after getting my new iMac, I discovered some problems. I'm already using version 10.4.9 but ya I still have these problems. You see, whenever something get's installed(eg from Safari), it doesn' appear in the desktop, instead you get the download(I'm not sure how to explain this, it's like STILL the thing with the bar in it but actually the file is ALREADY downloaded!!!). So, What I did was click that, and it just disappeared...weird. I went to Finder, and clicked Deskto from there, BOOM the file was there! Why is this happening to my iMac!!! And something simillir happens to my Trash too... when I empty it, it doesn't go out from the Trash, it's still there!(Although I'm pretty sure it's definately deleted!) In the Trash, I click the file that I have ALREADY emptied, then it disappears...oh I need help... And I hope I won't need to bring my Imac to Apple or something, I mean, I'm just a kid, and my dad will get real angry if he finds out...

That's normal. I believe what you've downloaded are in .DMG format (a type of disk image file).
By default, Safari will open certain file type once it's completed downloading.
The moving bar you saw are actually the progress of verifying the download and mounting the DMG file. Once successfully mounted, Safari then remove the original compressed file leaving the DMG alone. You can disable this by looking into Safari Preferences.

You no need to scream and yelling like the end of the world (making yourself looks like a donkey). Just post you problem in a more organized way. It help ppl to understand and eventually helping ppl to reply you correctly.

If anything goes wrong, there's still 1 year warranty. enjoy ur mac.

2 Tips for you samus_ng,

Make it as a good practice to Run Disk Utility\ Repair Disk Permissions after performing new application/ software installation.

Secure Empty Trash will force to empty the Trash bin if command Empty Trash failed. But please ensure the files in Trash bin are not in-use by other Applications.

I don't see any point to alter the permission.
and what's the point of quoting my reply?

Well... abgzam is correct. Need to get use to disk permission. But then if the problem persist, at best, restore your OS by using the DVD that come with your iMac. Just refer to your DVD's instruction and you will be fine.

As for abgzam's advice, go to your "Utilities" folder then select "DIsk Utilities". Thereafter select your HDD volume on your left hand side and click "Verify Disk Permission". If the report shows some error, just click "repair". But if the problem persist... just reformat it.

For me, I dont really like this kind of problem when it always annoying us. Normally, I just re-format the whole thing. Plain simple but effective.

Launch Terminal

Type this

sudo diskutil repairpermissions /

Or just do like the rest said and repair permissions. If that fails , its time to update the prebindings...There are some frontends for it but I still prefer the good old terminal

I kind of think this repair permissions / update prebindings stuff is an old wives' tale.

I've been using MacOSX heavily every day since pre-launch back in 2000 or whatever, have worked with thousands of Macs, and I've never once done it. Never experienced a problem that it would have solved.

I think the only case in which it's actually necessary is when a partially-failed version upgrade or incomplete install left something inconsistent.

Some Mac gurus also say that repair permissions regularly
is not necessary. Prebinding is automatic too after a new
app is installed so there's not much need to run it manually.

I wonder if Samus has cleared out this system and user caches
recently. Is he running any 3rd party GUI hacks?
