Here are some of the example shots on USTC comparing 400D & D40...

My friend D40 Picture Setting is Normal.
35mm f5.6 1/60 ISO800 EV+0
My 400D Picture Setting is Standard - Saturation +1.
55mm f5.6 1/60 ISO800 EV+0.7
What I like about Nikon D40
1. Colour (Maybe Canon can set like Nikon's?)
2. How they display the information of your pictures when you review
3. Nice Interface
4. Auto ISO (I'm not sure others find this useful or not)
Correct me if I'm wrong... And hopes this help...

As KRW said... the Auto ISO is really a useful feature, although there is need to change the settings if playing with longer exposures...

Being a newbie with too many things to worry about apart from ISOs, it's really a function i can't live without, but that's personal...
