B.Pharmacy is only open for domestic students in New Zealand.

Not true. I knew international students doing pharmacy at Otago.
See Regulation 1(i) http://www.otago.ac.nz/courses/qualifications/bpharm.html

Auckland Uni, on the other hand, only takes domestic students.

Sorry for that I didn't know.
As I only went through the University of Auckland University, it clearly states that BPharm is only for domestic students only.

I mainly walk if it's nearby, take the bus if it's really far away.
Public transport is pretty efficient.

depends where r u going to study and depends how much u wanna spend..

auckland, most probably u will end up walking and public transport as cost to own a car overthere quite expensive. parking fees and the limited space.

if in chch and otago uni, u can choose both.. but i only used public for few times, then bought a car.

you can use ur driving license for one year. and then after one year, if you still in nz, you need to change, but if you go out of the country, it will reset back to 0.

I've seen those. I prefer to own a bike rather than having a car is because of all kind of fees. I need a more efficient transport to get around town because i am planning to get a part time job there to finance my bike loan if possible. Perphaps, what i need is the learner license.

Yes i am acknowledged regarding the straight convertion of MY to NZ driving license. By the way i am going to study in UNITEC in Mt.Albert campus north island. Owning a car or a bike price differ only by a fraction, but im looking at the low maintenance and fees applied.

Hi guys, I would love furthering my studies in New Zealand. Currently I am aiming for University of Auckland and the course I want to pursue is Mechanical Engineering (maybe civil too).

How's the quality of teaching in engineering and the reputation of University of Auckland? I do know the life in New Zealand is very pleasant. A nice place to live in biggrin.gif

P.S. I heard that the place is a rugby frenzy country. Is it true? shocking.gif

1) What is called "football" in Malaysia is called "soccer" in NZ. To muddy the waters a bit more, "football" in NZ is what Malaysians call "rugby". But yes, this is a rugby mad nation. They're hosting the rugby world cup this year.

2) What post secondary qualifications do you have? NZ's Engineering course is decent. Its not as good as the top US universities, but it gives you the fundamentals and knowledge. Many have graduated there with no issue.

In NZ, Canterbury is better regarded for their Engineering courses than Auckland. People in the know will choose the former if they really want to pursue Engineering.

Hi there. I'm interested in furthering my studies in New Zealand. Auckland to be exact and will be studying architecture.

I would like to know, do New Zealand unis accept LUCT's diploma for credit transfer? I heard that the University of Auckland is one of the hardest to get admission for the architecture course in NZ.

Anyone care to shed some light on this issue? smile.gif

1. Currently doing Masters in NZ, University of Auckland. Bachelors from University of Otago.

2. Yes, but that depends of where you are. NZ is really very beautiful, some parts more than others (eg Queenstown), but generally you have to get out of the cities first. I've always thought that it's a pity there isn't a uni in Queenstown - would be the world's most beautiful uni if there is. South Island more beautiful than North Island.
Note that I use the term 'city' losely cos what the Kiwis call 'city' sould only qualify as a small town somewhere else.

3. Yes, quite safe. People are still quite honest and violent crime is rare.... though it's growing. But like anywhere else in the world, you need to be careful - lock your doors, don't leave valuable stuff lying around, don't walk in dark alleys by yourself etc.

4. Varies between places (Auckland the most expensive) and the type of lifestyle you want but you should budget around NZ$12,000 to be safe.

5. Part-time: shouldn't be much of a problem. The unis have a service called Student Job Search which helps students find part-time jobs. Minimum wage is around $10, minus 19% tax. Tax here is high and EVERY dollar is taxed, even interest from your savings account. International students are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week during term time.

Full-time: Depends on whether you mean summer job or 'real' graduate job. Summer job should be quite easy, just use SJS to look. If you're good/lucky, you might get a summer internships. Those pay quite well. International students can work full-time during the summer break.

Graduate job: Not too hard provided you have a decent CV - work experience (any job, doesn't have to be relevant, Kiwis have a part-time work culture), extra-curriculars, and decent grades. Most of my friends managed to find jobs relatively easily.... just need some time and patience.

NZ graduates are granted a 6 month work visa on application. This can be extended to a full work permit once you find a full-time job related to your degree. Makes it easier to find job cos employers don't have to worry about work permit applications. Once you get a job, getting a PR is an easy next step.
NZ PR is better than Australian cos it's indefinate - once you've stayed there under PR for 2 years, you can leave anytime you want and never come back. Almost as good as citizenship. Not like Aus where you have to stay for 2 out of 5 years to keep it. They might change their immigration laws in the future though.

6. Other basic info: NZ is a country of 4 million people and has a landmass is the size of Great Britian. Wellington is the capital, Auckland is the largest city. The native people are the Maori. The Maori name for NZ is Aoteroa - the Land of the Long White Cloud. Asian population is about 7%, congregrated mostly in Auckland.

There are 8 unis - University of Auckland, University of Otago, University of Canterbury, Victoria University of Wellington, Massey University, University of Waikato, Lincoln University and Auckland University of Technology. The first 4 are considered the better, more established ones. A couple of the others have their own specialist fields. All are public universities. Some Malaysian private colleges twin with NZ unis - Inti with Otago, and I dunno who with Vic and Lincoln.
There are also polytechnics, many of which have degree-granting powers in specific fields. Not sure if there is any twinning.

This is a rugby-mad country. If you like other sports, you're going to suffer deprivation.  sad.gif

Any course/uni in particular that you're looking at?

If you're an international student that's studying in NZ, you'll be given a 20 hour work limit per week.
For budgeting and all, why don't you check out the university's website? They usually have the basic info on there and since NZ costs vary by location, (cities like Auckland, Wellington are more expensive than places like say, Otago) it'll give you a rough idea of the budget needed for annual/weekly expenses.

I'm actually interested in knowing more about Uni of Auckland actually. Applied last Monday through Selset. Anyone can tell me about the atmosphere in the university, specifically around the City Campus?

thanks. I will check it out. by the way, I apply from selset too.
I have read through the immigration New Zealand website and it seems that doing the Diploma course in chef is eligible in the long term skill shortage list and short term as well. hmm.gif This will work out well in the long term if I intend to migrate there. rclxms.gif Anyone living in NZ, please confirm that info. notworthy.gif sweat.gif
I don't want any trouble after graduation. sweat.gif My hard earned money will be wasted for that. sweat.gif

Which part of NZ?

At the current exchange rates and in Auckland, your rent alone would be almost that much, if not more.
