I'm getting a DSL very soon and Im really confused between the esey to use and more potable D40 and the fast 350D,,

The thing I don't like about the 350D is its handling! it's not comfortable at all ! and the small LCD,

And the thing about the D40 is the auto focus thingy, though Im thinking to get just one additional lens, telephoto for portrait

I cant make up my mind seriously !!

Anyway I have my dad's canon lenes they are back to 80s and I wonder if I can use them with the 350D ? this will be a big advantage but how would they perform anyway ?

Canon is like that, if you wan better handling you gotta add battery grip then very very chun feel...end of the day it's speed still faster then Nikon D40 (no offen to Nikonion ya)...

About the lens , i am still learning but i know NOT all lens is compatible even it's among Canon...got to check the series though....

The D40 will take most Canon EF autofocus lenses with some conversion factor. What you show are Canon FD manual lenses and these will not work with the 350D.

If you're thinking of portrait, the EF 50/1.8 II will convert to around an 80mm lens, just nice for a short tele portrait. DOF and sharpness are amazing on the 50mm.

Also, the LCD doesn't have a live TTL picture, I hope you know that biggrin.gif Small LCDs shouldn't make much of a difference here since you're just going to be viewing shots quickly.

Yeah, I too use the LCD screen on my Oly E-330 mainly just to zoom in into particular areas of a shot quickly to check if the autofocus did its job correctly or not, or if its generally acceptably sharp.

Added on March 26, 2007, 10:29 pmOne thing about using old made-for-film lenses is that they tend to fool a modern DSLR's exposure meter by about an extra +1/3 to +2/3 EV stops. Just dial down the EV accordingly in the priority modes or you risk having overexposures.

I used an old 70-210mm f/2.8-f/4 fully manual Olympus OM mount Vivitar lens, and now I recently got an incredible 50mm f/1.8 Olympus OM prime lens to play with.

If you get the D40, you'll end up in the same situation as me. All Olympus E-series lenses are those with motors built-in and are no lighter (in fact, usually heavier) than older for-film lenses of the same focal length. More expensive for sure, and a very limited selection. Thank goodness Zuiko glass is top-notch, even for the kits.

None of the lenses can be used with any EOS systems, be it film or digital. Those are FD lenses whereas EOS systems now use EF lenses.

Thank you guyz so much for all the information,

I know about the LCD is only for playback and sittings,,and yeah this is the only drawback in DSLR's ,,but Olympus has just made a live LCD !

I'll get a d40 and AF-S telephoto lens if I find a good deal,,

Canon has also followed the Live LCD concept in the form of the 1Ds Mark III.
I hope they can also do the same for their future low and mid-end models.

BTW, now I mostly use the optical viewfinder (95% of the time) of my E-330, not the Live View. But when you really need it, Live View proves to be a godsend!
