When you have a camera like the 1D weighing well over 1kg, you won't need IS assistance for up to about 1/40 and that is about 1/20 with IS assistance! Any moving object would look fuzzy already at that shutter speed even with IS assistance!
Without IS, you cannot do 1/8 when you have the needs... I tried 1/8 with the IS and it does work!
Ok la... dun say 1/8 la... I have the need to go down to 1/15 in order to gather more avaiable lights for the indoor pictures to looks brighter and IS really help. In fact, I dunno how to produce similar effects without IS....

hi Voip,
I am in a dilemma as to whether to get this EOS 30D or to wait for a replacement model. I feel I have outgrown my S3 IS and have told myself I would get the 30D by mid this year, but with the emergence of the EOS 1D Mk III with dual chips, I am wondering if CANON Would release a similar mid range 30D Replacement? Dual chips seems to be the NEW ERA in DSLR Evolution just like the Core-Duo in Computering.....
Advice pls.....
As to clear hesitation, there is only one way. Try the damn camera yourself! Shoot by your hands (not reading review), bring back the pictures and view at 100%.
I was just informed by Canon Management that there will be a launch for 1D mark III soon in MidValley. I will keep you guys updated and you can try 30D over there. Remember to bring memory cards.
The results will speak for itselfs... And after seeing the pictures, you will know what to do...

I move to Canon last December after a year with KM7D with 8 lenses...
After weighing my option with Sony laziness... I jump to Canon with 30D, 17-55/2.8 IS, 70-200/2.8 IS, 580EX in one day.... Sold off all my minolta and sony items.... what a great move...
My only gripe with 30D is, there is a 1D series always in my mind.... I want to have 1D AF speed and accuracy.....
You sound so familiar to a friend of mine. Are you actually Simon?
If you do not need the tripod collar on the 70-200, you can remove it le... It save some weight. I always want to do that... but fail to remove it. So now dun care la..
And I have the same mentality like you... The 1D. And IMO, both 30D + 1D can co-exist. I am thinking of 30D with EFS17-55 f2.8 IS and 1D on 70-200 f2.8 so we need no to change lenses during shooting.
I 'think' we need the higher writting speed and larger internal memory buffer of 1D while shooting with tele... because we usually frap frap frap with that. And with standard zoom (non-tele), usually only single frap.

imo, 30D replacement would not be coming out this year. It's stated by one of the Canon rep during the PMA07. besides, from what i've seen, each model will have a lifespan of at least a year and a half b4 it's being replaced.
get a 30D now.

your S3 investment is too high already for now

Agreed! Those D30, D60, 10D, 20D & 30D all has minimum market lifespan of 18 months.
And in fact, I am not sure on what else to upgrade on the 30D successor... 10 megapixels? Asking anyway more will direct conflict with other camera;
+ more fps -> 1D
+ too many pixels -> 1Ds
+ more internal buffer for more shots -> 1D
+ if cheaper -> 400D

Agreed! Buy! Buy! Buy!

but then 400 d seems to be better in some part of 30d
30 d wins on the iso3200 and fps 5. rest is in par with 400d...
I would really suggest the 30D rather than 400D. It just feel better on hand + the 30D viewfinder more confortable.... And you need both these factor when you are on assignment for long hours...
