Yup yup. I also remember names like Hedgehog Jones, Charlie "Iron" Barr and Fred Rimmy. But they played for a team that sounds similar to a team I'm not too fond off. smile.gif

Ohh ohh I remember that one as well.... darn can't remember their names. Yeah the guy with the stache is the honest, hard working defender while the other dude is the glam seeking striker. Haha, feel so old mate, better stop talking, making me depressed tongue.gif

I support Man Utd because they are the greatest team in the world.

We can win so many trophies without spending money on players...

Beckham Scholes Butt Giggs Neville cost nothing. Absolutely nothing  whistling.gif  whistling.gif

Our current financial success came from the global command of merchandise that these players, who cost nothing, made. Not from a certain oil tycoon or some rich syeikh  whistling.gif  whistling.gif

Right... so his statement that you spent nothing on players hold water yes? It doesn't matter where the money came from, fact is that money was spent. Reminds me of how people interpret Nostradamus' predictions to suit their themselves. hmm.gif

If you compare the amount of money spent, you will realise Man Utd spend so much lesser than Chelsea, Liverpool and all other premier league teams...
*
So you did spend money right? The argument here is that someone claimed you spent nothing so let's not sidetrack. It doesn't matter if you spent or not to win titles, all teams do, but for someone to claim that you spent nothing is a little over the top.

That being said, where is the proof that you've spent less than us over the past decade or so? I will realise this when you have some evidence to back up your claim. As Paul Tomkins mentions, many fans fail to take into consideration how much clubs recoup from sale of players. It's not just about outflow, it's about cash coming in as well.

You've spent less than all other Premier League teams? Yes I can see how Hull, Wigan, West Brom, Everton, Stoke, Bolton, West Ham, Blackburn, Fulham, Middlesborough, and Newcastle all broke their piggy banks last summer (http://soccerlens.com/premier-league-transfers-summer-2008/7653/). In our case, we may have splurged $20 million on Robbie Keane but we sold Crouch for $11 million, Riise for $4 million and Scott Carson for $3 million. Do the math.

Like I said there is nothing wrong in spending money if you have it, what more if you've earned it and it wasn't inherited so what is the big deal? I'm merely suggesting that to claim you didn't spend any money is ludicrous, not that spending money is wrong.

I just realised one thing; that I started supporting Liverpool not because I watched them play. I was a fan even before that because of the stories that were told to me and more importantly, the manner in which they were told. If you've watched interviews of players, past and present, or fans when asked about the club, you'll see a spark light up in their eye and they speak with a great deal of passion. Such was the case when we met the legendary Phil Neal in the flesh. My friend had the same passion and fire in his eyes when talking about the club to me. I was sold even before watching my first game. I didn't know if we played good football at the time, only that we were a great team with deep lying traditions. I've not changed my stance because my loyalty has never wavered regardless of how poor we are on the pitch. I never once thought of jumping ship even though we've not won the league for 20 years. The 90's was particularly tough with the mancs winning everything but fortunately for me, it wasn't all about winning for me. It was about feelng a sense of belonging.

Well in a nutshell that's why I am and always will be a Liverpool fan. Success comes in spurts and is therefore temporary, while history and folklore echo in the halls of eternity.

I support Arsenal because of Wenger and King Henry. They didn't win as many trophy as Man Utd but it doesn't stop me from loving the Gunners.

Thierry Henry will go down as a legend no doubt but the most clinical Arsenal player I've had the pleasure of watching was Ian Wright. He was lethal and formed a formidable partnership with Alan Smith (was constantly annoyed at how our local commentator kept saying "Schmid" as though he was German or something). His form for England though left much to be desired. A little bit of a Jekyll and Hyde thing.

You didn't mention players like Beckham, Neville, and Giggs are all free... they were produced by the great academy of Man Utd... In fact, Man utd have the greatest academy in english football... and thats the reason why i support Man U in the first place..

Football clubs nowadays just don't produce young players anymore, all they know is buying players from other clubs...

What a biased Arsenal fan...
Posts like these sometimes make me wonder if people think before saying something. So he didn't mention that the class of 92 cost you nothing but what does that have to do with the fact the you spent on the players he mentioned? Also, as solstice posted, 'nett" spending means that they have already taken into account the profit you made back from the sales of players like Nicky Butt, David Beckham, Phil Neville, Luke Chadwick, Jonathan Greening, Ronnie Wallwork, and the other homegrown lads.

While we're on the topic, I think Crewe's youth academy deserves a mention as well.

Unlike your Royal Highness who has the benefit for ASTRO a lot of us from the 80's did not get to watch live games with the exception of the FA Cup. How then can we support a team we've never watched? York? Preston? Darlington? Blackpool? Forget them, we didn't even get to see much of QPR, Nottingham Forest, Oldham and Notts County when they were in the top flight.

Glory hunters support teams that keep winning. What the heck did Liverpool win in the 90's? We're still here, no? I could care less if a person supports a team because they are champions, just so long as they keep doing so when they aren't.

I think Mata plays more upfront now with Silva on the left unless I'm mistaken.

Speaking of Newcastle fans, I was once chastised for referring to them as the "Zebras". What the hell? That's what their own fans refer to them as what. On another note, I hope they stay up for they have a great set of fans despite not winning anything since the beginning of time.

A lot has been said about this song with rivals commenting that it's a song for losers because winners walk alone, etc. The thing is mate, the song has nothing to do with winning because it's easy to come together when you are winning silverware. The song is about coming together even if you aren't. Now which means more? You tell me.
