I feel inferior to be honest, but it's just the way we express ourselves. If we Malaysians are more expressive, there is no doubt that we can outperform the Kiwis in this sense - education wise la

But in terms of the work opportunity, I must say that when compare to Oz, the Kiwis are less discriminating, they do not look at your skin colour or status. Moreover, even an international student will be given a year's working permit. However, I'm not too keen on working in NZ, as the lifestyle is different, we are nocturnal beings remember? Our job would too require lots of communication, the Malaysian accent differs a lot from the Kiwi's, therefore some may have the perception that our English is bad. I do however had some Kiwi friends that said that my English is good, not a bad thing, but not a good thing either, it shows that how ignorant are they about our spoken English, not to mention written English.

I must also stress that although English may not be our 1st language and our vocabulary is limited. Our grammar and spelling is however much better than theirs. Some don't even understand when one of my malaysian friends told them that, "this semester is very taxing".

Don't be discourage over it, since you're a PR, it should be easier. Like me, you may change your thoughts about staying back at NZ to work.

I heard it is quite good for a Law school as well, from a friend of mine from Auckland, ironically studying Law at Vic.

hi there guys. i have been doing research about NZ and i'm gonna explode from information overload. rclxub.gif

so i would like a very simple and direct question from any of you guys who got the expertise or knowledge. which university is good for studies related to mass communication in NZ?

i'm currently looking into UNITEC and AUT, any other options that i can look into? smile.gif is it difficult to gain a position to study in the unis there? it's intimidating to read about their 'limited places', you see. i will be using my TARC diploma to attempt a credit transfer, which some counselors told me is a pretty good move, but i don't know as i choose to leave a little bit of doubt to myself when i'm talking to those counselor fellas.

and for UNITEC and AUT, are they well known in the industrial world?

the limiting places only applies to a few courses, such as Architecture, Law and Medic, other than that I don't think there's such requirement

UNITEC isn't exactly a government sponsored university, thus more people would prefer to go to AUT instead.

may i know what difference does that make? as in, costs, recognition?
can you give a rough description of the distance between these two institutes? are they really that far apart? unsure.gif

i know it isn't officially recognised as a university, but i am seeking a practical approach to studying communication, and not just by books and papers. so far AUT and UNITEC are the ones that interest me. smile.gif

UNITEC's so-called 'park-like' campus sounds appealing to me btw. tongue.gif

No idea, I'm not from Auckland, but I've seen AUT though, it's located in the city centre.

Communication in which major? AUT might be good for you

According to the PBRF 2007, Victoria University has the best psychology school for that year. That's all I can give smile.gif Hope it helps

Dunedin? Boring? Get your facts right before making such statements. I have a few Dunedin friends who told me that they prefer Otago over other universities in the northern part of NZ. Unless you are a very reserved person and I found that 9 out of 10 Malaysians here only hang out among themselves and not mix with the Kiwis.

Student life in universities such as Canterbury and Dunedin according to them are much better than the student life in Universities located in Auckland and Wellington, even though the universities are located in the city.

A friend of mine who is doing her PhD in Otago said that people in the university know each other better compare to the other universities and every Friday and Saturday, one can see students hanging out in bars, drunk, etc all over the town. Which is why some people call it the "student town".

Honestly, I am gutted that only Lincoln University and Vic are the only 2 that partners with my previous college, if not, I would've jumped on the chance to go to Otago.

Dictionary: Boring means tedious or not interesting. Which is pretty subjective.

You haven't even been to Dunedin yet and you have already made such conclusions. Like I've said, it is not exactly a boring location as there are probably more activities around the town compare to the other New Zealand universities.

You'd be surprised to find many Aussies complaining about Australia being bored even though many perceive it to be a more happening country than New Zealand. I find Wellington bored to be honest, despite it being the 2nd largest city in the country and the capital city of New Zealand.

Added on October 22, 2008, 12:26 pm* IF you are looking for a peaceful lifestyle, probably you should also consider places like Palmerston North, Christchurch as your destination

To be honest, even some of my Malaysian friends who can't even complete a simple sentence without making any grammatical errors can get 6.0, my cousin who didn't study for her IELTS got 7.0.

Even New Zealand universities encourage that students who got 6.0 to take up an English Proficiency Program because the requirement for the IELTS is too low.

I've only been to both Rotorua and Auckland, stopped by Taupo just to take some photos, not many places. Although some Kiwis may say that both Auckland and Rotorua are the shit holes of New Zealand, in a joking manner, I still miss my trip back at Rotorua, a quiet town, not to mention the stinky sulfuric smell. Nevertherless, the trip to Whakarewarewa, the Agrodome, the hot bath museum, etc was quite a good one, and not to mention the clean air in New Zealand. I might be following one of my Kiwi friends to Taranaki and bunk at his place, overnight or what.

Oh yea, try Napier too.

I heard that South Island is a lot nicer than the North Island, whether is it fact of fallacy, I will get the chance to experience it this December. Even though I'm only staying there for 5-6 days, I'm gonna visit the ever popular Milford Sound.

I don't know about other halls, but mine doesn't and I'm moving out very soon. Can't wait to do that.

my flight's landing on Christchurch and I'll stay around there for 1 day at least, then I'll drive to Queenstown. I'm going with my family members tongue.gif

Kaikora indeed, but a bit pricey to my liking la.

The Kiwis can't really spell, I can guarantee you that most Malaysians can spell much better as well as write nicer sentences than the Kiwis

Try to email Teo Shen Wei of the Victoria International department, he's a Malaysian and he replies emails real quick. I had no problem with that but I don't know about their new policies though

I am done with uni, but will be staying here for a few more months. So the letter that you got is it conditional or unconditional?

You need an unconditional offer letter in order to be fully enrolled.

I'll add you mate
