I'm starting to dislike the fact that LS is going on a reference-fest.

There's only so much I can take before it becomes not funny at all.

If I want great references, Komugi's is better. Anyway, the Timotei reference is a hit or miss affair. Great for those who remember the ad but for those who didn't (or never seen it before), it will be like wtf? That is the risk from adding in too many references and end up alienating some of the viewers. Some references already had me going "Huh? never watched this anime before".

Even like Hayate no Gotoku, some references are rather obscure to me since I am not familiar with the referred series (especially that one DBZ reference about having two more transformation which I was totally clueless about till I read ANN's HnG trivia page).

A pity that 17-year old Konata is breastless.

I will have to disagree about the "find out for yourself" part. I believe LS to be quite explicit with their referencing but relies on the viewer being aware on which anime is being referred to. So it's an "either you have watched this anime or you haven't" thing. Even if it wasn't obvious, I doubt it will be funny for the uninformed (even when they find out since they aren't familiar with the reference material in the first place).

If the reference is visual, viewers are able to at least connect to the referred anime but if it is a verbal description (like the FMP Fumoffu description or something more subtle) then it is a problem. The (few) funny parts seem to come from scenes devoid of references and not through the references (except the Initial D scene).

Yes, I am aware of it being targeted at the Japanese audience especially the otakus but I wonder if too much of referencing is a bad thing. In the end, I can only see LS as a mild humor anime pandering to the "Ooh...I know this anime and that anime. Let's see if I can identify every single reference in this episode" desires of the Japanese otaku and a hardore one at that (probably the one and only main target audience which the producers have in mind when they made this) with the funniness and hype being over-rated.

The 4-koma might be focusing about life, but I believe that KyoAni turned it into an Otaku Quiz Game. I have had my share of slice-of-life animes but it seems slice-of-life is taking a backseat here. It's more as an excuse to slip in all those references.

And I doubt the manga was a Otaku Quiz Game by itself.
