Is September a good time to travel to Kansai?
*
QUOTE(Human Nature @ Jun 1 2018, 01:47 PM)
Not summer hot weather and not within the peak time. Some websites say that it's the raining season. Too early for autumn leaves, so wondering about the scenery too.
*
if you travel during the change between the seasons, it would rain every single day for a week or two sweat.gif just watch out for that

Oh dear, you're really into the yuzu one of my friend liked it.

Ah you're talking about Tsukemen. The one in your photo is tsukemen, the dry noodle where you dip into the sauce. Yes I've tried Menya and I loved it. Wanted to go again this round but couldn't due to lack of time. The Menya Musashi in Shinjuku is the main branch (which is why you'll see the word "honten"), probably that's why it's always full! In terms of Afuri, there were recommendations for it so I thought why not, let's give something new a try  if you don't try it, you won't know whether you like it or otherwise.

In Ichiran, they have some new items compared to 1.5 years ago when I last went. There's a braised meat and matcha beer.

Matcha

yes, tsukemen! wub.gif wub.gif ah, I didn't know that, thanks for the info. next time I'll just visit the main branch

when u mentioned braised meat, I could only remember the tantan ramen I had last month at Nakiryu, the piece of pork was beyond words, worth the extra 500 yen.

that's interesting, matcha beer hmm.gif sad, there's no ichiran ramen in Ishikawa

Wanna ask about the Nohi bus reservation for Kanazawa <> Shirakawa-go. Does it need to be done way in advance or I can reserve it via Counter at the bus Station? Planning a trip there end January
*
Better reserve it online, less hassle but I think you can also reserve it on the spot although the counter is most probably not inside Kanazawa station (haven’t see it before laugh.gif)

Can you PM me as well? When you said about this now only I thought eh my flight also lands at 9.40pm in KIX. I've already booked a place in Osaka (Charinco Hostel) for a night and I thought there will be hourly train to Osaka (I might read that wrongly).
Also, do I need to change all my money here before travel to Japan? I might spend quite a lot there so thinking need a lot of cash
*
better change in MY than change in JP. you will likely get better rate in MY unless you are converting USD/euro smile.gif

Few questions regarding bank and money in Japan.

1) heard that there is no fee when we withdraw cash from ATM in 7 11? Is it true? I am using Maybank VISA debit card by the way.

2) can we open a Japanese bank account in Japan if we have a temporarily Japanese phone number?

3) this is not about Japan actually. I will be in Japan for 2 months plus under Malaysia travel visa.
Let's say I want to do fund transfer with my maybank online banking while I am in Japan, if I don't activate roaming (say I use Digi postpaid sim in Japan) then I wouldn't receive the 6 digit PAC code and thus I can't make online transaction. If I just activate roaming for that SMS, will I being charged crazy fees from tele provider Digi?
*
1) there’s a few for every withdrawal at the 7-Eleven ATM. Used to withdraw using my Maybank ATM card, fee is around RM24 if I’m not mistaken.
2) most probably no?
3) you won’t get any charges for receiving SMS. I switched off roaming on my Maxis SIM card, still receives SMS just fine

QUOTE(japman @ Aug 8 2018, 02:28 PM)
Hi Japan sifus,  I will be at Kanazawa this December and planning to rent a car to drive from Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go, Takayama and Ainokura Village for a day trip.  There are 5 of us and we feel it is much cheaper to self drive and also we can see more places at our convenience.
My questions are; 1. Will it be easy to drive from Kanazawa to those mentioned places around mid December? 2. Anyone done this route before and care to share some points to look out for?
Thanks in advance.. Cheers
*
If u take the express way, should be fine for most part of the journey. They are cleaned very frequently. The only issue would be the rural/mountainous routes. Last winter I helped an ojisan to get his car back on the road after it got stuck, that was like 2-3am in the morning laugh.gif and, do rent 4wd for better traction, quite a few of my friends smashed their 2wd cars into all kind of stuff during winter due to lost of traction

2) Japanese address as in housing address? I will go to there for intern for 2.5 months. I was told Malaysian will only use normal travel visa since we can go to there for 90 days, but I am not sure if this is the one I will be using.

3) since my Digi postpaid sim most probably has no signal when I am in Oversea, how can I receive SMS?
*
2) are you interning at a JP university? I interned for about 3 months in JP on a normal 90 days travel visa back in 2016. You cannot open any bank account, register for any Japanese phone number or even receive remuneration while you are on the 90 days visitor visa.

3) no worries at all, usually telco will automatically connect to the preferred foreign telco in that country. Just make sure you have enabled international roaming and switch off the mobile data roaming before you travel (eg: Maxis would automatically connect to Docomo network)

Since I will be in Japan for almost 3 months. Anyone know any sim card with internet data that is affordable? Prefer sim over wifi device. I have found one that costs around RM18 per day and think it is expensive

Convenient store got alot to choose from ma.

Supermarket too, both of them is not very expensive. I find myself stupid bringing food there. I manage to find whole unagi for just rm40 @@

But 1 thing i notice, in japan every market can differ in price, like some place rm 80 for unagi, some rm60 and so on.

So try to visit few market n compare the price.

If airbnb try look for with kitchen equipment, can buy from market then cook.

If stay hotel juz buy ready made food from convenient store.

Dont need to stuggle yourself visit japan. Just ask staff which 1 halal.
*
rm80 are usually local eel and rm40~60 are usually from china..also if it's ridiculously cheap (<1000 yen for the whole unagi), those are grilled like 3 days ago, almost trash grade laugh.gif

Came back from Nagoya-takayama- kanazawa-toyoma-nagoya route a few days ago

Overall, a very pleasant drive and tour. 2days of rain and cloudy skies. rather satisfying as it is my first time seeing 'real' autumn colors
