depend on the spec
some of them using fully cooper sink, such those optiplex 170L
some using tower sink(alloy + cooper) like my poweredge 800 server

but dunno what the brand of sink.. sweat.gif doh.gif

inside the cpu for desktop only have 1 fan.... it a big 5" fan with low rpm pulling air to proc heat sink and chipset heat sink.

I think most current new Dell system is using the BTX design... really cool, only 1 fan to blow at proc and to exhaust is enough... thumbup.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

I'm very impressed with their cooling BTX tower! Love the cool temperature! Envy la...we spent so much money on good heatsink and yet, dell can do it with only a proc fan and exhaust

hmm.gif what I mean is, it only have 1 fan, which blow toward proc HS (err...do I remember correctly, or it is exhaust fan which suck the cool air toward the proc and then exhaust... blink.gif ) and exhaust (at front casing) directly out from casing... icon_rolleyes.gif

wait till you see how dell packed a C2D E6600 into a compact sub-SFF Optiplex 745 case that even carries its own power supply unit.

it runs unbielevilably quiet and stays cool most of the time in normal ambient temperature

lemme take a snap when i'm in office tomorrow

edit: the SFF has hdd, DVD, and even an FDD to boot. generous 8 usb ports and even legacy parallel and serial ports. it has 4 ram banks (heck, it's a full sized mobo) and is able to run dual channel.

most large manufacturer pc's like dell's, hp and lenovo all run at least 2 low rpm fans, one as the exhaust fan and another fan on the intake, the instake fan doubles up to cool the cpu and also the power regulators on the mobo. normally no fan on the northbridge...

but i reckon it runs cooler as their internal design draws air from outside the chassis to cool down the proc, instead of our DIY pc's which normally still draws already warm air inside the chassis..my 2 cents...

Nice...pls do take a snapshot! A bit regret not getting Dell PC,got a DIY pc instead... but heck, this is my first time buying a 3rd party heatsink (hopefully Scythe Ninja) and mounting it myself. Everything also got 1st time right, at least I learn something... icon_rolleyes.gif

Dell SFFs have always been rather cool (in both ways). Of course by having BTX the cost is a little higher (went to see the rig on dell.com and its quite costly also)

dell's are quiet cos like most manufacturers (unlike enthuasiast)..... its design to operate within a certain thermal envelope... for enthuasiast... we want them as cool as possible. That's the difference.. that's why it's quiet

there's this big fan with Low rpm to suck air from front towards CPU which is attached with a really big heatsink, and exhaust to the back of the casing.

see pic below.... Precision 380.

the SFF with a 3.5" hdd, and everything else is laptop component.

the ruler is there for comparison

it's a BTX design. 1 fan for the cpu hsf and another one for the puny 300w true power psu

notice the C2D tag there.

betcha they cant do it on a pentium d 820 system laugh.gif

I still remmember that dell is one of the first to introduce direct exhaust piping in their desktop series

back then most co. still fumbling with internal HSF which draws hot air from within the casing.

but too bad back then the components ran cooler
so it became a luxury item...sweat.gif
