My old phone broke. I'm looking for a phone that:
- has a long battery life
- can run mobile games smoothly (high graphic, no graphic lag issues, etc)
- overall fast performance + good RAM
- support 4G LTE

I'm still a student so I don't have money to buy expensive phone like the latest Samsung or Apple series. I don't want to ask my parents to waste money for me either. I hope someone here can recommend me some affordable phone with good qualities like Samsung / Apple. We all know that Samsung and Apple are only expensive because of their famous brands so I'm hoping I can find something cheaper but with similar functions.

Please recommend me phones between RM600 - RM1000. Thanks a lot! rclxms.gif

(P/S: I tried to Google it but there are too many answers rclxub.gif )

Go for Mi A1 . Android P guaranteed, monthly security updates, quick patches and bug-less (bugs keep at mininal).

You are a student and its unlikely you will change your phone within 1-2 year like the rest of income-stable LYN forummer. Thus, I think the choice is obvious.

If you pandai cari, you can get it at RM8++ for official MY set. If you can wait longer, maybe you can see a miracle. Some people managed to get it at RM6++ during the 3 consecutive large scale sales on Lazada last December 2017.

Although the battery is 3k mAh, its only need around 1 1/5 hours for the battery to fully charge. And the battery seems durable too. Some users had achieved spectacular SOT on official ROM if that's important to you.

You can read more on the Mi A1 dedicated thread on the Android section.

Redmi Note 4 currently on android 7.0 and I doubt it will even receive android 8.0 Oreo. But thanks to MIUI, you will still receive some syatem updates but don't expect it to be quick.
Battery also good but some users have reported decrease in SOT on current MIUI9 version its running.

Is android 8 much better than 7 ?

You can read about it here. The latest the android OS version, the better it'll become, the better the user experiences.

So if you were me you'd choose Mi A1 over Note 4?

Hmm, it's hard for me to choose so. Well, I'll try.

Redmi Note 4 - It's running on MIUi 9 based on android 7.0 which contains plenty of useful and fancy features. It also will receive system updates that may fix bugs, some patches, new features introduction and etc, although it takes some to very long times for MIUi devs to roll out the updates. And user will probably stuck on that android version for the rest of life (a bit exaggerated hehe biggrin.gif , until you decide to get new phone) since Xiaomi never good at enrolling out the android upgrade towards its MiUi-running devices. For example :When Redmi Note 3 been launched (android Lollipop) -> Redmi Note 3 [year 2018] (stuck on android Marshmallow). Battery is indeed large, can last for a 2-5 days with minimal to moderate usage. Heavy usage sure 1 day. Now for 32gb + 3gb RAM Redmi Note 4 official set can get at RM605 and below, which is of course a large saving over Mi A1. I'm not saying stuck on android 7.0 is bad, but having the latest android OS version is always the most welcoming.

Mi A1 ( Android One ) - No Miui, running on stock vanilla android OS. You may find it bland and a bit boring. To get some features like in Miui, you need to install 3rd party apps which somebody might find it's a hassle. Internal storage is 64gb, so there is no need to fear of insufficient storage available. Due to its Mi A1 is in Android One programme, it has been promised to get the latest android OS upgrade (untill android P) + monthly security & system patch updates ( which is rather quick/on time ). Bug-less (bugs keep at minimal) because its on stock vanilla android which make Google capable to keep it under control, hence more optimized. Got dual camera features & USB type-C tongue.gif . Can say feature proof too rclxms.gif The drawback is the price right now which is around RM999 - RM850 and the battery capacity 3k mAH. But if you see flagship smartphones battery today, all below 4k mAH.

Conclusion : For long-term usage and for the sake not to feel like being way left behind, I think I'm more towards Mi A1 nod.gif . But if having spare money from your given budget also matters, go for Redmi Note 4 (although some people said its rear camera photos is trash unsure.gif )

Anyways, have you check other brand like Oppo eg : Oppo A77 & Vivo ?

Asus Zenfone Max Plus M1 - RM899

I was looking for a backup phone for offshore use and considered Redmi Note 4 & Asus Zenfone 4 Max, and by a stroke of luck, I stumbled upon Zenfone Max Plus M1 which was just released before Christmas 2017. Bought the phone and never looked back. Spec-wise, it's the best in class for smartphones under RM1000. Doesn't feel cheap too!

I saw people complaining it drain battery to fast although it has 4k mAH battery. Is it happen to you ?
BTW, it use MediaTek chipset. From my reading, many people dislike MTK so much due to several reasons and it had influence my brain as well 😄.

Asus Zenfone line are indeed good. My old but still reliable Zenfone 5 is still healthy & strong. Same with my ma's Zenfone 2. But I hate when Asus launched new Zenfone model, they kinda gave some sort shitty update that make the overall user experience is no longer pleasant and then just left them behind. Need to revert back to old firmware build and stuck there. Same with my past Samsung phones too. Today, I don't know whether they still practice out the Planned Obsolescence or not, as I have migrate to other brand.

In term of further support eg : firmware update/bugs fixing, warranty, user community, warranty claim etc , does OPPO good at it ? I'm not familiar with OPPO, as I think OPPO smartphones were overpriced compared to its specs (but still cheaper than Samsung ). Lots of unnecessary large scale advertising , I should say 😅 .

Still good?

Thinking of getting my first Oppo... But have been hearing negative feedback sad.gif

Thoughts anyone?
I mean, I'm still thinking about the thread that says... Best phone between RM600 - RM1000?

Just that I'm thinking about Oppo because it has Call Recording function. All other phones no longer able to do so with it's inherent dialer.
