Blofeld if you aren't planning to make hours-long calls then why not just use your own digi/maxis/whatever roaming to make the calls?
*
I don't intend to make hours long calls actually.

I just want to be prepared in case of the rented car breaks down especially in the outskirt areas of Furano, Biei, Asahidake and Sounkyo and I can make immediate emergency call to the car agency.

Just use the sim card as per recommendation on the first page, it does provide 20min talk time as well (to japan number)
*
Thanks for the recommendation. I saw that earlier. That comes together with the Brastel 050 Free App (Voip), right?

Then I was thinking the Skype Credit might be easier to use since I am familiar with Skype.

yesterday evening i got the email from MAS regarding my flight, they will reroute me to Narita Tokyo

now most possibly i will change my vacation to tokyo instead,so i got around 3 days to make a new itinerary  cry.gif

i dont see myself spending rm500 to 1k to just make a trip to osaka/kyoto by shikansen and fulfill our previously planned itinerary  bye.gif
but my wife still fond about the trip to osaka/kyoto  confused.gif

can we find a way for MAS or the travel insurance to pay for my shinkansen ticket ?  laugh.gif
is it true bro ? temples & shrines are closed in osaka & kyoto ?
*
Just curious, if you have to change your flights at the expense of the airline company due to Typhoon for example, how do you go about it?

Do you have to buy new tickets and pay on your own first and claim back later from the airline company?

Or you have to arrange with them through the phone or something?

Only the airline company will have direct answer. But I do see some airline website request the affected customer to look for them. (sound like they won't call the customer for arrangement, but customer have to grab them.. if dun 1 rugi)

If you need to contact them like the AirAsia chat, dunno wait until how long... sweat.gif

I just checked. Apparently Sagano Train doesn't run during winter....  doh.gif  Sad that I will be missing this attraction.
sad.gif

Btw, there is a epidermic going in its rounds in Japan. I heard there is travel advisory not go to Tokyo for now.
*
The only infection I found is measles/rubella infections is on the rise in Japan in 2018.

But the thing is the number of measles cases in Malaysia is way higher than in Japan. It is also rising in Malaysia in 2018.

U should be more worried of getting infected in Malaysia rather than in Japan.

At least Japanese have the courtesy to wear mask to avoid any spread of diseases. Rubella/measles is spread the same way like flu.

Malaysians generally don't care, cough/sneeze here and there without covering mouth.

Noted..... Do we have any vaccines against measles?
You can get vacinnation against Flu/colds. I already got mine, called influenza vaccine.. If Im not mistaken, the doctor did mention once a year. Better be safe then sorry.
*
It's part of the MMR vaccination. Malaysian kids receive two doses of MMR as an infant and when they are 7 years old. Those born before 2002 don't receive this.

Only girls get the rubella vaccination when they were a teen back then.

QUOTE(sweet_pez @ Oct 18 2018, 05:35 PM)
But you see, there are many different types of flu also... the vaccination provided is for general flu or to protect against certain specific type of flu? Just out of curiosity hmm.gif
*
The vaccination for in(flu)enza only covers one strain when there are hundreds of strains out there. And one particular flu strain mutates every year.

The flu is important for those who are likely to get complications from flu like elderly groups, immunocompromised patients, etc.

If you are a healthy person, some experts might say it's not necessary.

And some of us might have been infected with flu and we got over it (thinking it's just a common cold infection) without even realising it.

Hi. I’m new to this forum and need some help with my Hokkaido planning. My party of 5 (2 adults with 3 kids)  will be visiting  a few places in Hokkaido for 10days in Early December.
(1) is it easier to rent a car or use public transport?
(2) Can we use Uber in Japan?
(3) for short trip of about 20mins/13km, how much would be the taxi fare?

Thanks!
*
1.

If u're within Sapporo, public transportation will do.

If you are going to the outskirts, better rent a car. It's worth it if you're going with a family. Can be even cheaper than paying for a bus to go to the outskirt (to and fro).

2.
I'm not sure. I didnt check it out when i was there. LOL. Either I was using MRT/trains or rented a car.

3.
Taxis in Japan are expensive. Might as well rent a car. There are taxi fare calculator for Japan on the net. U can see for yourself.

Just got back from Japan. The weather there was perfect, apart from the super early sunset at around 4 something sad.gif It only drizzled like twice over the span of 8 days, with no umbrella needed.

My itinerary was as follows:
Day 1 - Arrived at Narita, took skyliner to get to Tokyo
Day 2 - Hakone
Day 3 - Hakone and back to Tokyo - dinner
Day 4 - Akihabara/Skytree/Boat dinner
Day 5 - Nikko day trip
Day 6 - Odaiba - shinjuku - shibuya
Day 7 - Disneyland
Day 8 - Harajuku - shinjuku for final shopping

Every planning was done by my brother in law as he used to study there way way back
*
Is Disneyland extremely crowded as usual?

So, the major attraction in Odaiba is the Gundam statue? That's all?

Well, there's Fuji TV station, Sega joypolis, lots of shopping malls, oedo onsen monogatari and also a giant Ferris wheel. If you're not interested in all of those, then i guess there's no reason for you to go there.
*
wow thanks!

I just know about Sega Joypolis.

Since I will skip Disneyland due to its crowd, I wonder if Sega Joypolis is as crazily crowded like Disneyland?

Is it ok staying nearby Hanzomon station, Tokyo? Looking at Google streetview, seems like an office district.

Not much happening/sightseeing during the night, right?

I’ll be driving for 10 days in Hokkaido this December with 3 young kids.
(1) Is it easy to find a rest area for toilet stops or some light bites? What should I look out for?
(2) Is it convenient to use Waze in Japan?
(3) anyone has experience driving in Hokkaido? Can you share what I need to be prepared on?

Also, as I will be arriving in the New Chitose airport, it says that we can buy the So-Net SIM card through a vending machine at this airport.
(1) has anyone used so-net before? How reliable is the network
(2) is it easy to setup the SIM card on an iPhone 8 Plus?

Thank you in advance for your replies.
*
1. Yes, there are many convenience stores (Familymart, Lawson, 7-11, Seicomart) with toilets inside the store along the main roads. And of course, they sell food and drinks. Sometimes, you will find family/tourist parks along the main road where there are toilets in it. Drive slowly so that you don't miss it. The road signboards (indicating there are toilets in the park - using the normal symbol of man and woman) are usually obvious and clear.

2. I even bother to use Waze in Japan. No jam.

3. Yes, but not during winter. So, I'm not sure how is it like driving during winter. Anyway, the speed limit can be as low as 40km/h in some stretches.

I used pocket wifi when i was in Hokkaido. So, I'm not sure about SIM card.

What is the best way to travel around Kamakura-Enoshima-Fujisawa area?

Train itself is enough?

Or renting a car would be more efficient?

It seems to me like some temples are a bit far from the train stations.

Tokyo Haneda and Tokyo Narita are at two different places.

Go visit Asakusa, then go visit Tokyo skytree before going to Narita

Should be safe leh. My trips I had wife with me, she never felt it was dangerous or anything when going to the ladies bath alone. Not too different from going onsen ba where guys and girls need to split up anyway.

Nozawa Onsen we stayed at Mominoki, Zao Onsen at Suzunoya, both were pretty much the same style of family run old somewhat run down guesthouse with onsen in the basement and shared toilet upstairs.
*
Such guesthouses there is no attached toilet in the room at all?
