What is your opinion on 860 Evo against the MX500 based SATA SSD? At first, I was torn between these two SSDs, but eventually went with the Samsung's.

Hello everyone, which SSD brand is the best?

Looking for 1TB SSD to replace to 1TB HDD. Using Windows 10 and use for working purpose.
Currently looking at WD Blue 3D NAND, Crucial MX500, Kingston A400 and Silicon Power.

Samsung EVO SSD 860 is the way above my budget.

Thanks.

Crucial MX500 gets my vote. Currently using one's 1Tb in my lappy biggrin.gif

Oh thanks...

Out of 1TB, what's the available space?
How's the bootup time?
No 100% disk?

You clone from HDD to SSD or fresh install Windows?
How long have you been using it?

Thanks.

Considering its a laptop bought in 2014 running windows 8.1, dont expect the crazy fast boot time but it is faster than any HDD given the same specs and same windows environment. Counted for 15sec the moment i pressed the power button until my desktop icon page appeared. Bought and replaced it around jan 2019. Still running strong until today

Oh thanks for the information.

About the Free Available Space out of the box and the installation.
You clone/migrate OS or Fresh Install to this SSD?

Thanks.

Sorry for answering too fast. I think its 930GB like most HDD out of the box for fresh Win install. I clone my 250GB 840 Evo to this new SSD using external sata plug. I use the Macrium Reflect free software) to do the cloning. It goes all well since the license is embedded within the laptop system (mobo). It does not give any error luckily. I guess my clone is a successful one. smile.gif

It's OK bro.

Even cloning also improves the speed.
I heard about Macrium Reflect.
First time I heard the Windows license is embedded to motherboard instead of HDD/SSD.

Existing laptop using 1TB HDD. Wish to get 500GB SSD.
But cloning/migrating is one of the major problems.
Some of them give different answers.
Said cannot and said can.
Very headache to change to smaller or bigger.
Only used up 82GB out of 1TB.

Can do fresh install but need to reinstall everything.

What do you think?

Thanks.

Just did googling. "The key for the version of Windows the PC comes with is stored in the computer's UEFI firmware or BIOS. You don't even need to know it–assuming you're installing the same edition of Windows the PC came with, it should automatically activate and work without you needing to enter a key." Its stored in your laptop's bios. I replaced the HDD right after I buy my laptop in 2014. Its been running that fast upon buying the laptop with 8gb ddr3 ram. That time SSD is expensive that not every laptop has. When I see people's laptop getting slower due to HDD performing poorer, I am glad that I made the switch the moment I bought the laptop. Its just tat 250gb ssd is not enuf for further storage considering i had used the laptop for 6 years now. I did myself. Replaced myself DIY myself. It is so easy. If your laptop has m2 slot, even better. Plug the m2 then clone from ur HDD. Samsung data migration is good for samsung ssd/nvme. You can do fresh install to prevent any file missing or eliminate error or compatibility issue. I did that also for the sake of trying clone for the first time and it worked fine. I still keep the 250GB SSD with the original windows files data all intact. I did not format it so I still have some old essential backup and ensure my windows 8.1 will not bump into issue.

Worn out HDD is like that. Signs of it dying. Better make a backup on important files first and then replace it with SSD before it kaput.

Yeah, agree. May do a backup of important data to an external drive.
