Kings choose Theus as next coach
QUOTE
Reggie Theus' mercurial rise through the coaching ranks has propelled him all the way back to the Sacramento Kings.

The Kings reached an agreement in principle Tuesday with Theus to become their new coach, ending a meandering two-month search for Eric Musselman's replacement.

Kings spokesman Troy Hanson said the club plans to introduce Theus, the New Mexico State coach and a former Kings player who twice led the team in scoring, at a news conference Wednesday.

Yet Theus, a 13-year NBA veteran, has almost as much experience playing a coach as an actor on the Saturday-morning kids' show "Hang Time" as in real life.

He transformed the New Mexico State program into an NCAA tournament club in just two seasons, but has never coached in the NBA -- and didn't even get serious about a coaching career until 2003 as an assistant to Rick Pitino at Louisville.

Kevin Durant works out for Blazers
Kevin Durant worked out with the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday, two days after Greg Oden, as both players show their talents to the team with the top draft pick.

Durant, a 6-foot-9 forward out of Texas, was The Associated Press Player of the Year this past season as a freshman.

"I feel good here," he said. "Like I belong here."

As with Oden, several dozen fans stood at the Blazers' practice facility south of Portland, hoping for an autograph. Local journalists came out in droves.

"That was as impressive a workout as any I've seen in here," Blazers general manager Kevin Pritchard said.

The Big 12 player and freshman of the year, Durant averaged 25.8 points and 11.1 rebounds -- one of three players in the country to average more than 20 points and 10 rebounds.

He shot 47 percent from the field, 40 percent from 3-point range and 82 percent from the foul line. He led the Longhorns in steals and blocked shots and scored at least 30 points a Big 12-record 11 times.

Texas, which started four freshmen, finished third in the Big 12 and went to the second round of the NCAA tournament, losing to Southern California. The Longhorns finished 25-10.

During his workout, Durant went through defensive drills, took shots from 3-point range and dunked.

"There's not many things he can't do," Blazers coach Nate McMillan said. "He is a basketball player, and he showed that today."

The Blazers will likely choose between Oden and Durant when the NBA draft is held June 28 in New York. Seattle has the No. 2 pick, meaning both players could land in the Pacific Northwest.

Paxson: Deal for Bryant unlikely
Although Kobe Bryant apparently would like to join the Bulls, Chicago general manager John Paxson sent a message to the Los Angeles Lakers' superstar on Monday: Don't count on it.

Paxson said he has had no discussions with the Lakers and a deal would be difficult to complete.

"What we would have to give up -- unless that franchise would ever have a change of heart and had to do something -- I don't know how that would work," he said. "They've got one of the top, maybe the top, talents in the league. What we would have to do to get there, I don't even know what it would be. It would be significant. And then, are we better?"

Bryant has waffled this offseason, saying he wants to be dealt and then rescinding those comments. Although he has a no-trade clause, The Riverside (Calif.) Press-Enterprise reported the Bulls are on his three-team wish list.

Paxson is reluctant to gut a young, but experienced, team that has made three straight playoff appearances and reached the second round for the first time since 1998.

"There's nothing going on -- that's just the reality of it," Paxson said.

Pistons G Billups becomes free agent
Detroit Pistons point guard Chauncey Billups has opted out of the final year of his six-year contract, making him an unrestricted free agent heading into the summer signing season.

"He informed the team this morning that he was opting out of his final year with the Pistons and that makes him a free agent -- which we expected," team spokesman Matt Dobek said Monday.

The 6-foot-3, 202-pound All-Star has said he would prefer to stay with Detroit and expects to be back if the team can match the best deal he can find from another team.

Joe Dumars, the Pistons' president of basketball operations, said shortly after the team was eliminated from the Eastern Conference finals by the Cleveland Cavaliers that his top priority was re-signing Billups when he became a free agent.

"We certainly hope we will be" able to re-sign him, Dobek said.

The 30-year-old Billups, who played with the Celtics, Denver, Orlando and Minnesota in his first four seasons, was named the NBA finals MVP in 2004 when Detroit won the championship and was an All-Star in each of the next two seasons.

He averaged 17 points and 7.2 assists in 70 games last season, and has averaged 14.5 points and 5.3 assists over his nine-year career. His six-year deal with Detroit was worth $35 million.

Trail Blazers go for Oden with No. 1 pick
The Portland Trail Blazers settled months of debate Thursday night when they chose Oden over fellow freshman Kevin Durant with the No. 1 pick in a highly anticipated NBA draft.

Portland opted for the 7-footer who can dominate a game with his defense over the sensational scoring of Durant, who would have been the No. 1 pick in many other years after one of the most outstanding freshman seasons in NCAA history.

But franchise centers are hard to find, and most believe the Blazers got one.
