I went to Penang with my wife last week.Since CKT is my favourite hawker food,i am determined to try as many version as possible(why not,this is CKT birthplace)

I did some research as usual and came out with the list below:- (taste is subjective ya)

1)Lorong Selamat (Red hat auntie)
-RM11 per plate
-Seriously hot(high heat),full of wok hei.I have to wait a few minutes only can eat (normally i just eat when served,no problem).Ingredients are fresh,taste is good
-Coffeshop auntie showed black face when i ordered 2 glass of plain water (RM1.40)
-Auntie handles one wok,another young guy handles one wok.i saw that guy smoking while frying the kuey teow.
-Wont return

2)Ah Leng senior (Ayer Itam)
-RM14 per plate (add mantis prawn)
-The spiciest CKT of all that i tried in Penang
-Ingredients are fresh,taste is good
-Maybe will return
-There is a loh bak stall in the same premise.Taste not bad la,price very reasonable.RM7 for my portion is a steal.In KL easily RM10 above

3)Kedai Kopi Bee Hong(opposite First Avenue mall)
-RM6 if not mistaken,with duck egg
-The thinnest kuey teow (for frying,not for soup)i’ve tried so far.So can absorb flavour and wok hei very well
-Actually my wife wanna go shopping and eat tang yuen at this coffeeshop.So can say i just stumbled into a gem,haha
-Surely will return.Why not?reasonable price,no need queue like crazy.

4)Hua Soon (Simpang,Taiping)
-Try this on the way back to KL
-RM4.40 with duck egg,served on large green leaf
-The old uncle frying with high heat from charcoal with an antique fan.Can see fireworks like frying Hokkien Mee.
-Not salty enough for me.Add a few drops of soy sauce then is ok.
-Con9lan7firm will return.RM4.40,apa lagi cina mau

Will go to Penang again this June/July,specifically to Balik Pulau for durian.So will take this opportunity to try other famous stalls such as :-

1)Sister’s
2)Siam road
3)Tiger
4)KTG

Penang lang have anything to add?all suggestions are welcome.I can use as reference for my next trip

Those more than RM10 normally comes with a few big prawns

My favorite is siam road. Sometimes weekend not open and be prepared to queue.

I like tiger also, but my family not so.

Lorong selamat got another stall, a bit further up from red hat auntie. I go there sometimes. Price a bit cheaper than red hat auntie.

If you find yourself in Raja Uda, mainland, theres a Sunrise kopitiam. Good ckt there. only at night, after 8pm . Highly recommended .

To be fair,only those famous stalls are expensive.Other hawkers price in Penang are very reasonable.

About sedap or not.....its very subjective.My wife dont like CKT,give her what CKT also tak sedap.

1)Sister’s - don't waste time, frying 5-10 plates at a time, not dry enough and uses gas fire
2)Siam road - Good but be prepared to wait long but they will not forget you, uses charcoal fire and frys max 2-3 plates at a time.

Additional suggestion : Bee Hooi Cafe, Pulau Tikus - 7pm onwards..my local
favourite since used to live around that place.

Those big prawns without tail shells are frozen type. Tough and tasteless.

I never bring my KL friends to those touristy places because I myself tried them and they suck. I don't blindly say that because I've personally tried them and they are not only overrated, but also horrible in taste and expensive.

Agree on the one on Perak road, but please don't go promote it, we locals don't want it to become another touristy place. They old couple is doing just well without those tourists.

As more and more old timers retire, Penang CKT quality will suffer. Next gen don't want to slave over hot wok to earn income. They prefer aircon offices.

When Sisters retired, the frying job was taken over by their family members and since then the taste already different but price also higher.

My usual CKT at Bayan Baru market also gone. Whole family retired. Same goes for Teluk Bayan and Supertanker. All gone.

dei, i go penang quite often since i was a kid, and i have few relatives there..CKT taste at most of the stalls are OK and nothing to shout about..you can get the same taste in KL if you know where to find. unless the taste is so bad in a particular stall which separate it from the rest...

3)Tiger? Is it Ah Leng's previous coffee shop in dato kramat? if it's that, no need bother that lah, the Ah Leng junior located opposite the old coffee shop taste better.

- chee cheong funn @ Genting Cafe in Island Glades
- koay teow th'ng @ Kafe Sri Nibong in Sri Nibong (ask for some fried pork lard)
- ckt @ Kafe Sri Nibong is also worth a try IMHO, they taste better than linux aunty @ lorong selamat
- char koay kak @ Seow Fong Lye Coffeeshop in Lorong Macalister (morning 7am - 12-1pm only)
- duck rice @ Air Itam Market (about 10PM till past midnight, do order for extra pork)

Go Batuj Lanchang Hawker CKT. The one at rear beside Laksa. Open at 1230 noon sharp only. Good and cheap

You can try the shop opposite Penang Chinese Girl School (Restoran Taman Emas). They are famous for their laksa (which is really good) but their duck egg CKT is surprisingly very good as well!

actually your tasting is fail . To know the real taste of char koay teow, eat one original without chili first. than second one is chili. u compare like that, not accurate. one chili hot kaw kaw, some not so hot. must try only original , kicap only then u can taste the blend of seafood especially prawn n egg . wok hei as well
