Official: Lightning strike prompted military plane's emergency landing QUOTE A lightning strike over Chicago prompted an in-flight emergency aboard a military plane on Wednesday afternoon, prompting emergency vehicles to surround the aircraft after it made a smokey landing at Milwaukee's Mitchell International Airport, officials said.
A WISN 12 NEWS photographer who was on scene said he heard "multiple explosions" as the KC-135 aircraft came in for a landing.
Two tires that were blown during the landing needed to be replaced on the runway before the plane could be moved to the Wisconsin Air National Guard's 128th Air Refueling Wing.
No one was injured.
The work temporarily closed the airport to inbound and outbound flights. The airport reopened just after 4 p.m.

U.S. F-15 fighter jet crashes into sea off Japan's Okinawa QUOTE TOKYO (Reuters) - A U.S. military F15 fighter jet crashed in waters off Japan’s southern island of Okinawa, where the bulk of U.S. forces in Japan are based, during a routine training mission on Monday, U.S. Forces Japan said in a statement.
The pilot, the only person in the aircraft, ejected successfully and was recovered by search and rescue crews, the statement said. A board of officers would investigate the incident, it said.
Many residents of Okinawa associate the U.S. military bases with crime, accidents and pollution and want them moved off the island. A series of emergency landings and parts falling from U.S. military aircraft have highlighted safety concerns.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s government is moving ahead with a contentious plan to relocate the U.S. Marines’ Futenma airbase from an urban area in central Okinawa to the less populated Henoko district of Nago city in the island’s north. [sos]

The Marine Corps has lost its first F-35 QUOTE An F-35B that erupted into flames caused by a faulty bracket nearly two years ago has been struck by the Marine Corps, making it the first loss of an F-35 for the Corps.
The Corps made the determination that the costs to repair the costly high-tech fighter would not be worth the return on investment.
However, the Marines have not put out an official strike message for the F-35B because the Corps has not decided whether the aircraft will be used as a trainer for maintenance or a museum centerpiece.
“With the specific F-35B involved in this discussion, the Marine Corps’ cost-benefit analysis determined the repair costs would not yield a sufficient ROI [return on investment] to justify the expenses,” Capt. Christopher Harrison, a Marine spokesman, told Marine Corps Times. “The decision was made to strike the F-35B; however, there has not yet been a strike message as the disposition decision has not yet been made.”
On Oct. 27, 2016, a fire broke out mid-air on F-35B forcing the pilot to land at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina. [sos]
