QUOTE(wKkaY @ Sep 21 2020, 05:31 PM)
With any accident, the problem with looking for one obvious person to blame and hold accountable, is that it doesn't add to our understanding for preventing it in the future.

Think about it - there's a whole bunch of people involved in the leadup to that accident, and if any of them intervened and did something differently, the diver could have survived. For example, the diver itself, dive buddy, DC staff, trip leader, friends, OW instructor, training agency, etc.

If, instead, you ask why each person involved didn't do that, you will learn a lot more and hopefully apply it to your own diving smile.gif

Encountered one a few weeks ago... our dive started with a descent next to a wall, and moments later one of the divers lost consciousness at depth. Long story short, fortunately he got sent up and survived it. Buddy was a new OWSI who wasn't quite "switched on", but one thing she did right was to bang her tank for help. Had he been separated with no one around, it's 100% ggwp for sure.
*
I'm sure the lawyer defending the DM, DC will use the same argument in court... end up no one is accountable. But a life is loss anyway.
Plus we all sign the waiver form when going diving. I'm sure this document will be show... DM and DC can use to cover their ass.

Now already so much cover up... no news, no report... even the post on social media also got deleted... so basically no lesson learn
because all being cover up to not affect the industry.

Why pay for DC or DM service then... better just rent boat and tank and dive ownself.

I really don’t understand people that already long time didnt dive but so kedekut to do the refresher course first, or probably dc never ask when last dive and never recommend also. Just do the refresher course to refresh everything, safety first..
Encountered one ow diver that didn’t dive for years, go mabul and straight away want to dive and do advance,
First dive can’t descend, didnt even know how to descend.. he panicked and flapping around, instructor spends 8-10min to calm him down and to try again. Eventually decided and told he need to do refresher course first.
*
Ya i saw both cases...

1 friend kedekut don't want to pay for refresher keep on insisting ok, luckily DC kinda force it. e.g said only can do shore fun dive, which is basically like a refresher. and cannot go for boat dive.

Next recent case i encountered was 3 of us when for dive trip, 1 of my friend had 70+ logged dives but quite long about 2+ yrs didn't dive, so requested for a refresher to be on safe side.
But DM in charge said no need say can direct go fun dive, even though friend asked few times. But that time feel like the DC was understaffed and didn't want to spend the time to do a refresher for 1 diver only.

My problem is always fail to get someone attention, try making gorilla grunt sound, too tiring, and cant be heard.
Too lazy to bring the Tank banger stick, too many stuff already to pegang. ( i have the pointer with the metal shaker ball kinda stick)
I saw one dm last time got these squishy like a rubber duck thing (not a duck, idk what is it looks like). It making the same sound like the rubber toy duck sound like underwater. And just clip it to his bcd Shoulder buckle, small and didnt get drag around
Is it just like a normal rubber duck toy Or something else that just work underwater. anyone here know where to get that.
Or any other noise maker that you guys can recommend
*
Tank banger also doesn't mean you can get someone attention, many blur buddies and DM also.
In good visibility I bang tank like mad and also flashed torchlight... also cannot get some people attention.
e.g buddy swim in wrong direction - trying to get buddy attention, buddy missing and i wanted to get DM attention, eqp developed a leak and wanted to inform DM.

I need to swim and pull the fellow only he/she realize.

So basically if you get into emergency, then it's a matter of luck already. Hopefully someone realize you're in need of assistance.

Hi everyone, does anyone know if there is a deep diving pool in Selangor/KL open for dive training ?

Thank you
*
what kind of dive you're talking about... those Olympic springboard/platform diving or for freediving ?

Swimming pools aren't deep at all.. 4.5m is nothing if you talking about scuba... unless those mining pools

Thing is that, I needed to take leave for that. I would prefer spending my leave on an island plus doing the course. Thanks for the input though.
*
QUOTE(blackwhitechipsKL @ Dec 27 2020, 01:26 PM)
Doing on the island will require you to take leave, plus you'll be mostly stressed during the 4d3n on the island. Doing it in the city means you can spend doing it over weekends until you're confident, and go island repeat same thing in the sea instead of swimming pool, and you get to mostly relax on the island. I always recommend to split your sessions
*
I had the option of splitting it or doing it one shot on the island. I did it one shot at the island.
For my case it came down to cost (it was much more expensive to split, almost 50% more) and other diver friends feedback to do it one shot in actual open water.

At least for me swimming in pool or the sea it not an issue, so there was no fear of being submerged or fighting current and waves.
so to me no point spending more $$$ of doing it in a swimming pool first.

My GF who did the course with me is an ok swimmer, but has no experience in the sea was also able to handle it well. Of course she had some difficulty in the beginning with the heavy gear and fighting the current and waves at the shore.

Anyway, just my personal experience. It's different for everyone.

I enrolled DM course in 2016 at Tenggol, but failed at swimming and water treading doh.gif

Based on my experience, if you have plan to do side income, or even pursue instructor level, DM is the way to go.
If not, i suggest you take the Master Scuba Diver certification.
DM is a Dive Pro path, where you have to pay yearly license activation to continue generating income from diving (legally).

Things to prepare, as you mentioned, swimming as well as water treading. These 2 are the most difficult, for me at least.
*
I've no plan to be a DM, but curious what's the requirement for the swimming and water treading part ?

In the swimming pool, water treading is very tiring for me, can't do it for long, normally i rather just relax and float.

QUOTE(oran9e @ Jan 16 2021, 09:23 AM)
During DM certification, there are 5 waterskills exercises. Each exercise will be given maximum 5 points according to your performance. Minimum accumulative points to pass for all 5 exercises is 15pts.

For swimming, there are 2 exercises, 400m without swimming aids, and 800m with mask, snorkel, and fins. Each need to be performed nonstop. To get full 5 points, 400m is <6:30min, and for 800m is <14min. You will get 1 point for each if you complete it >13min and >21min respectively.

For water treading, need to do it for 15min, including hand out of water in the last 2 min.

Was hoping someone know the autopsy conclusion.

Did she pass away underwater thru drowning, suggesting an equipment malfunction, running out of air.

Or did she surface, but boat wasn't there due to strong current and she pass away due to exposure to the elements.

Hello all, would like to check if there is/are any procedures required if one is to return to usual diving activities after recovering from covid?

I understand that depending on the severity such as if the lungs are affected and so on, need to consult doctor?

Thanks alot.
*
depends which category you were in during covid infection.
did you require oxygen support or intubation in ICU ?

Otherwise many who had covid had gone diving back.

If you still concerned, just consult a doctor.

Using Suunto Zoop for 3 yrs +... i'm happy with the functionality, except for the fact it's large and bulky.

I'm unaware of the problem. At least i didn't encounter any issue.

I've checked it out and it does look very bulky, esp on a girl's wrist  sweat.gif Did you have any problems with the strap?
*

I won't recommend for girls... it's very large and bulky.
I cut the strap to make it shorter since no plan to dive with dry suits.
