David Fincher's Se7en (1995), old, but way better than all Saw films

I see that most people nowadays are crazy about the Saw films, so I thought I would open a thread about this movie. Screw the Saw movies, here's the real deal we should appreciate.
A stunning movie, in my opinion. Right from the start, the awesome opening credits, the viewer is sucked in, right till the final scene of the film. A lot of people have said the ending is "an explosive, mind-blowing, spectacular twist" but personally I dont think it's a twist at all, it aint that explosive or mind-blowing either, but still a pretty damn brilliant surprise ending. In all fairness though the film isn't centered on the ending itself. Everything else works. The visual style is really dark and moody and depressing, the music is great, good acting from everyone, tight script, and a razor-sharp direction by David Fincher. This is quite possibly visually the blackest film I've ever seen. I have never seen so much black in a movie before. The NIN and Bowie tracks in the opening and end credit are brilliant too.
It's not gory actually, since almost none of the killings are on-screen. All you see are afterviews of the murders at the crime scene. This would later on be shunned for the "all-gore"-ness of movies like Saw and Hostel and The Texas Chainsaw remake/prequel. Here everything is in your head. You don't have unnecessary gore at all. (Of course I'm not really saying gore is bad, but this is so much better executed.)
One of the best serial killer movies, ever. One of my favourite. Saw is nothing compared to this.
9.5/10

The first Saw was badly acted (actually this applied to all 3 of the Saws) and the final twist was cheaply added in just for the shock effect imo. Also, » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « John Doe > Jigsaw. Added on April 2, 2007, 7:04 pmQUOTE(rEDs @ Apr 2 2007, 06:55 PM) Its not you to decide like this. Unless you say Chermin is nothing compare to this then I agree. Saw has its own element of thriller...and they collection gross worldwide, along with its cult fan club, you cant say its nothing. Se7en is good but it just so-so to my opinion. Why should you bring the box office gross into this? How a movie does at the BO has nothing to do with its quality... but I wouldnt call Saw a bad film at all. It's above average but nothing great. QUOTE(GhettoSuperstar @ Apr 2 2007, 07:14 PM) That you would even attempt to compare Saw to Se7en....................... hey man, I did it because I lent se7en to my friends and they came back telling me "wtf la, they never show the killings also, where got nice, saw so much better la. this one so boring... somemore so long more than 2 hours." also, both films can be compared imo, since I think it was se7en that inspired Saw. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « both killers commited their crimes because of their belief that their victims were sinner/not appreciating life, and subject them to torture. also, in the end the killer wins. QUOTE(GhettoSuperstar @ Apr 2 2007, 07:39 PM) I havent watch se7en in a long time, (thx for reminding me, shld go rewatch it sometime soon), but as i recall, the endings itself reflects the quality of both movies. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « In Saw, the twist ending was surprising yes, but you couldnt care less about who jigsaw is/was.
Personally, i didnt give a damn if Jigsaw was the guy lying there all the while or if he was George Bush, because the film didnt make me feel that it was all that important. A friend who watched it with me were gasping at that scene, but the rest of us went, "yeah so?"
In se7en however, the twist was not so much of who the killer was, but how he made Pitt's character commit the last murder, and thus fulfilling the seven sins. Now that was shocking, twisted, and horrifying all at the same time, and it MOVED me.
Emotion is the BIG difference between the two films. well said. I envy (oh no I'm a sinner!) you for having friends who can appreciate films. Mine have been MTVed... I just lent The Godfather to one of them, cant wait to see their response tomorrow. I doubt he can even finish the 3-hour film.

QUOTE(kobe8byrant @ Apr 2 2007, 10:53 PM) dude pls la..dont start comparing this to that or nothing will be ever good la. se7en is good but its so yesterday. its just like saying Infernal Affairs/ Departed will never touch Brando's Godfather. different kettles of fish I didnt really wanna compare anyway, but my friends coming up to me and saying "seven sucks. saw rocks" just made me do this... in fact I'm showing this thread to my friends. They wagered that no one will like seven over saw. Ha. and it's not like these two films are incomparable. they do share similarities and I do believe Se7en spawned movies like Saw. but ok la, let's stop comparing since it's already a fact which is better. actually I believe mentioning Spacey is a spoiler itself. Spacey himself suggested his name be removed from the opening credits, so that when people finally see him in the film, they will go "omg it's kevin spacey!!".

Nah I'm sure the John Doe term existed long before the film.
