for 2k, there's the nikon d40 and the pentax k100d. if you are going to stick with the kit lens for a while, the pentax one is way ahead... metal mount, better construction and faster AF. then also, the pentax is not in anyway crippled like the d40.

i think the OP should do his own research, read up and actually go and handle the cameras. people with canon will ask him to buy canon, people with nikon will ask him to buy nikon, pentax people will ask him to buy pentax and so on... end up being more confused.
why not sit down and list out what the needs are and what you need to get and do some proper planning? it's a gradual thing... more experience and knowledge leads to more lens and accessory buying. no point being in a hurry to spend money. you are just benefiting the sellers.
