Spare parts is a real pain. It's hard to look for and expensive too.

If u're buying an A/T, go for the 1.8 as the 1.6 A/T is really underpowered.

Fuel consumption is about the same as many other cars.

Yup, body parts are a pain the arse. Friend had it (the 1.6 auto) for 5 years, other problems were solved but watch for leaks (it's frameless, so check the frame seals). There are 2.0 V6 halfcuts, and rear cuts too - upgrade potential.

1.8 should be ok, but don't go for the 1.6 (A). Truly, his current W202 C220 (A) consumes less fuel than the 1.6 (A).

HuH? body part hard to find? cry.gif I like the frameless door.
What is half cut n rear cut? sorry,i'm just too new on owning a car.
This will be my 1st car.

U mean upgrade it to 2.0 V6 will be better? can i just buy a 1.6(A) then upgrade it to 2.0 V6? how much it will cost roughly?

BTW,market price for a 97 1.8(A) around rm20k?

RM20k for the 1.8 (A) is cheap. I think no need to upgrade.

Half cut means front portion of the car which includes full engine parts. Some comes with dashboard and some doesn't.

the lantis 1.8 is good enough, sufficient b8 power.
but mind you the older mazda engines consumes bit more petrol, but gives out good power.

you can source out for half cuts & rear cuts, those are the vehicles that has encounter unsaveable accidents that causes them to be chopped of half of it's body. parts are quite rare, but can find. also not expensive, parts wise. however the popularity are increasing, so watchout for the prices.

IMHO, maintenance wise is quite easy when you know to source out the engine parts. Quite the problem is with the bodypart, but the built is good so wear & tear is not very much of an issue, provided checked thoroughly b4 buying the vehicle. Some parts can mix & match with Mazda Familia Neo & even Ford Laser Lynx 4-door hatchback / sedan.
Chassis is very durable & not easily distorted, too. Once you own the vehicle you can check the car's stuff & issues with mazda / ford bros... icon_idea.gif

Just saying based on my experience & observation of a friend owning a ford lynx..
converted engine 3 times already... B8 180, B8 210, and now currently housing KF-ZE wink.gif

despite it being old, the design, IMO, is still acceptable up to this date.

My mistake, I forgot to mention earlier. SS15 is in Subang Jaya tongue.gif

My cousin's boyfriend has a Mazda Lantis 1.6, recently bought a 2.0 V6 halfcut. Seems quite sturdy although rust bubbles are starting to appear, but overall the car doesn't give him much problems.

i have been driving a Lantis for 3 years now and loving every moment. Of course there are the usual wear and tear issue but its not something no one can repair. Maintenance is expensive... i think that is over rated. Its not like maintaining a Proton but its not gonna cost you a bomb either.

There are plenty of chop shop with Lantis part around town (i mean PJ, Subang and KL). I just found a air-con compressor for RM150. I think a Proton air-con compressor cost around that too...

Lantis and Ford Lynx (as with most Ford and Mazda in this country) are mechanical twins, so for most Ford's part will fit nicely.

If you are bored with your 1.6 or 1.8, there is the K-series engine available for upgrade. Most common is the KFZE which is 2.0 V6. This is a really sweet engine and the upgrade cost is cheaper than most Honda.

Not everything is sweet with this car though... the frameless window can sometime be a little nuisance... after years of abuse, there are alway the issue of gaps when you close the door. There are simple solution to this. hop over to the local Lantis forum to meet and learn more about the Lantis.

Bottom line is do some research and then decide. Enjoy.

Just to share, some shots of my friend's previous Lantis (now in the hand of someone else).
He had the sunroof installed due to rust started to appear on the roof.
So the first thing you gonna check when getting used Lantis would be the roof.

How much was the sunroof? Quite cheap at RM500.

i once had the sedan version...
1.8L.... parts are very difficult to get and maintainence is costly..
basic service any shop can do.. but major stuff if u have to go back to C&C, it'll cost u a bomb

sedan wan is quite rare... but lantis hatchback & ford hatchbacks got wan ler...

cool.. but don think i will upgrade it to 2.0 v6.. petrol consumption sure kaoo.. n maintainence much higher...  cry.gif

quite... if layan traffic jam no good. But highway cruise with around 170hp does worth it...
maintenance? same oni I believe, even the V6 design is a bit diff. normal V6 still got 4 cam pulleys, this one 2 oni... haha... damned I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that. Feel like slapping *ss....

QUOTE(demio121 @ Apr 30 2007, 12:04 AM)
i have been driving a Lantis for 3 years now and loving every moment.

Enjoy.

hey bro, do you happen to know a friend of mine drives a renault blue Ford Laser Lynx 4 door hatchback? you seem quite a senior in the community....

the KFZE (2.0 V6) consumption is not at all like what you think. From owner, the KF consumption is better than 1.8 or equal 1.6.

sori... i am dunno anyone that drive a Lynx. Not that i am really familiar with them. I have met a few but not really now them.

Just back from oil change. RM100 for Castrol Magnatec, Ori oil filter, STP engine treatment and labor. That reasonable for me. Lesson learn is... whatever car you drive (excluding those luxury), it can be cheap if you have the mean and it can be expensive if you want it to be.

Added on May 1, 2007, 1:47 ami just realise that the www.my323f.net site is having some trouble lately. There was some inconsistency in the db and some function when cockoo. the register new user function is, unfortunately one of those that is misbehaving.

i live and rot around PJ.

Lantis boot space is pretty premium. I forego a superb speaker box so that i can have space in the boot. I got a el cheapo 10" tube now but its also taking like 20% space.

you reali want to think over putting a NGV tank in the boot.

Attached Image Attached Image Yo, any people still active here?
I already spot one Lantis 1.6 manual and now dealing with that guy. That lantis got full Mazda Speed bodykit, 18" sportrim and spoiler. I attach some pic. He sell it at 25k. How you guys think? Is it worthed? I'm seeking all active MAzda Lantis forum and site. Coz I want to get good price for both maintainance and spare parts.
Looks like most of people here driving Lantis. So can give me comments and advise about the Lantis that I'm about to take?

the mazda lantis is still one of the best car around from 90's. cheap and reliable.
am still keeping my lantis 1.8m. bought it 2nd hand when i just started working.
now let my uncle use and maintain it.
no major problem except finding the throttle body in halfcut shop and those
door / windows problem. sadly. need to replace the whole door doh.gif
stock car handle very well.

btw, there is another mazda thread here.
check out lantis club at http://www.my323f.net/
i forgotten my password there ever since i let my uncle use the car tongue.gif

Hi everyone! Probably I will get one Lantis, but still looking for a nice one. To share with you guys here, previously I just saw one Lantis daily parking under the LRT station nearby Amcorp Mall. A nice Lantis which still with the original Mazda sport rim. It's maroon colour and manual transmission, number plate WEM 7422, perhaps it's the one among the members here?

huh! someone brought up this ancient thread and you're in trouble.... jk tongue.gif
nah! spare part for lantis is getting rare. and for the frameless top panel door, they comes in 1 package. not by parts.
you need to find the whole door unit from halfcut shop.
a whole door unit used to cost around 350 bucks at halfcut shop in klang. but that was more than 4 years ago.
kinda ridiculous. hence the reason i sold my lantis.

about the door window, just have to change the window bushes.

i have a friend doing this, just pm me and i will give you his numbers.

below rm300 can fix all your 4 windows into mint conditions.

and parts for mazda (in halfcut shop) is not that expensive lol, i always get the price much cheaper than honda and mitsu.

Yup worth every penny.. many cheap ones for sale now because owners upgrading to bigger ones.. mostly reluctant sale for all..

Probabaly one of the most balanced cars on the road now...great drive too.. parts not impossible to get as it shares decent amount of parts from the Kia Spectra and Ford. So many spare part shops still carry things.

Normally main issue will be a shaky window due to the frameless nature of this car but then again its an easy fix with around rm 50-60 for the 1 door with new PU bushes.

You can go FB look for Lantis Club Malaysia.

Hope this is of help

most important is to replace the door rubber seal 1st tongue.gif

then you're good to go.

but i notice more Mazda Astina than Mazda Lantis on the road, why ar ? hmm.gif tongue.gif

( Mazda Astina onwer here ) tongue.gif

Nice nice. I like the design too and was looking at the V6 and b8 210. Nice peppy car.
Reason why i forgo is because the windows are frameless and prone to rattles unless all bushes are good condition. Hard to find parts. Im using it daily and at penang nobody uses lantis, so mechanics will try n error a lot when repairing...my assumptions la

No.. i tested a mazda v6 and another b180 mazda familia. The v6 is nice but rattles and the b180 really bad condition so didnt buy. I finally went for sentra b13 with sr20ve 20v, 204hp engine with 6 speed manual.

V6 is nicer. Smoother.

haizzz.. u are the 2nd person to tell me this car's maintainence is costly..
but i've met around 5 lantis's drivers.. they told me maintainence is ok wor.. -.-  sweat.gif
really  :x

Should I or Shouldn't I ????  cry.gif

You are asking about a 25 year old sporty'ish car. What makes you think maintenance won't be expensive, parts wont be hard to find and the possibility the car has not been modded by unqualified people to high heaven already?

Lol. Logic lar.

Buy or not depends if you are depending on this as a daily driver or a collector/fun weekend car.

Hehe. I got experience with 3 cars all 20+ years old modified sporty cars. Maintenance slightly expensive because i change oil more frequently, and when i bought the car it took few k to restore it. Other than that its like new car.
Now im daily driving a 2001 civic with 2001 k20a type R engine. Modded to 260 hp.

On my test car, the v6 revvs smoothly. But the windows were rattling.. the car needs to fix all the bushings and rubber seals to enjoy the ride hence i didnt buy it previously.

Also the turning radius is quite big for a small car. I like the v6 la due to its smoother than the turbo. Turbo also slightly higher hp only than the v6, so dont have the 'kick'.

Yeah because i am comparing the turbo to evo3 in proton wira haha. My previous car before is a toyota corolla seg with 4age 20v blacktop with 6 speed manual. 165hp when stock but mine is not stock d. So the v6 is almost similar but smoother.

it's soo damn tempting to get 1, sadly i will pass. Wanna save few more bulks just in case IF i'm needed to rebuild most stuff aka bushing and etc since the car is more than 20 years.

How much is it and how is the condition the current car u are looking at?
Toyota seg AE101 is good too if it comes with the blacktop engine hehe. Its a better car compared to my sentra b13 although power is 25% lesser, the fun factor is more.

yoo bro, i managed to find 1 stock BPT for sale, in relatively good condition. The engine barely got 'turbo lag' as it got quite decent low-end torque despite turbocharged car.

the interior is going to need proper rebuild but the engine/gb is good ( i drive it around, vroom2 pshhh )

truthfully it's not that bad, interior can be slowly fixed, i focused more on engine/gearbox/suspension and frameless door thngy.

idling W/O AC ngam, a bit high tp easy to fix, tappet? bising skit, probably kena set blik but otherwise it's really good. no smoke, no available leak. i think engine wise it's solid 9/10 since it's relatively new transplanted into the car ( 1 year i think ).

price wise, haven't finalize yet.

if you got extra bucks, go for cheapest working(suspension/brake/gearbox) Lantis, throw away the engine and plonk BPT/V6 KFZE engine on it and you are set to go, stock power from BPT/V6 KFZE is more than adequate. However, if you got way more money, look for BPD engine.
