Also, the LCD doesn't have a live TTL picture, I hope you know that

Small LCDs shouldn't make much of a difference here since you're just going to be viewing shots quickly.
Yeah, I too use the LCD screen on my Oly E-330 mainly just to zoom in into particular areas of a shot quickly to check if the autofocus did its job correctly or not, or if its generally acceptably sharp.
Added on March 26, 2007, 10:29 pmOne thing about using old made-for-film lenses is that they tend to fool a modern DSLR's exposure meter by about an extra +1/3 to +2/3 EV stops. Just dial down the EV accordingly in the priority modes or you risk having overexposures.
I used an old 70-210mm f/2.8-f/4 fully manual Olympus OM mount Vivitar lens, and now I recently got an incredible 50mm f/1.8 Olympus OM prime lens to play with.
If you get the D40, you'll end up in the same situation as me. All Olympus E-series lenses are those with motors built-in and are no lighter (in fact, usually heavier) than older for-film lenses of the same focal length. More expensive for sure, and a very limited selection. Thank goodness Zuiko glass is top-notch, even for the kits.
