Thinking to buy a folding bike very very soon...
Eye-ing on some model slightly towards long journey cycling, maybe like 10km to 20km...

TRS Victor(Cheapest + Better Shifter Den Fit? Maybe other component?)
Java Fit(Branded,Average Specs)
Java Pro 3(Slightly Better Specs Den Fit?)
Java IRA(Carbon Body, but Not Reali Matter? Better Wheel Bearing? Worth d price?)

Need some advice, and see which is d better buy for d money...

I assume your budget is around 2k since youre considering java ira which priced around 2.1k.
Just fyi, java ira frame is chromoly the fork is carbon.correct me if im mistaken.
Just giving more options according to your budget

Dahon speed falco chromoly ,2k
-needless to say, anyone into folding bike surely now this brand
-451 wheelset

Fnhon blast alu, start from 1.5k
-growing brand in Malaysia folding bike community
-highly customizable and endless racun

Tern link C8 alu, 2k
- average spec
- but most polished folding bike i ever ride.stiff frame and handle.neat and smooth folding mechanism.
*
Thx for d advice bro...
I think i will skip d good folding mechanism thing...

Fnhon blast like not bad,but where to find @ 1.5k?
I see d specs with all entry mid-level parts is about rm2000++...

Someone mentioned Victor? biggrin.gif

TRS on stock unit is just ok. The groupset is more than adequate. Just need to ditch the wheelset (heavy) and the disc brake squeek like a sick cat. The only thing that remains stock on my victor is the frame.

For 2k, i'd rather take the dahon speed anytime anyday. Much more comfy.

Btw, 10-20km is not a lot of mileage on a bike. Any bike will take you through that distance no problem.
*
Thx bro,if like wat u said...
Den trs victor is a no go?
Coz don't plan to upgrade or change d parts in near future if can...
And u said u jz keep d body onli,which i don't like d design also...

It's adequate enough for 20km. But, as most people do, once they got their fitness through cycling, they will want to cycle longer distance. By then, they'll wish they had a better bike.

Buy the best your money can buy.  For me, the frame matters more than other parts. The TRS/JAVA/VOLCANO etc doesnt fold as neatly as the dahon/fnhon/tern. Personally, i'll choose the latter.

Having said that, l've done lots of mileage on my TRS, and it's still working just fine. If i one day think of upgrading it(again), i think i'll get a minivelo frame and transfer all the previous components to it. biggrin.gif

Ic,frame quality wise for java fit vs java pro 3 vs fnhon ka2018?
Btw,usually shop will charge how much and take how long to assemble a folding bike...
Coz need to count d total cost if i import one...

QUOTE(etigge @ Mar 2 2018, 07:32 PM)
From what I observe from the comments here so far, I deduct that you are just starting on this folding bike path. Also I can also deduct that you are the type that who wants to only buy ONCE and use it till the end. You are also one of those who don't like to do modding of any kind. Custom building is one of the solution but then to do so, you need to know what components do you really like, what kind of rides you will do now and eventually. Slopes, flats or both? This will determine the proper gearings to get. Also, think, will you be still riding after 6 months or a year and how far you think you will go. Have you hear or have friends riding, are you excited to hear what they do or where they ride?

Custom building is NEVER cheap. They are usually over 2K or 3Ks even for just a simple custom job. If cheap components are considered , why bother customizing at all, right? hmm.gif Also, thinking ahead , you will need to consider road bike components or mountain bike components. To ask every question from the beginning onwards, it will take a long time before you decide  tongue.gif  From my experience in this forum, the number of questions I answered.........................they will eventually do something else the moment they enter the local bike shop, hahahaaa. Bike shops thinks of target, profit margin and surplus stocks they still have but they seem to be able to convince new buyers more easily than us here.  blush.gif

I suggest you go for Java as this brand gives the highest specs for the lowest price with an acceptable frame and brand. Going for branded ones like Dahon, Terns with the same specs will almost double the price. Then there's the elite market which are Bromptons, Bike Fridays and Pacific Bikes which are priced even higher like someone always says here. " I rather go buy a kapcai ".  tongue.gif  Get the Java first and see how it goes after 6 months or a year later, then maybe you might go buy a Brompton straight away, many of my fellow rider friends did.

If you are in Perak, I can assemble the bike for you, no problem. Oh yeah, here's another suggestion on your choice of bike. Have you heard of Crius? For slightly over 2.5K , the dolphin shaped frame is equipped with the lightest and best specs. All components are made by Litepro.

Ya bro,u hit almost all d things in my mind...
Ride on usual road mostly, flat maybe?
Budget will set around rm1500...
So is kinda limited for a new bike...
Jz java pro 3,fit and d shop strongly recommended trs victor...
As d specs is about like java fit,but cheap-out some other parts like handle foam & etc...

Btw,java pro seems to be cheapear by rm100...
I wonder y?
D specs seems almost d same, with hollow crank...
Not sure about others...

QUOTE(etigge @ Mar 5 2018, 08:25 AM)
Re-mortgaged your home for a few kilos of tubes and metal parts....................hahaaaa. That's a bit far fetched isn't it?  cry.gif  Doing so for a automobile, maybe yes but bicycles.........unless you are nuts about Alex Moultons and their limited edition series. I know Billy here, the bike shop owner paid RM23,000 for his and still needs to wait 8 months for delivery. But his logic is for investment as he said, " Another few more years , it will even cost more ".

The subject leading to this tread was his first bike and he has budgetted 1.5K for his first venture. So, no need to buy a junk bike and then gets fedup with it because of the ride it gives and TOTALLY abandon riding altogether.

Many of us rides because we like to do it and many of us do not ride because the doctor told us to do so. No, we may not be smarter than a bicycle manufacturer but we do know what we actually want and the bike manufacturer cannot please all in general. They have to make many, many, many , many , many .................many, many  sacrifices to the quality and rights to make a bicycle affordable to most of the general riders. Like, skip the heat treatment process, steal other's design, hire cheaper un-skilled welders or painters, skip quality control procedures and so many more. So, if someone CAN AFFORD a better bike, why not, even if it is his first ride.  icon_rolleyes.gif

Ya,thx bro...
Basically i am leaning towards d java pro 3 cause of it design...
Regarding d body frame,is it a bad quality one?
Coz i see it comes with a hollow crank, better specs with cheaper price?
Maybe plan to get a Dahon Speed Falco if available...
Coz from what i understand from d discussion...
Getting a better frame & a frame that i like is a better choice...
As we usually upgrade parts, not frame...

Importing fnhon might be my last choice if i am not urgent in getting one...

Thx bro fatani & etigge...
I skip java pro & fit already...

Btw,now i think to find a good frame...
And start from there, chromoly frame mostly...
Since ira ride quality is not that good,i will skip it mostly...
Unless i am able to fine a used unit with good price...

Now thinking to import fnhon storm / dahon speed i think...
Budget raise to rm2000...
Regarding d dahon speed,something like P8 / D7 / D8 / Falco...
How to differentiate ya?
And d falco is d best?

How much roughly itu will cost to custom folding bike?
If i plan to import fnhon strom frame & okok 451 wheelset(i suppose is d rim & sealed bearing),both at rm1000...
Is d leftover Rm1000 enuf for d remaining parts?

Will train myself to cycle start from around 1 hr per day, till my stamina is stable den maybe will join group cycle...

Btw,is it normal for folding bike to have some ding ding, like brake cable hitting body sound,or some metal to metal hitting...
And ngek ngek ngek like d body kena bend sound with folding bike?
Both not alwaz,jz sometimes, maybe going over bumps...

can ask tcb2010

he already got the fnhon tornado frame. i also had setup fnhon tornado for my friend.feel good and on par with the tern accept on the handlepost part.

user posted image

imho,
u can get the cheapest verge frame that is verge n8 or get the used verge bike. swap the component and sell ur current folding bike. the best part about tern is the 3d handlepost. its heavy, but very sturd, stable and stiff compare to others. other than that, the locking mechanism are better than dahon. other part is not a big deal for me.

if u dont want to get the verge, u also can get the 3d handlepost at rodalink with cost less than rm600. whistling.gif

Thx bro...
Ya,looking for frame only...
Thinking to slap a latest 105 groupset in it...
Maybe a 406 wheelset, cause feel like d 451 on my java pro3 is kinda limited for d route...
Btw,where to get d Fnhon Tornado Frame for Cheap?

Hi Str33tboy,

Saw Sifu Azam mentioned bout me gotten the frame.
It's also partly due to Azam posted the Fnhon Tornado that he setup earlier that got me interested as well.

Yeah, its a great looking frame..love the Verge looks, and as i can't afford a Verge, this is the closest i can get to it.
So far has been using it like maybe 3 weeks ..and i dont have any issues with it like creaks, flexy or poor fold mechanism.
I ride almost everyday on it on short distance (total +/-200km so far) ..so i have a bit of run time on it to  comment a little.

Compared to my Dahon Vitesse, i felt its more agile, feels lighter on foot and definitely stiffer. Can't say if that is actually better but different. Geometry is a bit different.

I also inspected the the frame and its folding clasp, and i can say that i like the construction of the frame and feels up there with my Dahon..based on my limited experience. I agree with what Azam said about the good quality of the frame.
Only time will tell if it holds up well, but even Dahons still faced creaks issue and need tuning once a while.

I was tinkering with 451 wheelset idea for future, and ur thinking the other swithing to 406..haha.

You can PM me anytime if u wanna know more and will gladly help. I also gain knowledge from the sifus here.
I bought the frame from a FB seller, and i can direct you to him if ur interested in Fnhon Tornado or Crius Velocity.

Also, Azam's recommendation on getting the cheaper Verge variant sounds good too, if u really want a Tern name on it.

we discuss in pm bro...
