So much poison... I am also debating between getting

Crucial MX500 1TB for RM721
https://www.lazada.com.my/products/crucial-...s617148716.html

or

Samsung 960 EVO NVMe M.2 500GB for RM790
https://www.lazada.com.my/products/samsung-...s638123853.html

I don't mind Crucial MX500's 500MB/s, 1GB DRAM and 1TB capacity, but tempted by the 960 Evo's 3200mb/s read speed (but description page was for Western D??)

Placed order for 860 EVO 1TB from Amazon with expedited delivery. Still RM 70+ cheaper than Crucial MX500 1TB from lazada...

Keeping fingers crossed, should get it in 2 weeks. I suppose Samsung has international warranty, and Samsung service centre is not far from my house (of course, hoping that I never need to visit them)

For performance definitely go for m.2, it make no sense to got Crucial; MX500 as its bottlencked by SATA interface, unless your mobo is too old to use nvme.
*
I undrestand that. Just asking myself if that much speed is worth getting. It is like buying a sports car vs buying two luxury sedans. With 1TB, installing everything on the same disk makes a ton of sense, while having 250 GB NVMe means I need second drive for apps and storage.

better to buy Crucial MX500 1TB at viewnet, only RM659 as per their latest pricelist
when I bought it around last week or so it was RM699
still cheaper than lazada
*
Agreed. Only problem is that I am not from KL. Thus shipping fees apply. It is ok. I bought from Amazon.

RM 699 for 1TB but free shipping... Hmm...

Why you should not get cheap SSD, unless you only use it for light usage, or it's really dirt cheap.

TL;DR version, DRAM less SSD has terrible performance, and potentially has lesser TWB/endurancethan normal SSD with DRAM cache.
*
"For most of us enthusiasts, we shouldn’t even consider DRAMless SSDs with planar NAND. It's true that the drives are faster than a hard disk drive, but when you lean on them with a slightly elevated workload, they can stall, stutter, and deliver a worse user experience than you would get with a spinning mechanical disk... 3D NAND will provide enough performance and endurance to transform DRAMless SSDs into a viable category"

Update on Amazon order... reached Singapore this morning. I guess it would still have to get to KL before coming to Kuching. Fair progress.

At that time, will replace my OS drive for gaming rig.

Samsung 850 EVO 500GB

Age: 2 years 5 months, third owner
Specs indicated 150 TBW

I have been using it almost a year.
I think it will last me another 3-5 years.

definitely it has something to do with me spending more time in vms most of the times. (when i screwed up, i just restore vms from backups)
it's more than that if you're talking about tbw.

for normal usage, mainstream drives usually outlives our machines by many years.
*
Agreed. After 5 years, I could plan to upgrade and use it for other purposes. Partly because I want to feel more secure that it wont fail with my important data on it, as I am using it in my working laptop now.

Cheap doesnt mean it is good.

Corsair Force 60GB, I think. Still using, as a matter of fact.

Was browsing Lazada and was tempted by the Kingston/Adata SSDs 240GB only cost about RM100+. Then saw the 480GB SSDs going for around RM250. Damn cheap. But after reading this thread, decided to go with either Crucial MX500 OR Samsung 860 Evo.

In the end bought 250GB Samsung 860 Evo. Nice upgrade over my old Intel 160GB I bought back in 2011(Cost a fortune too, but hands down best piece of hardware I ever bought back then) Prolong my E8400 until last year.

Now wait a bit more buy 1TB cheap SSDs to store stuff and retire my Harddisks.
*
SSD as a long term storage media is a bit ill-advised, due to capacity per ringgit.

Not only that, if you fill up the SSD with files that you never move away, then the rest will have more usage and less durability.

Eg for 500Gb SSD:

ssd a) with 200GB used for fixed files, 300GB free for write and rewrite
ssd b) with 400GB used for fixed files, 100GB free for write and rewrite

SSD b will have higher stress on the 100GB that has to cope with various operations, and shorter life.

Larger SSD lives longer, but also cost more $$$

That is why recommendations for 256GB+ for OS and most other installations on fast HDD, for better cost efficiency and still decent performance.

I don't understand the stress.
What if

Eg for 500Gb SSD:

ssd a) with 200GB used for fixed files, 300GB free for write
ssd b) with 300GB used for fixed files, 100GB free for write and rewrite and 100gb not partition

Which is more stress ?
*
ssd b... especially the part with the 100GB repeatedly write and rewrite

does it work that way? the not partitioning  100gb part
*
As I understand it... The memory chips have a finite number of rewrites. So the more free space you have that is allocated for read/write, the longer your SSD will last.

It is like having some shelf space... If you have 100 shelves that can last 100 million times putting things in it and taking things off from it... And 50 shelves are having stuff that are just left there to gather stuff, the remaining 50 shelves would be constantly rotated in its use and will break faster than the ones that have fixed files...

Now imagine if you have 50 shelves of fixed stuff, 20 shelves marked "do not use" and left with 30 shelves to take up all the read/write processes... What happens to the 30? Remember that deleting also means writing to the space, to mark it as unused or available.

Is this brand good enough?
*
The DRAM is quite small... around 32MB for a 480GB, I think. But better than none? It's cheap for sure, but your mileage will vary in terms of performance as OS drive.

My criteria is durability. Don't want ssd that kaput within a year like my Kingston a400

I have used patriot 480GB for OS drive for an older system, so far no issues in 2 years. Bought another 960GB for game storage

What make ssd to kaput easily?
Is it because of dramless?

My a400 breakdown twice in 2years end up I go for sshd for my pc
*
Smaller SSD have shorter durability due to repeated read and write (or program/erase... PE cycles). So recommended to get 480GB or larger

Hi, I am having Asus H110m-K motherboard. I am looking to upgrade my SSD. I am a casual gamer with mostly play dota 2 and some graphics game like horizon or wasteland 3.
But i have few options

1. SATA SSD or Nvme?
2. If my motherboard not allow for nvme, what can i do so it can support nvme in mean time? before i upgrade to better motherboard.
3. And last which brand or which nand ssd i should buy?

my budget around Rm 300. and i looking 512gb ssd

tq
*
Consider Samsung 860 Evo 500 GB SATA SSD when on offer (usually can expect RM 330-350). 5 years warranty and you can bring it over to another build next time.
Otherwise Cruxial MX500 SATA SSD seems to be available at RM 250-280 for the same capacity online.

You should buy during 1111.

user posted image

Bought a couple ssd during last few weeks.

500gb evo 860 RM237
250gb evo 860 RM 142
240gb A400 for office slow pc

I used to run a 120gb Transcend ssd370 which also had dram but somehow the Evo860 is just that much faster. Can feel it's zippyness. I always thought Samsung SSD is over rated... Btw, it's an old i5 3470 pc... No nvme.
*
It's not over rated biggrin.gif

Congrats on good deal! If you want something faster then PCIE SSDs

want to buy my 1st SSD, and I have 2 options/plan.

Option 1:
Straight away buy SATA SSD (due to my mobo doesn't have m.2 slot)

Option 2:
Buy M.2 to sata enclosure + M.2 SSD

Which option is more advisable?
*
Option 1... Option 2 is still bottlenecked by your SATA transfer speeds and you are likely not getting your money's worth from your M.2 SSD.

Option 3: try PCIE SSDs?
