At the moment, these laptops arn't even available on the market, so in terms of performance, there's few who have tested and benchmarked them..... but I still think they should at least add in a 8600GS for that price.......
From the looks of it at the Roadshow in 1Utama the other day, it looks quite nice and feels about right...... but the "model" there showing off the new laptop says it's "only a test model, so it hangs quite alot"....
I kinda like the outside design pattern, but a little "ah beng" for my taste.....
Hmm... Outside old gen Acers having horrendous build quality problems (I experienced one myself, my bro's TravelMate had a cracked lid that led to it cracking completely open), infamous heat management problems and equally infamous customer service issues (which every brand has, to be fair), I have to say that the new Gemstones DO have attractive specs... And doesn't look too badly built...

And even if it's a test model, hanging a lot IS NOT a good sign... No review on the net has mention how the Gemstone fares in terms of heat management, and it's got a 8600GT on board too... So I hope it won't become a repeat of the overheated tragedies that some Radeon x1600 equipped Aspires turned out to be...

But we won't know until somebody here gets one, right?

When do u will think u need it? Is that a fixed budget or it can grow over months? StarCraft 2 will be coming soon, and it says will be like somewhere in the end of this year or most prolly next year. If u need it quick for schooling for the next semester or sumthing like dat, then get what john jay's suggest or try to research on Dell's like if they are having student discounts, coupons, go-to school deals etc. Last month the 23-years anniversary cut down 23% some of the products. Never afraid to call em if they are toll-free, ask for whatever discount they can give and im sure they will answer you. U can go details like mentioning ur budget and see what the best they can offer. They prolly couldnt negotiate like 3rd-person does, but they can throw-in student discount or coupon or wuteva. Just ask em.
I know Dell has student discounts for the US, but I'm not aware of anything like that here... All we have are their special deals (and some coupons)... I did ask for a student discount, and all they said they had was a discount for their printers...

And I'm waiting impatiently for Blizzard to deliver with the "it can run fine on older hardware" SC2 rumour...

Vaio C series how much now?
RM4988 for the VGN-C25G (the one with the GF7400)...
If you want something cheaper for even better specs, get a Dell XPS M1210... Dell's clearing them out cheap at only RM4600++ for a 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo (faster then the C25G), 2GB RAM, nVidia GF7400go (same card as on the VGN-C25G), 120GB hard disk (40GB more then the C25G) and 3 year CompleteCover (the best warranty in the business)...

But I'd say, wait... A whole army of new replacement models are coming in a few weeks time... The VAIO C (and everything else, the M1210 included) would (as usual) be hopelessly obsoleted by then...

I'm out of coins to throw too... I guess it's just my long wided RM1 then...

I'm currently trying to find a suitable laptop..so I'm asking for help from all of you gurus..so, here's my requirements :
1) core 2 duo, at least 2ghz
2) must be 2gb ram
3)screen size... preferable 15'
4) graphic card : must be able to support direct X10 and preferably geforce brand, e.g. geforce 8600gt?
5)windows vista home or home premium...as long as it's vista
6)err... maximum rm 5000... cant really cross that
I'm looking specifically a laptop that can deliver a nice or mediocre experience, games such as dawn of war, battle field 2 ,need for speed :carbon and so on and so forth...
will acer's aspire 5290g fits the job nicely? the design and weight isn't all that cool, but as long as it performs as it should then it's ok in my book... so will it be able to deliver a smooth gaming experience? or am i asking too much from an above average laptop?
In short... Yes... The Gemstone would do well (even my M1210 with its aging GF7400go plays DOW and BF2 at medium-high just fine... Carbon's another story though)...

But like I said, it's an untested commodity... The only reviews so far on the net were (IMHO) not THAT in depth... We need somebody here to get their hands on it and test it silly... blacktrix?

can compare benq s41 and acer gemstone for me?
from feature, spec., price, ...................
S41 = 8600GS (slower), cheaper, low chances of heat problems (BenQ lappies have goon heat management, so far)
Gemstone = 8600GT (faster), a bit more expensive, higher (unproven) chances of heat problems (based on past Radeon x1600 Aspires)...
