85....

however, the cut off currently is way above that, the atar cut off is 95.....so you can roughly calculate what the mufy aggregate cut off will be....
*
I was thinking exactly the same thing.
So atar95 is 90 aggregate? But it may not be as simple as that.
I got 88 aggregate sad.gif and they said I am eligible to apply for pms route.
Any chance for me?

the actual cut off will vary depending on the overall qualify of the cohort of students applying.....as of this year's entry, they set atar95 as cutoff, and offer all who pass their interview (which is almost everybody!) places subjected to atar95 achieved.....on a first come first served basis.....

with the reality of the monash sunway programme hitting home, and the likelyhood of the same problem with the numed programme, the imu-pms programme is now extremely popular, and many excellent students who may have gone to monash or numed in the last few years, will now opt for imu-pms as 1st choice....and places are very limited, due to restrictions at the pms....
*
does it help if i am international applicant?
international applicants normally will not apply to monash sunway and numed programme anyway.and the places for international student is fixed.

that is not true.....there are quite a few non-msian students in monash...including singaporeans....they thought they can go work in oz, and hoped that smc will eventually recognise the monash sunway mbbs.....both mistaken.....

but going forward, there will be probably less, as students realise the truth....
*
haha, yeah, thats why i used the word "normally"
not that common though

There is an increasing trend of sg med students in UK universities and this is affecting the number of Malaysians offered places in these universities due to the "fixed" quota for international students.

I hope the number of places offered to pms students from imu will not be reduced in the near future as this will have serious repercussions on existing students.

Sg has also decided that incentives be given to their med students in uk by sponsoring their last 2 years of the med studies in return for a 4 years bond, which I think is fair.
*
Yeah,I heard that the Singapore students are really competitive.
Hope more universities will join IMU pms in future. thumbup.gif

Do well in your actual exam and get a fairly good aggregate will be able to secure yourself a place in IMU.............. =)

If you're doing AUSMAT/SAM, make sure you do well in your actual exam. It's either you have a TER 85 (or above) or 80% aggregate for 5 subjects. Remember, some people with 73 aggregate may translate into a TER of 85 too.
You'll not know until you're ranked with other candidates.

If you're doing MUFY, 4 top subjects+ 10% of 5th subject, add it up and if it's above 80%, you might be able to stand a chance.
*
As for MUFY,Do they take into account 10% of fifth subject?
Or just the aggregate of best four subjects?
Anybody knows?

actually, the pms do NOT create extra places for the imu students (and brunei unversity, which has a similar arrangement with some uk uni, as well as taylors college with st georges).....

they know that there will always be a drop out rate in any cohort, from either failures, or lost of interests....so by the time the cohort reaches the clinical years, there will always be a few places empty....and they allocate them to partnerships like imu.....
*
yep.i agree with you.it is not like they reduce the seats for their own students.
there will always be a few students leave after pre-clinical years for various reasons.
then they just fill IMU students into these empty seats.
it is a win-win situation in my opinion.

If the cut off is atar 95,does it mean I have no chance?
I had 88 aggregate in mufy,which equivalents to atar 93 I guess?
I am really nervous now as I really want to get into IMU.

If i am not mistaken, you will need to hit the cut-off score to have your application submitted, and sit for an interview. I was told that it is the "minimum requirement to apply".  All the best!! smile.gif
*
Hi,the mimimumrequirement in their website is really low, like bbc.
But the real cut off is much higher than that.
I think they still give out interview offers to those who meet bbc but under real cut off

I was told that the cut off for the mbbs local program is indeed bbc/bbb, so you can apply with bbc/bbb; while the cut off for the pms stream is aab/aaa.
*
I am applying to pms by the way.
They looked at my result and said I am eligible to apply, but I am not sure whether i will meet the cut off or not.
I am still waiting them to give me the interview date.

Not meaning to scare you, my niece's friend (they are JPA scholars) was deemed "not qualified" for pms by IMU, based on the interview which was conducted prior to A Level exam. He went on to scored straight As in A Levels, appealed to IMU to qualify him for pms but was turned down (the boy cheekily post his A Level results and the 2nd rejection letter from IMU for the pms program on his FB for all his friends to see.  smile.gif ).

Fortunately JPA allowed him to maintain his scholarship but he had to do his medical course at IMU for the full 5 years. And he excelled in the pre-clinical phase (probably to show to IMU that he's a truly doctor material  biggrin.gif ). He will continue the clinical phase at the Seremban Hospital soon.

Well, moral of the story is, you'd better do well in the interview. Getting straight As in ALevels does not guarantee a place in pms. Good luck!  wink.gif
*
Wow,straight As even get rejected? shocking.gif
I think they do care about interview performance.
Guess I have to prepare more. rclxub.gif
