Pilot dies in Myanmar military plane crash

user posted image

QUOTE
YANGON, Myanmar (AFP) – A Myanmar pilot died on Tuesday after a “technical failure” caused his military jet fighter to plummet into a paddy field in the center of the country, the army said.

A live video on Facebook showed flames billowing up from the crash site near Kyunkone village about an hour away from the capital Naypyidaw.

Local people found the unconscious body of the pilot attached to his parachute nearby and tried to drag him away from the scattered debris for medical help.

The army chief’s office later confirmed on its Facebook page that the crash was due to a “technical failure” and that the pilot died of his injuries on the way to a military hospital in nearby Taungoo town.

“An investigation is ongoing,” the post added.

Police told AFP that the single-seater F-7 jet fighter went down around 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning while a military source said the pilot, Major Arkar Win, was in his mid-30s.

A marine Corps helicopter crashed in Imperial County and the entire crew is presumed dead.

The CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter from the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing went down near El Centro around 2:35 p.m. on Tuesday during what officials called a routine training mission.

Four crew members are presumed dead pending positive identification, according to a statement emailed to The San Diego Union-Tribune by Marine spokeswoman Capt. Morgan Frazer in Miramar.

Authorities are probing the cause of the mishap. The names of the dead were withheld pending notification of their families, which typically takes about 24 hours.

Marine officials also are withholding the title of the crew’s squadron and the base from which it flew but promised more details in the coming hours.

The Naval Safety Center had recorded 23 air fatalities involving Navy and Marine Corps crews over the previous 12 months before Tuesday’s crash.

One dead in Italian navy helicopter crash

user posted image

QUOTE
An Italian Navy helicopter crashed in the Mediterranean during a night-time training exercise, killing one, the navy said on Friday.

Andrea Fazio, an experienced flight operator based in Catania, Sicily, died after the helicopter crashed into the sea and flipped onto its side as it prepared to land on a patrol boat, the navy said in a statement.

Divers rushed to pull Fazio from the chopper but were unable to revive him. The four other crew members aboard the helicopter escaped without major injuries.

The patrol boat was part of the "Mare Sicuro" (Secure Sea) navy operation in the central Mediterranean.

It was launched in March 2015 to protect oil rigs and fishing boats from ruthless Libyan militias, as well as to combat people trafficking.

The navy has also rescued thousands of migrants during its operations, either by taking them on board or by assisting other rescue ships.

Their onboard helicopters often carry out emergency medical evacuation operations.

Greek fighter jet crashes in sea after patrol, pilot killed

user posted image

QUOTE
ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A Greek air force fighter jet has crashed into the Aegean Sea after returning from a patrol, killing the pilot, Defense Ministry officials said.

The officials said the single-seat Mirage 2000-5 crashed Thursday north of the island of Skyros, in the central Aegean. They gave no information about the possible cause of the crash.

Patrolling has intensified in recent weeks amid a spike in tensions between Greece and Turkey and near-daily interceptions and mock dogfights in disputed airspace around Greek islands facing Turkey's coastline.

The pilot's death was announced by Defense Minister Panos Kammenos after Greek navy ships and army helicopters had taken part in the search for the pilot.

"A Greek pilot joins the pantheon of heroes. He fell in the defense of our national sovereignty and territorial integrity," Kammenos said in a message posted on Twitter.

F-22 Raptor Came To A Rest On Its Belly During Major Mishap Friday At NAS Fallon

user posted image

QUOTE
An F-22A Raptor belonging to Elmendorf Air Force Base's 3rd Wing was involved in a major mishap this weekend.

Details remain sketchy and are likely to change, but a source told The War Zone that the jet may have retracted its gear too early during takeoff, with the aircraft slamming back down on the runway at relatively high speed and skidding its way to a stop.

Thankfully the pilot was able to egress from the aircraft without major injuries.

We contact the public affairs office at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson who jumped right on the story and quickly confirmed that the aircraft had been involved in a mishap at Fallon and although the damage is extensive, it is hoped that it can be repaired at this time.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway.

The F-22 was at NAS Fallon to support the Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program, better known as Topgun, providing a dissimilar adversary for students to fight against as part of a class graduation exercise.

This is a widely known event in which Topgun students take part in a 1v1 fight against an unknown 'surprise' enemy aircraft.

Aircraft of all types, from warbirds to foreign fighters, have been brought in to take part in the exercise over the decades.

Blue Angels assessing damage to F/A-18 after 'bird strike' at Vero Beach air show

user posted image

QUOTE
The 2018 Vero Beach Air Show wrapped up performances Sunday, April 22, 2018 at the Vero Beach Regional Airport.

Patrons were treated to aerobatic skills from world-renowned pilots, static aircraft on the tarmac to tour and a final performance by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. PATRICK DOVE/TCPALM

Maintenance crews are assessing damage to the U.S. Navy Blue Angels' No. 5 jet after a bird flew into the aircraft's engine at a Vero Beach air show.

Lt. David Gardner, spokesman for the team, said Monday that accurate estimates of repair costs and down time for the jet won't be available until a thorough assessment is finished.

"Bird strikes are fairly common, and our pilots, and all naval aviators, are trained to deal with any number of contingencies that could occur during flight, including bird strikes," Gardner said in response to emailed questiones.

Catherine Caddell, director of marketing for the Vero Beach show, said previously that the bird caused an estimated $1 million in damage to the F/A-18 Hornet's engine.

The incident happened Saturday when lead solo pilot Lt. Tyler Davies was taking part in the team's demonstration.
