Hi All,

I hope this would be a good & fair forum for me to inquire about purchasing a merc.

My brother currently has a 2nd hand W210 and is now thinking of a possible upgrade. Problem is he is a little fickle minded. So i am trying to help him out with the experts from here.

His first thought is to get s W221 within the budget of 150K which hopefully can come with as many bells & whistle as it can like the media & sound system as well as the built in phone. So anyone know a good location to get 1 from? Also what should be the key things to look for to help ensure its a good buy. its been a lot of work trying to navigate around so much info related to this car yet not find the right answers

The 2nd option my brother is toying with is to maybe get 2 cars - a W220 & W211.

From what i have been reading (and i could be wrong) seems like the W220's airmatic is more of an issue as many ask questions on replacing it. Is it true that in the W220 this is a key pain point? Also how about the electronics?

I also noticed there does not seem to be any S280L. Was the LWB only with the 320?

On the W211 - what would be the key things to look out for? Btw the cabin space is smaller then the W210 right? or is it just me feeling so?

Really hope to get some good insights from the sifus here.

Hi All

A follow up question about pricing. With regards of getting the W221 checked before buying, a Hap Seng Star rep quoted approximately RM2K. This sound way to high considering that its only for checking and diagnostics.

Anyone here can help validate this or provide a better recommendation?

For w211, I would recommend to get the year 2007 version onwards.
The W211 most common problem are with the SBC Pump, which needed to be reset or changed after a certain period of braking. If the unit is broken, the cost to change it can be upto RM5k to 6k.
The facelift version one has changed from using sbc to adaptive braking or something like that, cant remember the actual term.
I am not familiar with S-class, currently using the w204 only

Thanks for this feedback. So far was not able to find a good W211 yet

The W220 is quite solid. Yes, it does have the occasional issues and the airmatic is one of them. You can be lucky and have no issues but there are some who have constant issues with them. I happen to have owned one (S320) without any problems. Electronics were ok on mine as well. MB did produce S280L but they are rare in Malaysia probably because not many were brought in (or assembled locally).

The W211 has been improved upon so i would think it would have less issues compared to the W210. Having not owned one (either the W210 or the W211) i cant say much more than that.

Just to update and get additional feedback. Saw a W221 model this afternoon. It is a S300L year 2007 with a mileage of approx 80K. Found a workshop in Gombak that could check the car. He found that there was no electronic concern but there was leaking oil and the compressor was louder then it should be indicating a possible issue. Few other parts as well were a problem but fixable. The rear tires were worn and need to be replaced. The rear dust cover for the airmatic was totally torn. But driving the car there is no sound or knocking to be heard.

The Mechanic said it is fixable based on what he can see with an approx cost of RM5- 6K. This does not include the tires & airmatic dust cover replacement which apparently is not possible since it normally comes as an entire set.

as for the bluetooth settings and phone sync up it seems like only C&C can do it and i was able to speak to a technician from the C&C in batu caves that says it would most likely need an update only and the cost of this check can be about RM300/hour. So he recommends to do the whole car check for about RM1K

So would this car be worth the effort to have it fixed up with the knowledge we have now of its condition? The sale Price of course will have to be reduced due to the work that would need to be done.

Hi All,

Will be soon taking over my brothers W210. Wanted to know a few things

1.) currently it has the front tires as 245/40ZR18 and the rear as 265/35Z18. These are kinda expensive to maintain (The last time he changed all four it cost a little over RM 4K for toyo)

So i would like to change them to a more budget friendly yet safe drive size. I believe these will also require me changing the rims.

Anyone can advise what are the possible things to look out for to help ensure safety is kept at the highest priority when doing this change?

2.) Wanted to get advise where can i go to to install reverse cam and parking sensors with wave light.

Thought bout getting it from online as the price is cheaper but then need to find a shop that can install it is another hassle i feel. Any advise.

3.) The current steering wheel is a full original leather type. I wanted to update this to the half wood trim type. what would be the things to look out for safety and price wise.

Any good place that can be recommended to do these update at a really reasonable price?

W211 vs w210

I all,

I am looking to upgrade from the current 1997 W210 to a W211. Would like to ask what are the things i should look out for when doing this change

I am looking for the 2007 model and above since apparently from this year onward the mechanical & electrical issues were resolved.

Also does the W211 provide a much better mileage compared to the W210 or is it very minor?

My focus is towards the E200 range simply because its more economical to maintain plus the insurance & road tax is way lower but i am keeping an open mind towards the other ranges as well just in case it as better offerings.

Hoping to get some good tips.

E200 and E250 is having the same engine what! So insurance and road tax is the same Mah! Whether it's economical or not , it depends on individual ma! Some like the horse to run but never give the horse grass to eat! Littat how? Bensi car all quite fuel efficient Liao! What do u mean by 'better mileage'?
*
Apologize for my ignorance but isnt the E250 for the W212 model onwards?

Based on what i have been researching the W211 E200 / 240 & 280 each have diff insurance and road tax prices as their engines are different. But please do correct me if i am wrong. Always happy to learn

As on economical i don't understand your analogy.. But what i do mean by it is in terms of maintenance. So hopefully we can talk in terms of numbers instead. Like for example basic service comparison. Maybe the W211 E200 may cost on average RM700 E240 RM1100 and E280 EM1500.. these are just examples.. i am genuinely not sure what the prices are.

As for better milage what i mean is in comparison to the W211. If W210 gives 8KM to every liter and W211 12 KM for every liter then its better. But if W211 gives 9KM for every liter then its only minor improvement. AGAIN these numbers are for illustration purposes only to explain the definition of better mileage

I hope to get a more positive and constructive feedback for other members here as well.

Thank you

My family had a W211 E240 japan spec back then, it comes with 2.6NA engine, not full performance, around 177hp. it great to drive on highway.

pro:
less thing to take care, ie kompressor, when it is a NA engine.
comes with harmon kardon speaker, great
ok performance
reliable, relatively ok vs bmw 525 E60. checking on various case at the workshop

cons:
fc kinda terrible if compared with japan 2.4 engine, average 9-10km/l
service fees, as average spending closed to 1k -1.3k per normal service.
SBC brake, mine is 2004 units, have to fork out money to change after those SBC alarm problem, end up selling this unit back then.
HID original headlamp is kinda poor light output vs others car with HID.personal experience

Thanks Ayamxxx for that input

btw..whats NA engine?

so i hope the 2007 build onwards would be better right? one of the reason why i rather get the year 2007 model onwards

NA stand for natural aspirated engine, non turbo.
believe latest w211 (not sure which year onwards) have replaced the SBC brake thingy to the conventional brake system. it is pricey to replace the so-called SBC module which is designed to be replaced after reached certain time/year.

anyway, best bang for money, would be taking up the W211 E230. it is a 2.5 Engine, with Valve timing (better fc), 201 hp, v6, non SBC brake, with comand aps with malaysia maps (sure outdated), 7 gear auto iinm. it was the last model for w211 and supposedly have made lots of improvement on any problem for earlier w211 e200, 240,280etc2

just a quick update on my search

So far ironically from the selection that i have looked at i am liking the E280 more then the E200.

(The E240 is currently out of budget range)

The E200 that i have seen sadly are not in nice condition. The ones that i did ok with i was surprisingly turned off by the power and engine sound..it was just feeling sluggish.

I have narrowed it down to a 2008 E200 apparently a UK spec model that has a push start button on the gear nob where the engine does sound much better. its downside is mostly features like it does not have default parking sensors (only has a after market one installed in the rear) the controls like radio and aircon are manual and the rear aircon too.

The E280 has everything.. its only downside is the insurance and road tax price.. so its a close call.

Did come across a possible hidden gem a 2008 S320 CDI. Price wise is just a tad more than the E280 at 71K. The diesel engine does not sound all that bad but when u start it you know its a diesel..

Is a diesel engine worth a consider?
