I see that most people nowadays are crazy about the Saw films, so I thought I would open a thread about this movie. Screw the Saw movies, here's the real deal we should appreciate.

A stunning movie, in my opinion. Right from the start, the awesome opening credits, the viewer is sucked in, right till the final scene of the film. A lot of people have said the ending is "an explosive, mind-blowing, spectacular twist" but personally I dont think it's a twist at all, it aint that explosive or mind-blowing either, but still a pretty damn brilliant surprise ending. In all fairness though the film isn't centered on the ending itself. Everything else works. The visual style is really dark and moody and depressing, the music is great, good acting from everyone, tight script, and a razor-sharp direction by David Fincher. This is quite possibly visually the blackest film I've ever seen. I have never seen so much black in a movie before. The NIN and Bowie tracks in the opening and end credit are brilliant too.

It's not gory actually, since almost none of the killings are on-screen. All you see are afterviews of the murders at the crime scene. This would later on be shunned for the "all-gore"-ness of movies like Saw and Hostel and The Texas Chainsaw remake/prequel. Here everything is in your head. You don't have unnecessary gore at all. (Of course I'm not really saying gore is bad, but this is so much better executed.)

One of the best serial killer movies, ever. One of my favourite. Saw is nothing compared to this.

Its not you to decide like this. Unless you say Chermin is nothing compare to this then I agree. Saw has its own element of thriller...and they collection gross worldwide, along with its cult fan club, you cant say its nothing.

Se7en is good but it just so-so to my opinion.

Yeah, Saw isn't that impressive IMO. I didn't see what the big fuss was about.

The first Saw was badly acted (actually this applied to all 3 of the Saws) and the final twist was cheaply added in just for the shock effect imo. Also,

Why should you bring the box office gross into this? How a movie does at the BO has nothing to do with its quality... but I wouldnt call Saw a bad film at all. It's above average but nothing great.

hey man, I did it because I lent se7en to my friends and they came back telling me "wtf la, they never show the killings also, where got nice, saw so much better la. this one so boring... somemore so long more than 2 hours." laugh.gif

also, both films can be compared imo, since I think it was se7en that inspired Saw.

well said. I envy (oh no I'm a sinner!) you for having friends who can appreciate films. Mine have been MTVed... I just lent The Godfather to one of them, cant wait to see their response tomorrow. I doubt he can even finish the 3-hour film. laugh.gif

i tot Saw was quite good but I definitely loved Se7en, the way Kevin Spacey's character is played out and how truly he believes in what he does makes him an interesting villain and not just a cardboard-style murderer. Saw had it's main attractions in the gore and the twist, Jigsaw was wronged and he felt ppl didn't appreciate life after what he had been through meanwhile John Doe I felt was doing it for the purpose of practicing what his beliefs were, different motivations for both killers

Good movies are timeless. And of course there is a need to compare, since good movies set the benchmark.

If movie viewers, script writers, actors, directors, and critics do not compare, then we will just get more and more watered down crap aiming at nothing more than to make money at the box office.

Oh wait.........

I didnt really wanna compare anyway, but my friends coming up to me and saying "seven sucks. saw rocks" just made me do this... in fact I'm showing this thread to my friends. They wagered that no one will like seven over saw. Ha. laugh.gif

and it's not like these two films are incomparable. they do share similarities and I do believe Se7en spawned movies like Saw. but ok la, let's stop comparing since it's already a fact which is better. brows.gif

In Se7en, we visualize in our mind how the killer kills his victims. In Saw, we saw (no pun intended laugh.gif) how the killer kills his victims. In a way, I agree that it's difficult to compare movies because everyone's tastes differ greatly.

I, for one, prefers Se7en. Love the ending. Kudos to the three main casts. Kevin Spacey ftw!

actually I believe mentioning Spacey is a spoiler itself. Spacey himself suggested his name be removed from the opening credits, so that when people finally see him in the film, they will go "omg it's kevin spacey!!". biggrin.gif

Just for clarification, did the term John Doe originate from this movie? Or it's just coincidence?

BTW, actually it's kinda hard to compare Se7en with Saw, but no more comparing right? By itself, Se7en is definately one of my favourite crime/thriller movies, alongside Usual Suspects(got K.Spacey as well) thumbup.gif

i guessed that se7en has its moments...and so does saw (the first one only!)...but se7en was filmed and scripted well, while saw is more of a shocker...but then again, saw 2 and 3 just spoiled the entire franchise...sigh...

Not that i'll put both that movies in the same boat.

seven is a detective movie and saw is a slasher movie. I think both movies are great on its own. However, since these movies belong to different genre, it is quite hard to compare as both movies attract different crowd.

For those who prefer storyline over gore, seven is good for them. As for those prefer gore over storyline, then saw is a good movie.
