You should realise benQ does not have a laptop service center in the whole of NZ.

On the other hand, As much as I hate Acer, the Gemstone does change my view of the typical acer. That new gemstone with a much powerful 8600M GT is just Rm500 plus and Acer's exposure to the world market is way better than that of the benQ
*
The First Pre-Review of the Gemstone on the net... Sorry if the link has been posted before... sweat.gif

Is it just me, or does the part about the gaming performance just scream "underclocked GPU"... shakehead.gif I mean, look at the Asus G1S performance with the same card (search the net for a forum thread about the 8600M GT in the G1S)... More beautiful underclocking from the kings of heat management?

Keep in mind, its a pre-review... But it seems like sad news to Gemstone hopefuls (me included)... rolleyes.gif

which 1 is better? acer aspire 5920 or benq s41, any idea?
*
Like tplcaik said, from specs... The 5920 has better graphics (even though underclocked, still quite faster then the S41), but nobody knows if the thermal management (the vents and fans) are better then in current Acers... Plus there's the issue with the build quality, nobody knows how well it's built yet...

The S41 should have good thermal management (like the previous model), and a faster processor, but the GPU is a bit crappier then the Gemstone...

So, your call... Both are not really out yet so nobody really knows which one is better... icon_rolleyes.gif

Hi all, need your recommendation here:

I have RM8K to spend on new notebook.

Recommend me the fastest, lightest and loaded with practical features with that amount of budget.

My normal use are surfing and office works.

Thanks in advance
*
With that amount of budget, the MacBookPro... No question about it, the sleekest, fastest, lightest laptop at that price range... The 15 incher is listed at RM7,499, use the extra money to get Windows so that you can use both OSX and Windows (if you need it)... icon_rolleyes.gif

Besides, you'll be free from viruses in OSX... I personally like dealing with them critters, but I don't think many people share my sentiments... sweat.gif

*
But he also mentioned fastest and most practical for RM8k... If I recommend him the VAIO G or TX (both within his price range), it's only small, and not worth the RM8k in my opinion... So, the most compact and the lightest 15 incher with the most power comes to mind... icon_rolleyes.gif

QUOTE(Vint @ Jun 17 2007, 10:06 AM)
Please recommend me one

        if not 14"
*
BenQ S41...

Why not Dell? The new Inspirons (if you wish to wait) looks rad and well built as well... icon_rolleyes.gif

QUOTE(cedar @ Jun 17 2007, 08:41 PM)
Hi guys, thanks for replying.

Sorry that i raised quite a vague question.

"Fastest" means shorter waiting time when i run excel spreadsheet or loading graphics with the browser for example.

I use ibook currently but i am stucked with it unable to syncronise and allow me to install PPC software which i wanted to buy over the net.
So i'm thinking to have another window based that can run with no problem.

I know the new macbook can run windows too, but not all softs are able to run on the platform. I've been told, that even actviesync cant run on it. Anyone here actually having this problem ?
Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. Checked sony SZ series just now, looks good maybe this is the best deal so far.

But the unit looks fragile. So i hold my decision. Any more good comparable models out there.

How about Lenevo, HP, Twinheadd etc etc
*
Unfortunately, the unit IS fragile... I hate to say this, I have heard bad stories about the build quality of 1 specific VAIO model (the TX) and have personally encountered the horrendous build quality of another (a VGN-SZ44 = SZ cheapest model)... The TX had a broken hinge after 1 year, and it's owner was a very delicate type who takes very good care of his machines to boot...

Now, about the SZ, oh, don't let me get started on the SZ44... Light leakage, hugely noticeable LCD frame gaps, gaps on the sides of the keyboard... And Sony expects me to pay the premium VAIO price for it?

The SZ premium (the most expensive SZ) and the middle model seems to be exempt from this build quality problem (they're solidly build), but then comes my second point of ranting... rolleyes.gif

The recovery options you have on the SZ sucks, big time... Or on ANY VAIO computer actually... You get 1 recovery partition that you can burn to 2 DVDs, with NO OPTION WHAT SO EVER TO NOT INSTALL NORTON AND EVERY OTHER BLOATWARE THAT COMES WITH THE VAIO WITH YOUR RECOVERY! vmad.gif

Sorry for that... I just can't stand having crap shoved up my... My lil bro uses the VAIO C (it has commendable built quality, BTW), and his lappy is running quite slow with all the bloatware that comes with it...

And if you try reformatting and installing Pure Vanilla, separately bought Vista or XP for the machine, guess what? Sony has no drivers for you... Its not in any of the recovery DVDs and any attempts you make to find them will be answered with a "this action is not supported for your machine" or "there's no drivers for that operating system (especially if you want to use XP) available for your machine" from the Sony people... mad.gif

Try checking the internet for stories of people going through this drama...

But, if you're the sort who doesn't (or have no time to) care about the optimal performance of your machine, by all means... The VAIOs (the SZ44 and TX excluded) are nice, well built machines... Shame about the bloated software package and the fact that the recovery/reformatting options are so bad... mad.gif

At least Fujitsu, even if they bundled everything together, had an option for you to install whatever you want and not to install whatever you don't want... At least for the C2220, which is around 3-4 years old (I dunno about current Fujitsus)...

I don't hate VAIOs people, I actually lust after the FE (if only I had the money and the recovery options wasn't so... bleh...)... icon_rolleyes.gif

So, what fully Windows PC can you get for that money? Get a fully decked out (with the fastest processor, graphics, everything) IBM (now Lenovo) Thinkpad R61 or the famously delayed T61... That should be well worth every cent of your money, and would last a heck of a long time to boot... thumbup.gif

But I still would get the MacBookPro if I were you... Try checking the net about the ActiveSync problems, maybe they have solutions? What Palm are you using BTW? Palm should have ActiveSync running well on OSX (it did, last time I checked, when I was using a Palm Zire - yeah, the first craptastic model)... icon_rolleyes.gif

Sorry about the long winded post people... sweat.gif

Awesome. Has the price for it dropped yet? tongue.gif I also heard that ASUS G1's sound card is not that good. Any complaints about that so far?
*
Sound card is comparable in most laptops (most of it use integrated, motherboard mounted sound chips), but it's the speakers that are the problem... Just use externals, built in speakers on laptops are bound to be crap anyway (even though the dolby thingies on the Gemstone looks interesting, even if it's only a gimmick... I mean just how many watts can you stuff into a such a small, build in sub-woofer?)... icon_rolleyes.gif

And if you care to wait, you'll soon have a competitor to the Acer in the sub RM6k catagory... The new upcoming 15 inch Dell Inspiron replacement model... 8600GT for cheap + the best warranty in the business... icon_rolleyes.gif

The design's a bit bleh to most people though, even if it looks ok to me... thumbup.gif

what difference between amd processor and intel processor?
i need recommendation.
brand: any
budget: below 4k

vista premium, 2gb ram, bluetooh,dvd burner,100-160gb hd
for multitasking,music,multimedia,internet,wifi,photgraphic use

beside this,if i want to pay by installment must has a credit card a?
Are there any other ways of installment?
*
Chill bro... They must've missed it... And besides, search the forums for these models:

1) Compaq V3000

2) HP Pavilion (I forgot which model).

3) BenQ S41 (Which I think fits your bill perfectly)

And avoid ACERS... The last generation of Acers had horrid build quality and heat management problems (or at least the low and mid end models)... The Gemstone (the one in the ads all over the newspapers), might be better (and a steal at RM4600++, a bit over your budget), but we really don't know if Acer have improved or not, in their build quality and heat management... sweat.gif

Again, just me 0.02 sens... icon_rolleyes.gif

LOL. At this rate I'm so going to end up waiting a lifetime to get my laptop since they keep coming up with newer and better stuff. The Dell one (I assume it's the Dell Inspiron 1520?) looks interesting - but nobody seems to know yet whether or not it will be released in Malaysia.
*
It's an Inspiron 6400 replacement model, confirm released in Malaysia (the Dell factory is over here, isn't it?)... The only caveat is when... sweat.gif

But IMHO, the best thing about Dells is it's warranty... If you KNOW you can take care of your computers during and after the end of the warranty period (2 years for Asus), take the G1S... It's got superior build quality... icon_rolleyes.gif

*
LOL... Same thing here... icon_rolleyes.gif

But yeah, it's a good lappy, the G1S... Specs are nice, the size is right... Shame I just can't seem to take care of my lappies right (my previous C2220 fell so many times I lost count... Thank God it's a Fujitsu), so Dell's CC is a blessing to me... thumbup.gif

But that can't stop me from getting jealous... whistling.gif

Hi,
I'm new here..

Looking for some opinions  hmm.gif
- purpose: demanding programming, graphics (photoshop, etc) and occasional game (GMA shld do, GF8400 better)

- weight < 2.5kg
- screen 14" and below, default with the weight I suppose?
- 1Gb RAM, 2GB preferred
- 3 yrs warranty
- santa rosa preferred
- budget 5K preferred, can be higher biggrin.gif

I searched, possible options are below, what do u think?
Any1 can give me the current prices or other suggestion??  icon_question.gif
- Dell XPS M1210
- Compaq V3505-09TU
- BenQ S41
- HP dv2523TX, dv2505TX
- Asus A8Sc

Maybe:
- Vaio SZ (too expensive)
*
Hmm... from your list I'd say...

1. Asus G1s (If you can push your budget that high, and bare the extra weight - RM6988 - it's the perfect lappy)
2. Lenevo/IBM R61 (they're having a promotion or something last I checked - RM4800++, not bad for it's specs)
3. BenQ S41 (Great graphics for the price)
4. Asus A8Sc (Hey, it's an Asus! And santa rosa + 8400m to boot)
5. Dell XPS M1330 (If you can wait a few more months)
6. Dell XPS M1210 (If you cant...)
7. HP DV2523TX, DV2505TX (Nice design)
8. Compaq V3505-09TU (Cheap)
.
.
.
100. Sony Vaio SZ (Not worth the money... The SZ44 especially)

Just my 0.02 sens... icon_rolleyes.gif

QUOTE(katrina727 @ Jun 19 2007, 09:11 PM)
hi , i think to buy new laptop for entertainment only, like watch video , listen music , surf internet, and download using bt..
i hav 2 choices in my mind , hp pavillion dv2314tx or dv6227tx ,
i dunno which 1  better ....
what the dif between core duo and core 2 duo ?
*
The long explaination --> CD = smaller cache, 32bit architecture; C2D = bigger cache, 64bit architecture... In short, the C2D is miles better then the CD... icon_rolleyes.gif

But check other considerations before deciding... Graphics is of a particular concern... If you play demanding (as in 3D) games, take the one with the batter graphics chip... icon_rolleyes.gif

At the moment, these laptops arn't even available on the market, so in terms of performance, there's few who have tested and benchmarked them..... but I still think they should at least add in a 8600GS for that price.......

From the looks of it at the Roadshow in 1Utama the other day, it looks quite nice and feels about right...... but the "model" there showing off the new laptop says it's "only a test model, so it hangs quite alot"....   doh.gif

I kinda like the outside design pattern, but a little "ah beng" for my taste.....
*
Hmm... Outside old gen Acers having horrendous build quality problems (I experienced one myself, my bro's TravelMate had a cracked lid that led to it cracking completely open), infamous heat management problems and equally infamous customer service issues (which every brand has, to be fair), I have to say that the new Gemstones DO have attractive specs... And doesn't look too badly built... icon_rolleyes.gif

And even if it's a test model, hanging a lot IS NOT a good sign... No review on the net has mention how the Gemstone fares in terms of heat management, and it's got a 8600GT on board too... So I hope it won't become a repeat of the overheated tragedies that some Radeon x1600 equipped Aspires turned out to be... sweat.gif

But we won't know until somebody here gets one, right?

QUOTE(derred @ Jun 20 2007, 08:22 PM)
When do u will think u need it? Is that a fixed budget or it can grow over months? StarCraft 2 will be coming soon, and it says will be like somewhere in the end of this year or most prolly next year. If u need it quick for schooling for the next semester or sumthing like dat, then get what john jay's suggest or try to research on Dell's like if they are having student discounts, coupons, go-to school deals etc. Last month the 23-years anniversary cut down 23% some of the products. Never afraid to call em if they are toll-free, ask for whatever discount they can give and im sure they will answer you. U can go details like mentioning ur budget and see what the best they can offer. They prolly couldnt negotiate like 3rd-person does, but they can throw-in student discount or coupon or wuteva. Just ask em.
*
I know Dell has student discounts for the US, but I'm not aware of anything like that here... All we have are their special deals (and some coupons)... I did ask for a student discount, and all they said they had was a discount for their printers... sweat.gif

And I'm waiting impatiently for Blizzard to deliver with the "it can run fine on older hardware" SC2 rumour... icon_rolleyes.gif

QUOTE(Malaysia Boleh!! @ Jun 20 2007, 10:19 PM)
Vaio C series how much now?
*
RM4988 for the VGN-C25G (the one with the GF7400)...

If you want something cheaper for even better specs, get a Dell XPS M1210... Dell's clearing them out cheap at only RM4600++ for a 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo (faster then the C25G), 2GB RAM, nVidia GF7400go (same card as on the VGN-C25G), 120GB hard disk (40GB more then the C25G) and 3 year CompleteCover (the best warranty in the business)... icon_rolleyes.gif

But I'd say, wait... A whole army of new replacement models are coming in a few weeks time... The VAIO C (and everything else, the M1210 included) would (as usual) be hopelessly obsoleted by then... sweat.gif

I'm out of coins to throw too... I guess it's just my long wided RM1 then... icon_rolleyes.gif

I'm currently trying to find a suitable laptop..so I'm asking for help from all of you gurus..so, here's my requirements :

1) core 2 duo, at least 2ghz
2) must be 2gb ram
3)screen size... preferable 15'
4) graphic card : must be able to support direct X10 and preferably  geforce brand, e.g. geforce 8600gt?
5)windows vista home or home premium...as long as it's vista
6)err... maximum rm 5000... cant really cross that

I'm looking specifically a laptop that can deliver a nice or mediocre experience, games such as dawn of war, battle field 2 ,need for speed :carbon and so on and so forth...

will acer's aspire 5290g fits the job nicely? the design and weight isn't all that cool, but as long as it performs as it should then it's ok in my book... so will it be able to deliver a smooth gaming experience? or am i asking too much from an above average laptop?
*
In short... Yes... The Gemstone would do well (even my M1210 with its aging GF7400go plays DOW and BF2 at medium-high just fine... Carbon's another story though)... icon_rolleyes.gif

But like I said, it's an untested commodity... The only reviews so far on the net were (IMHO) not THAT in depth... We need somebody here to get their hands on it and test it silly... blacktrix?

S41 = 8600GS (slower), cheaper, low chances of heat problems (BenQ lappies have goon heat management, so far)

Gemstone = 8600GT (faster), a bit more expensive, higher (unproven) chances of heat problems (based on past Radeon x1600 Aspires)...

Well, just hope able to play them around 1024X768 medium setting with 25fps at least. I don't wanna miss out the gaming scene even while I busy with my works though. Anyone played the Colin McRae Dirt on laptop with similiar performance than S41?

AC? That's gonna need the 8600GT of the Gemstone, and even with that it's only gonna probably run smooth at medium... sweat.gif

As for me and my M1210, I probably need an XBox 360 for AC... sweat.gif

btw juz checked a few page ago, this s41 really look tempting,is rm3999 the firm price?or it actually cost a few more hundred more expensive depend on where its sold?

my fren do recommend me xps1210 the 7400 is nt bad for mobile gaming, but wouldnt 12 inch is quite small for the display?

how long does it take the dell to deliver the laptop if order from them?i am gonna go UTM next friday o saturday...dunno can make it onot if i am ordering it

can i still been able to get s41 in lowyat?
*
Lets say that processing + boxing + delivery = 4-6 days after order confirmed... Well, you can always tell Dell to deliver it to your university residence... icon_rolleyes.gif

And, what kind of mobile gaming are you expecting? Most current "heavy" games (STALKER, Quake 4, Company of Heroes etc. etc.) would play smooth only on medium settings with the M1210... It should be better with the 8600GS on the S41 (more powerful card)... icon_rolleyes.gif

And the 12 inch screen does take some getting used to, to be honest... icon_rolleyes.gif

But at least you get the best warranty in the laptop business... Dell's Complete"if-you-drop-it-we'll-fix-it"Cover... thumbup.gif

So, in simple terms:

Better graphics (for newer games), more comfortable screen = BenQ S41

More compact, better warranty = XPS M1210

And yeah, the X3000 is a crappy card, only a little bit better then the GMA50... sweat.gif

Compaq V3000... But you only get crappy Intel 950 graphics with C2D... With the Athlon Dual Cores (which are regrettably much worse then C2Ds) you get the better nVidia 6150... icon_rolleyes.gif

I'm currently looking at the following models:
benq s41
dell xps 1330
asus A8sc

anyone can recommend similar specs from other brands? You can exclude those which are heavy (3kgs ++) as i'm looking for lightweight laptops.

Dell's 1420, much cheaper then the M1330, and with similar spec... Larger 14 inch screen too... The only con, plastic build... No magnesium/aluminium lid/chassis (which the M1330 has)... icon_rolleyes.gif

Haha... The only thing that comes to my mind with a sub 3000 brand is (ironically) the V3000... Dunno why, maybe it has to do with my Low End Acer allergy... sweat.gif

Well that just crossed out a lot of good matches to your requirements within that price bracket (Dell 1520, Acer 5920, BenQ S41)

Next in line? ASUS G1S = RM6999, MBP = around RM7K... Both highly recommended though... sweat.gif

Sorry, but I don't think you can get anything that's not a Dell/Acer/BenQ within that price bracket, with that kinda specs... icon_rolleyes.gif

A lot of GeForce 8400 laptops from Asus around RM4K though... Not up to GF7600 level though... sweat.gif

EDIT: And there is NO LAPTOPS that feature a 7600 class card that can be considered as LIGHT, except maybe the MacBookPro... icon_rolleyes.gif

I'd take the HP Compaq too, cause of the fact that I think it's a bit more reliable long term then the Acers (not Acer bashing ppl, I just honestly think so)... IMHO the Compaq has better heat management, and is a bit more compact (no pun intended) then the Acer... AND, the additional 40GBs of hard disk space WILL be useful, trust me... thumbup.gif

And, is the X3100 a good card? Well, MILES better then the Intel GMA 950... On par (and sometimes even better than) intergrated GeForce 7150s or Radeon 1200s... thumbup.gif

I don't really get what you are trying to say but from what I understand, you are inferring that the Toshibas are superior than the Dells? Well, I'd like to say it's really the user's preference, Dell with its (I dare say) brilliant customer service as compared to other manufacturers, locally that is, but with much to learn in its quality part(?) and the Toshibas with its superior (hearsay) build quality but not as good as Dell in the CS department.

Well said, buddy... And Dells nowadays have a helluva better QC IMHO (and Toshies are manufactured in the Philippines nowadays, with - I dare say - crap QC... Check the net for more info), so like I said before, the "Toshies PWN Dell" mentality just doesn't work anymore... icon_rolleyes.gif

And for the record, Acers aren't half bad nowadays too - if only they aren't so darned hot... sweat.gif

But yeah, you have to wait for delivery, which is actually why Dells are cheap... icon_rolleyes.gif
