By default, Safari will open certain file type once it's completed downloading.
The moving bar you saw are actually the progress of verifying the download and mounting the DMG file. Once successfully mounted, Safari then remove the original compressed file leaving the DMG alone. You can disable this by looking into Safari Preferences.
