it's been sometime since i last used my mac to connect directly to my modem...since i have a router, i always connect to the internet via Airport using my router....

but my router went bonkers on me, and i have some important mails to send via Mail.

i remembered i used to plug in my modem directly to my macbook, then use PPPoE connection, keyin my login and password and everything is done...right??

now, when i plug it in, my network status is always "your cable is not plugged in"...and the indicator in system preference/network status is red.....i changed a few cables but the result is the same......

I have no problems connecting my mac to my router using cable...the indicator in system preference/network status is green

what have i done wrong?

lokgotz, if i were you, this is what i will do:
1) log-in to the modem setup page, do a backup of current setting.
1b) since you said your mac cannot detect the connection, it's best you try with another machine or reset it directly with the reset button. In any cases, you should be able to log-in directly to the setup page (in safari, put 192.168.1.1), no matter you connect to internet or not.

2) reset the modem to default.
3) setup the streamyx dial-up details.
4) enable DHCP server.
5) in your mac, go into the System Preferences > Network
makesure it's set to DHCP, PPPoE is unheck (off), no Proxies, Ethernet ID is automatic. Then click apply.
6) Restart your modem to see if the connection turn to orange. It should at lease tell you the network cable is connected and but it's not online.

hope this help, also do check if the cable needed to connect to WAN/LAN port when setting up the modem.

If you were to connect directly, why you need the bridge mode?

bridge mode = set the router to run only as modem(i think, that's what the shop people says)
so if i am not running DHCP, i'll need to run pppoe rite???

but my mac doesnt work with pppoe, only dhcp.....

my windows desktop works with both modes...

Didn't you mentioned earlier that your router is not working?

Well, in all condition, my modem in DHCP mode with auto-dialing works fine. Here's my setup:

Modem (DHCP server + Streamyx connected) ---> 8 ports hub ----> Macs & Wifi Router ----> Portable Macs

When i plugged into my faulty modem, my mac could detect the router...when plugged into modem (bridge mode) it doesnt work...only works in DHCP...

P.S. the Router is a bit faulty as it is overheating...when cooled down, it functions as normal....but will switch off by itself after a while...

my setup:
Works
Modem(Bridge Mode)-->Wireless Router(DHCP Server)-->Mac & PC

OR

Modem(DHCP Server)-->Mac OR PC
This setup can only connect one of my machines as i dont have a network switch/hub and my modem only has 1 miserable port

OR
Modem(Bridge Mode)-->PC
This doesn't work with Mac

Doesn't Work
Modem(Bridge Mode)-->Mac

So is it safe to say that my modem is not compatible with my mac?? if it's not, what is the problem??
