hey guys;

i got a friend who can airbrush pretty well. so i decide to refurbish my guitar to remove the "battle scar". i was informed that it is polyurethane finished. so i need help on what are the procedures to layer it. can i just apply new color on top after filling in the scars? what type of paint? acrylic ok? what do i do to obtain the poly finished back? i was thinking of using just flat based paint, so i don't have to do the polyurethane part. so any help from the knowledgeable? notworthy.gif

I assume your friend who is good in airbrushing, does art work for PC Casings, Gundam models or maybe a Car Tuning art works .... and haven't done a paint job on guitar before.

Even if he's willing to airbrush your guitar for free or for a small amount of money, i would recommand you to send your guitar to a person who actually knows how to paint one.

You're dealling with wood here ... not plastic nor metal. If he makes a mistake, that mistake might in a way effect your guitar's sound, playabitily and its looks. Besides, he'll need to remove all the pickups, wires, tremolo and etc out from the guitar first. If he mix the paint too thick .... you'll have a hard time putting those equipment back.

Pros exist for a reason. Use them.

fills with super glue? i was thinking epoxy filler for wood. then again, super glue made more sense since it's tranlucent. thanks dude. a question, "that" guitar is tranparent purple right?

@TheWhacker:

yeah pro exist for a reason. but then again, the job is not too difficult if done with care. example, you can send your guitar for pro setup for some fee, but you can easily do it yourself if you're willing to learn. plus, i'll only send the body, all wiring and removal of hardware will be on my part. which i've done before.

hmm somehow missed this.
yea its transparent purple.

why epoxy filler for wood? you want to strip it to the wood?
no need.
so back again to fill in the dents etc on the poly clearcoat with superglue, then just spray over.
and since its a matt finish, you dont need so many layers, 3-4 is enough.

btw, i just filled up some paint chips in my peavey with nailpolish.
but since the peavey is a poly finish, you can still see the touchup but only if you look at it in reflected light.
basically looks similar to how you see oil drops in water.

cheap nailpolish works best, contains nitrocellulose, toluene and color only.
just their brushes sux, cos its so hard to apply a thin layer.
so the bottom usually hasnt dried properly, so gotta keep redoing the touchup til its right.
