Looking for a new 65" TV.... been surveying different brands / models but end up getting more confusing with their model and other mumbo jumbo details rclxub.gif

For TVs of this size it seems there are "cheap" versions of RM4k+, then the higher end ones (such as LG's new 65SJ850T with the Nano cell thingy) that goes up to 10k+, and finally the OLED ones which are out budget.

Can sifus here recommend me / help me narrow down on models to consider? From most to least frequent, the TV will be used for:

1) Movies
2) PS3 & PS4
3) Youtube, Netflix (LG is the clear winner here since I like their interface and the magic remote)
4) Normal TV (astro, etc) - don't really watch a lot. Mostly I just binge on whatever series I want selectively and these are usually via Netflix or downloaded.

If you noticed, I seem to be biased towards LG- I've only owned a LG 42" up till now, and I've been pretty satisfied with it (love the 100Hz picture smoothening thing "Motionflow" eventhough some says it makes the show looks "fake" due to the smoothness)

I have no experience with other brands and standing in the shop side by side, after 10 mins everything starts to look the same rclxub.gif however, I don't like Sharp, Toshiba and Phillips. Not sure what reason, just don't like tongue.gif

Budgetary-wise I hope to get one under RM10k. Most of the "cheap" versions (RM4k+) seems to get pretty horrible reviews online but I don't know how bad they will be in real life setting.

There's also an OLED version going for around RM12k in one of the shops (display set) - LG E6 if I recall. Not sure if worth it.

Thanks, the 65SJ850T is exactly what I bought, I placed my order last Thursday. I bought the +2 years warranty too. Total 4 years warranty. Is it worth it? Paid another 900 extra.

Didn't get the the Samsung recommended above because I couldn't find any display unit in a few shops I went to.

Just saw this at 11street meet your price target and 65" http://www.11street.my/productdetail/lg-65...-ultra-12991083 with dobly vision, HDR and supposed to be QLED type technology
*
WTF, when you linked this is was 8.8k or something? Today it's 8,280.

I contacted the store (TBC Elektrik) from one of the 11street links. They had listed the price last week around 9.2k. They offered me 8.7k straight, no nego at all. I bought it from them.

Today your link shows 8,280 blink.gif

Something wrong with this TV model?

Thanks guys, you are right, I got a free sound bar together. The new price probably doesn't have sound bar bundled in. TBH, I don't need the sound bar and would have preferred the lower price :-/

Yeah, review usually LG doesn't get really outstanding score except for OLED. But I don't want to think already, the TV already arrive -.-

Will not be able to use it until A few days later, still sitting in the box. Haven't buy mount yet.

I'm the TS originally asking for recommendation for the TV. I ended up getting the LG 65SJ850T (http://www.lg.com/my/tvs/lg-65SJ850T)

Since purchasing it last year around October till now, I've had the panel replaced once due to vertical line appearing while watching the TV (usually around 1-2 hours in)

After replacement, the same problem has started appearing again.

I'm not sure if I got a lemon unit or this model is defective, anyway it's so heartbreaking to see my almost brand new TV like this T.T

I've also found out the line goes away if I apply gentle pressure at the bottom edge where it appears. Just a gentle press and it goes away.

Waiting for LG to come again for the 2nd round. In the meantime, any idea on why this is happening / how to fix this?

Attached Image

EDIT: Can't rotate picture, keeps uploading sideways sweat.gif

FWIW, I think the local dimming feature advertised for this model is not worth it. The picture quality is nice, but the local dimming usually results in patchy white spots all over as the TV tries to "switch off" all the dark areas so that it appears blacker.

Funny question but need to ask anyway. Do you keep your 65" TV brown box? My Sony 65" is now close to 3 years but still afraid if it encounters any problem and requires repair or unforseen relocation/moving to a new house in the future where the box is needed for safe transportation?

The box is so big, sometime I feel like throwing it away but surrounded by dilemma stated above.
*
Box disposed off on the day of delivery itself by the deliverymen. Over the course of +-1 yr since there has been warranty claims, they come right up to your doorstep.

The box may be useful if you plan to relocate though, especially if it's a big TV and you are hiring 3rd party services.

That being said, the more premium relocation services should be able to take care of fragile / sensitive equipment for you.

I’m so confused to get a qled or splurge on an oled tv. Oled is so expensive. Tbh uHD led and normal led got much difference ma. Noob here
*
I am using LG so called Nano Cell technology (65SJ850T I think?), it tries to simulate deep blacks by having local dimming. In my opinion, it's not nice. Anytime there's a picture on the screen, the LED will light up the entire vertical bar above and below it and it's distracting esp in dark scenes.

Example, subtitle appear on a dark scene, the entire middle part of the screen lights up vertically and ruins the dark scene.

I'm not sure if other brands / QLED are using the same method.

I think you can get OLED at a reasonable size below RM10k now.

I spent RM8.5k on my TV.

The Nano Cell is LG's proprietary IPS TV with wide color gamut .
But I am sorry to say this  but LG 's IPS TV are pretty much not worth it . They have a rather awkward position in the market now , as many of them are edge-lit based hence the local dimming is pretty much not effective yet the price tags of these higher end TV make it very difficult to justify their purchases.
To be fair , LG have also released a couple of Full-Array local dimming IPS TV this year like the UK8500 & 9500 , but it is still in the experimental stage and no where as good as the high end LCD TVs from Samsung and Sony. It is hard to recommend them as the price is high and not nearly having the same level of picture quality of their OLED lineups.

Agree... Mind you, it's not like there's any problem with the TV or anything. It's still perfectly OK for your daily usage and the occasional movie but I feel there are other options at this kind of price

Is there a term for this?

Let's say the scene is a bright sky (or just total white even), and the camera pans around. Can see noticeably some parts are "gray-ish" as if there is a layer of dirt on the screen (this is the best I can describe), making some areas on the screen seem darker than the rest on the same scene but only when the camera pans around.

Hoping it's normal and not indication of any defect (my TV - LG 65SJ850T)

I believe that is compression / decoding artifacts. So it looks like a bit boxy type, like those VCD feel.

Should not be TV problem.

I see, TQ for the info. Weird to still see this kind of thing on Netflix, kononnya 4K streaming lol.gif

Bought an LG 65SM9100 Nanocell TV. I know it is after the fact, but would like to hear everyone comment. Purchase at rm5999. My thought process, full array led, local dimming, dolby atmos, webos which others claim is fast and intuitive.
*
I am using one with local dimming as well and not a fan of it. Next time, I will save up and get a proper OLED TV.

I like the WebOS though. Very easy to use, supports Spotify, Youtube, etc the basic stuff that I need.

EDIT: Mine is 65SJ850T I believe. Bought it for RM9+k about 2+ years ago.

My LG 65SJ850T developed horizontal lines from top to bottom of the screen. Based on the extended warranty, I will not get one to one replacement but a cash value to be determined by the insurance company.

Been 4 years since I got this TV, shame its lifespan is not longer lol. I'm not sure how much cash I will get back. I got this TV back in 2017 for around 8.5k - 9k, don't remember exactly.

Any recommendation for a good similar replacement in today's model? I like the "smooth" trumotion that LG tvs usually offer.

Although, I dislike the "local dimming" feature in this TV and never used it.

Quick follow up on this, I have been given a choice of either (i) RM4,200 worth for a replacement TV of my choice, or (ii) repair the TV.

Based on my current TV (65SJ850T) which would be a better choice? I notice the ones in the RM3-4k range all have relatively thick bezels and the TV is also quite thick, relative to mine which is almost bezel-less.

Appreciate any advice here as I begin my research... so much changed in the past 3-4 years, lots to catch up on, hopefully will arrive at the best decision.

I would choose repair. RM4200 can hardly buy anything good since lately TV prices also increase as with other goods. That's the problem with insurance, the same amount of money can buy less in the future.
*
Just went to some TV stores to have a quick browse, and yeah... the RM4k+ ones does not look quite appealing to me. The closest I found seems to be Sony X90J (around 5k+ or was it 6k+) but this model is not available for replacement it seems. The QLEDs and Nanocells are all in the >RM8k category for 65".

Might just opt for a repair (panel replacement) then... unless there are alternatives in the RM5k+ range?

The good thing about taking a new TV is the 2 yr warranty that comes with it though. Can also top up extended warranty just like any new purchase.

Shame, my old 42" LG LCD Thicc Boi has been serving me well for over 10 years now. It makes strange whirring noises but the picture is still flawless.

What about Sony X85J. This model performs as well as the X90J but lacks the local dimming function. In the official Sony store can get it for about RM4.9k but can be cheaper in some other places.

Unfortunately, the shop I bought my TV doesn't carry Sony. I wanted to take the X90J initially, since it got good reviews on Rtings and also pretty good feedback here.
