im planning to get my first electric guitar . I listen to my chemical romance , rooster , led zep and rozorlight ( they all use LP ) and i want to get thier tone and sound .

harmony is selling epip lp std for 2060 without case but they dont have ebony so they can order for me from swee lee but he wont give me any discount and my dad doesnt want to pay so much for a china made guitar... he wants me to get godin ( which i dont like )

can any pro like help me out and bargain ?

cuz paying 2060 for an MIC with no case is not worth the money at all.
no point being hasty to buy a guitar that has the looks but plays/sounds like its not justified by its price. you want good? order from ishibashi
a burny lespaul will set you back bout 1.4k for the guitar alone with superior quality compared to epiphones MIK and MIC

how bout squier strat with a good amp ? can i change those single coil to humbuckers ?

IMHO, i would suggest amp =)
It really does makes a big difference

your dad doesnt want to buy a MIC LP.
he also doesnt want to buy a used MIK LP.

you of cos dont want anything other than a LP, and are trying real hard to justify getting a different guitar.

stop giving yourself headaches, just go be a singer.

obviously good guitar...

now or days we have roland micro cube and all..its cheap and i think the sound quality is OK ..

and with a lousy amp ...save up for a good pedal lar ..

good amp + bad guitar < good guitar , good pickups , red shadow amp + sans amp GT-2..

you can perform live with a better tone sumore

+ for me , i tend to judge guitars first when i see a live band..i always get the impression of "the amp doesn't belong to him" thingy

some pros dont even use an amp anymore.
they just feed thru the PA and use something like a tonelabs SE.

so yea, good guitar first.

i have been owning sh*tty amps my whole life ...marshall mg 50 , roland cube 30 , laney TF , laney HCM 65 , charvel ...

and i think i am still doing fine with sans amp , podxt live , me50,zoom hyper lead , tri metal etc..

may i suggest you get an Ibanez SZ series ?

i can get a brand new old stock ibanez SZ520 MIK, the one with the much better looking flame inlay, for about RM1600.

but back to reality on good guitar vs amp.

1. you will never be a rockstar.
so dont bother having 3 full stacks in your house just collecting dust.
and how many ppl do you know who bring their own amps to gigs? hardly any.
even for pros, most of them just rent amps for shows.

and session work? again how many? yea, hardly any.
basically you're better off with a good practice amp.

then again, at gigs you sometimes see one band borrowing guitars from another band.
either cos their guitar is shitty and broke down, or too embarassed to bring it along.
perhaps those are the guys with 3 full stacks in their house collecting dust.
if only they had a reality check on 1.

Get a good guitar ..... and a Roland Micro Cube

Seriously, it's an awesome practice amp.... and don't let the size fool you.... it's loud!

IMO, what you guys said are quite true at least for an intermediate player and above, but for a begginner i would say amp =)

Vox ADVT series should be a good beginner amp, with the different amp modeling he should be able to try out which amp tones he prefers. Also judging from most of his posts, he doesnt even know whether he wants a strat type or les paul type.

Assuming that he gets a cheap squier and a vox advt series, if he decides he doesnt like strat type body and sound, he could always buy a new guitar and keep the amp.

But if he puts all his money on a good guitar and a shitty amp, he may loose some versatility in tones that he may like. Furthermore he isnt sure whether he likes that guitar to begin with.

Sure pedals and eq-ing can help turn a shitty amp into an OK amp, but from a beginers point of view, they just dont have enough experience to do it and may be a discouraging factor

But a good guitar can encourage/motivate a beginner to practise more rather than a lousy guitar. Bad playability or inability to stay in tune can really contribute to a beginner giving up!

And even if he gets a good guitar, example say the SZ that Everdying recommended, he can still afford a Roland Microcube easily.

IMO..get average guitar 1st and a small parctice amp..

lousy guitar + good amp = best amplification of the worst sound (instant turn off)

lousy guitar + lousy amp = why bother? sound so sh*tty that you'd prob give up being a musician forever...

good guitar + lousy amp = decent sound that you know could sound better with prop equip

good guitar + good amp = heaven (or hell for your neghbours)


sorry mate but the guitar is the foundation. pretty much like a good engine. If your main engine (guitar) sucks..no amount of frills or amplification is gonna make it work.

When i started playing bass i didnt even have an amp...i just used my old beat up mini-compo...

How about average guitar + average amp???

Like say, a Pacifica with a Microcube?

I too started off with a mini compo as amp =)
When i get an average or half decent amp, i could add pedals and stuff to make my practice more interesting, hence i suggested a decent amp first instead of like me getting a decent guitar and lousy mini compo =)
Also with the ADVT series he could get some different sound without adding pedals.

In the end i guess getting an average guitar + average amp like blactrix suggested is the way to go =)

Just get a Roland Microcube..possibly rm380-400 and a decent guitar like an Ibanez RG series or if your budget's higher get a MIM Fender Standard Strat

Stefanong's got a good point... the guitar is the foundation of your playing.

An amp with lousy tone is not fun to play with, but a guitar with lousy playability is even worse - especially when you're just starting out.

Hey, we all b!tch about our tone (or lack thereof) and think (at least for me... ) that a better sounding amp will make us sound better. Let's get real, an amp is not going to improve your chops/touch/technique/feel etc.

A guitar with good playability can help you improve your playing by generally making it easier for you to play. Some plywood knockoff guitar with a neck thicker than a baseball bat can make your life hell - and when you're starting out, you're life is already hell! No joke... we've all been there!

Go for a microcube (decent tone, decent price) and a guitar that's easy to play... the sub-2k Ibanez guitars are a good example of decent priced guitars with good playability. It's not an LP, and it won't sound like an LP... but at least you get humbuckers and a semi-kick@ss neck that will make your first few months of playing bearable, and the next year or so a dream...!

Ok lah, I gotta admit there's a distinct anti-LP, anti-tone-snob, pro-ibanez, pro-roland bias in the above post...

Plz go into all music stores, look for those within ur price list, check the specs and ask again... Try all guitars that u LIKED first before asking more questions...

U can BEGIN by going to WOH FATT first.. if u are satisfied with the Sx, then just go for it... if u arent.. move on to a higher budget guitar... There, this will get u started on ur quest for the virgin guitar...

Plz, no more question about which guitar vs which guitar... there is no absolute answer...

well i guess i have to agree with you. . . go for a good / decent guitar and stick with a cheap Prince amp or something. . . get your chops up and while you're at it save up for a decent amp. . . =)

a good guitar gives motivation and better fell to players. . . try Ibanez. . . they have a wide range of selection. . . get something around your budget. . . you can still use your mini compo and power your ibz. . . =)

man... i guess daddy wins.... i'll check out ibanez if not ill go for my very first choice... godin sd with roland 20x ( rm2500 with 3 month free lessons ) which my dad supports

get a yamaha pacifica.. itz a good starter guitar.. seriously i can tell u... i've played guitar for 5 years and yamaha pacifica iz one of the best guitar i've used and datz my main guitar for gigs.... my pacifica iz 120sj built in 2 humbuckers... =)
