I heard about the latest round of layoffs from Hess. Good luck guys/gals out there, at least the market is picking up so getting another job might not be as tough.

Hess cuts 300 jobs worldwide

Let's assume that just before being ushered to the interview room, the job applicant is required to fill a job application form, which may contain a section on current employment (current job title, and current salary).

Going by your logic, can I leave this section blank? Leaving this section blank may not leave a good impression to the hiring manager, and HR manager conducting the interview.
*
Yes I leave it blank. They can ask me and I will usually say that I don't discuss that in the first interview. If insisted I will give a range.

I guess that's the followup after their EPCIC warranty period is over.
Good news for Barakah.

Brent crude fell below USD70; now is USD66.

All is still not well in oil & gas.
*
WSJ was saying that at current production rates, there'll be an oil surplus by 2019. Look for crude prices to go lower smile.gif Unfortunately not great news for retrenched people like me looking to get back into the industry though biggrin.gif

I recall about 1+ years ago, the strategy for the company that I worked at was based on US$50 oil. If a company cannot be profitable with $60+ oil after so many years of severe cost cutting it really shouldn't be in the oil and gas industry.

Assume a situation during offshore installation, whereby the client directly instructs the subcontractor to perform the offshore works, without relaying the instructions first through the main contractor.

Yes, the client has no legal authorization over the subcontractor, since the contract was signed between the client and the main contractor, and another subcontract was signed between the main contractor and subcontractor.

Then again, as you said, it is tricky situation for the main contractor not offend the client. If the main contractor somehow prevents the client form controlling the subcontractor, the client site representative may "retaliate", by not signing the daily progress records, which may hamper the payment claim to be sent by the main contractor to the client in the future.

Sigh, what would be the proper solution to this dilemma?  rclxub.gif

I was that client biggrin.gif last 1-2 years. We had to work with the subcontractor directly as the offshore installation was already behind schedule and having an extra layer between us and the subcontractor would've made communications far more difficult. Yes I did keep the EPCIC in the loop in all communications, legality is one thing, but we kept reminding all the stakeholders involved that the main objective for everyone is to finish the project on time so that everyone can get paid. If me contacting the subcontractor directly would get work done on time and under budget, then that's what we would do. On the subcon side, they dutifully reported back to the EPCIC all they did.

There were tense situations, EPCIC wanted to overcharge us a few million USD for work that was actually done without adding man days to the already packed schedule. Happily nobody was offended for long and I enjoyed eating kimchi biggrin.gif

DJIA, Nasdaq, commodities, BTC all are falling in tandem. It's not specific to crude. Not great for the global economy in general.

Any idea how large is the contract size?

If I recall it's 3 WHP, should be larger than phase 2

I wonder what is it about Malaysian assets that's making these companies want to exit ?

Or is it simply that other assets around the world are providing better returns ?
*
Where I was before, the pressure was from US based investors wanting Hess to focus on US based assets instead
Can't comment on the Petronas factor though

I think it's more of a derogatory description. Kalau kat US they use FOB = fresh of the boat

If you have symptoms don't travel offshore. The OIM will understand, it's part of EHS/HSE/SHE
Get well soon!

going out for major turnaround for start up activities... i have read my company policy is any symptom should just stay at home. But there is also a disclaimer that says unless it is bussiness essential or deemed critical.. dunno who to refer to know, my line manager ask me find out myself.
*
I suggest that you check with your safety officer.
If you're the only person who can do that role then someone needs to have a long talk with planning/ops.

May 2020 contract Brent is now at $26 - how long before we start seeing MSS/VSS in Malaysian O&G?

Some companies have not yet even fully recovered from the 2014 crash...
*
Yep. We're facing the double whammy of low Brent/WTI price plus low demand for oil/gas over the next few quarters... Not looking good.

Weak sector + weak economy = more job rejections. Most recently by a PSC yesterday. Oh well, have to continue looking for opportunities.

As a fresh graduate of petroleum engineering.. how do i get into oil and gas industry? it seems O&G companies only hire experienced engineers
*
Where did you graduate from? Most universities have career services that can you put you in touch with recruiters in your chosen field. Sometimes they have university alumni helping out too. This should be your first step.

But I'm going to echo what someone already said, bad timing and it's not getting better for some years to come. All the best!

With MCO and derurat , look like the local project "can" be postponed.

Also, on the oil demand side, will drop very significantly local because no travels.

those that own petrol station will face tough time. Near highways, especially.
*
MITI has announced that oil and gas is an essential industry and allowed to continue. Hopefully the confirmed projects will continue
But yes, local demand will drop, I expect the MCO will be lifted sooner rather than later

I'm still hoping to get a job soon biggrin.gif

Anyone know if O&G companies would hire fresh grads for data analysis positions? I am actually currently working as a PROTEGE for an O&G company too and I assist my team with research and analysis on the oil sector specifically. For those who donโ€™t know what PROTEGE is, it is the equivalent of MYSTEP for government sector.

My job basically consists of researching and consolidating data, and analyse them before visualising them in form of graphs, charts, etc for the stakeholders. So yeah, I was planning on maybe continuing my career in O&G after this since I already have knowledge in this domain but I canโ€™t seem to find companies who are willing to hire fresh graduates ๐Ÿ˜… Need advise from experienced people ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป
*
Certainly not a stupid question.

Where I was before we did hire analysts (junior positions) for analysis. I worked for one of the upstream operators but we were lean so data analysis wasn't a standalone role and was parked either under economics or sometimes production systems.
