i want to learn hokkien, and help others who are interested here with some simple hokkien phrases...
no bad words or ill kick you...

here are some example words, please come teach :

1. Hello = Ooi
2. See you later = ai zao liao
3. Thank you. = gam sia
4. Im glad to hear that. = U iya bo ~
5. How Are you ? = lu ho bo ?
6. Have you eaten ? = jia ba bui
7. Eat well = Chia kah pa
8. Eat until fat = Chia kah pui (pui) (double for playful)
9. i invite you drink tea, ok or not ? = wa eh sai chia lu lim teh boh ? , quick version = chia lu lim teh, on bo?
10. sui char bo = pretty girl / lady
11. lau char bo = old lady

add more as we learn...

Oh, that's very interesting.

I'll share with you how my mother pronounce these word:
門 mui, 酸 sng (or xerng like you wrote)
楊 eo (or eeou), 羊 eo
豬 ti, 魚 hi
鞋 ei
去 khi (or ki), 氣 khi (or ki)

There are a few other word to test your dialect variance, like
飯、火、生、雞、瓜、光、間、月

4. I'm glad to hear that = wa jin hua hee tia "that" (my hokkien not fluence)

8. Eat until fat = jiak kah bui bui.
9. I invite you to drink tea, ok or not? = Wa chia lu lim teh, ho bo?

I born in pa sang but i speak penang hokkien

hokkien got tones like mandarin ah? if it does, it will be helpful to put the tone marks in the vowels.

My mum not penang lang but she speaks 漳州閩南, and we always say penang hokkien is a variance of 漳州閩南.

Last time I went to penang and order some food from hawker. The aunty asked me if I want some "hu", I was like wtf is "hu" but still I acted calm and said "okay la can can".
Later when she served the food, I looked into the bowl and realized penang hu = hi = hw (or "her" like you wrote). 魚 la.

7/8 tones.
Not easy to mark that liao.

lol i can't even imagine what the 6th, 7th and 8th tones sou d like. no way i'm gonna learn hokkien.

i'm self studying mandarin now. currently at my 2nd week. still struggling with the 4 tones.

i'm not chinese, but my family live among chinese, but seldom interact using chinese with them. we prefer to interact using our mother tongue (becos the chinese here also are good in our mother tongue)

learn that chinese have so many dialects. tried to learn some words, esp counting, but sometimes other chinese friends would say we are talking in other dialect. now got confused ardy. how to overcome this 'mild' phobia - dowan to put efforts learning the usual dialect here? our place here have a lot of hakka, hokkien, (and what they name as "keck" chinese (?) and very few foochow speakers. the foochow friends would speak in the 'local' chinese dialects here. my apology for not knowing much about chinese dialect and 'ethnic'.

Wrong fruit is tua liap leng. Not to be mistaken with cold. Which is also leng. lol. So be careful when you said you like the cold.

Any hokkien Lang here?

To all sifus reading this. Can you please enlighten me ways to study hokkien language ?

Cantonese and mandarin are my native language. I know very very little of hokkien words. In my working environment, everyone speaks hokkien. Hence, I am keen in learning Hokkien. I tried to listen vividly to what they say but I don’t understand the meaning of the words of hokkien.

I tried youtube-ing and google-ing to learn hokkien but there are very few resources available for me to master it. To those who have experienced before and managed to master it. Can u please give me some tips and advices ? Or u have any sites/blogs that can introduce to me ?
