Well, thanks for sharing at least. Too bad you don't have any skilled furniture workers. Usually the value added and margins are at the last stage. Before that, your raw wood is just a commodity. But after work done on it, it becomes a valuable product.

I think simple things like table or stools (even just the raw tree trunk) could be products you can consider in the future. Then again, there are many other factors to consider. Guess we don't appreciate solid wood furniture unlike in overseas.
*
Ya, your statement is exactly my think few years before, but it still stuck at beginning even until today, because of the workers issue.

Thats why we are only able to sell raw wood.

We have plenty of space left in our factory here, what we need is skilled person like @AR188 .

Even our wastes can create alot of stunning project nod.gif

Great minds think alike  laugh.gif

Do keep sharing here and your FB on your customers project. Who knows, maybe they'll be opportunities in the future.

A lot of time, people just treat furniture as a consumable rather than a piece of art. Good wooden furniture especially those in the past were really intricate. Now, finding workers to even convert raw wood into simple furniture becomes a problem. I can't imagine how skilled those furniture craftsman were in the past. No nails also, some no glue also.

Ya, i am doing it but not full time update, since sometimes i am busying, day by day, it passed biggrin.gif

Really happy to see your comment here, learn alot. Will try to find a way about it.

Hi All Sifu,

I would like to get some education on timber usage/type application in Malaysia/KV market.

What is the different between the timber like balau/nyatoh (high-end type) compare to those selling in large construction material suppliers? Are they the same type of wood just not as finished as those mentioned here?

Basically I trying to figure out, are these "high-end" timber are meant for outdoor durability and they are being seen/touch by the user thus they are more expensive. and those "cheaper" type selling at construction supplier are mainly for structural/framing and eventually hidden from user thus they are cheaper type of wood?

Hope my question make sense  sweat.gif

Hi, hope my answer is right and can help you smile.gif

For heavy type (or strong) wood like balau, cengal, merbau, resak, kranji etc, they strong and last longer in out door even without treatment mostly is because of it peak density per wood, so it is strong and stand for wet condition.

For other soft wood or medium , medium hard wood (usually they will call β€œmix hard wood” or mhw), they are softer and less packed in density, so it is light, suitable for light project, furniture, or thing that don’t need extreme support, or less burden to structure etc. One good thing for softer wood is easy to work for carpenter to shape or refine it.

To make soft wood to become last longer and water resistant as possible, usually they add kin dry (heat) , steam, chemical etc . But it will still not strong as above heavy wood when come to extreme job. But if use it right, it can as useful as heavy wood smile.gif

Hi PowerPC, thanks for the reply. Not really the answer I am looking for...  biggrin.gif  but appreciate it none the less.

Maybe my question was not very clear. Hmm... how should I put it. Ok... I am trying to DIY a small deck at my garden so i am trying to come outwith a material list. So I know the deck boards and the rim joists I should use these so called high-end wood like balau,cengal,resak...etc because they are exposed to the weather AND they will be seen and touch by people. and these woods are pricey.

Then my question I have is, what about those structural members of the deck that are hidden from view and touch (like posts/joists). Sure, they need to be strong for obvious reason  but they dun need to be pretty to the eye and touch. So what type of wood should i use? Yes, I could just use those high-end wood but i would like to keep the cost down so what type of wood is suitable (strong) and maybe cheaper (coz dun need to look nice).

Any sifu can advise. Thanks.

You are welcome biggrin.gif , Maybe i am not really understand your previous question laugh.gif

Now i understand dy biggrin.gif

Is those "part" expose to rain and sun ? If yes, you can still use Mix Hard Wood (MHW) which usually have chemical and treated, even it is still not as strong as premium hardwood.

Hope my answer help nod.gif

Hi PowerPC, again thanks for the reply. So these mixed hardwood are cheaper than those "highend" hardwood right? What price range should I be expecting for mixed hardwood?
*
You are most welcome biggrin.gif

Usually, it will be about 40 to 50% cheaper than premiun hardwood, depend on the dimension you looking (custom size or common size), the length you request will also effect the price range biggrin.gif

thinking to buy smaller piece as coffee table first, worry the colour not ngam with me.

I also worry they send me first level polish only, I need to DIY then habislah... πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
*
You wont be wrong if buying from him, the color will be change overtime since it is natural material.

The finishing level from them is nearly right to use, but still need some touch up to the finest detail, depend on your taste. rclxms.gif

Bro, wanna seek your opinion...

btwn Chengal, Balau, Surian Batu which one is the darkest? like American Walnut kind of dark..?

haha.. your cousin got take walk in customer? susah to communicate on Laz la..
*
Cengal is the darkest from your selection, but there has no texture like walnut. Usually, the greater the texture has, the softer the wood.

Yes, you can walk in but mostly need to order 1st and come again collect when the wood is ready.

hi sifu, any way to treat powder post beetle... bought a merbau live edge slab previously but the edge keep on bore by beetle, i had tried borax solution but not work. any solution?
*
Hi, the "white part" of merbau (usually outer edge, depend on size, can deep as 2 inches diameter) is the softer part, and it will be vanished overtime, it is nothing to stop it. The center part of merbau is hardest, and the boring service will end there. It is nothing much can do about it. Somemore, too much chemical will hurt the slab later.

QUOTE(Angry Clerk @ Jan 10 2022, 01:04 PM)
Thanks for your reply, yesterday he replied me later at night, recommended Merbau, a bit over my budget πŸ˜†πŸ˜† later check with him again

Easier just to order from a manufacturer that provides everything.

Can try Balaks (Penang based manufacturer) - they do delivery around Malaysia.]

The web look clean and professional. Saw this shop many months ago in FB advertising, look like a subsidiary company from a door frame factory. Their idea is fresh and look promising !

just made a few for clients. in the market these stand tables with solid wood too basic choices. either rubber wood panel with stain or some cheap slab wood cut to size.

what we do is something diff , and usually offered by higher end stand desk makers in usa (usually they offer walnut maple etc, usd2k level)

but i try mix local and imported wood.
