[Serious and sincere question]

Dear all,

As per title, I am keen to take on the professional studies and certification on Project Management to better equip myself in my career path.
Having researched on this, I found that there are 2 different certifications available, PMP and PRINCE2.

Would like to seek advise from those who understand the above two different certifications, on the following aspects:
1) Prospects of getting PMP/PRINCE2 certified
2) The costs of getting the certifications (In Malaysia)
3) The pros and cons for both certifications
4) The differences between both certification
5) The popularity of both certification in Malaysia (and Asia countries in general)

Your kind advice is sincerely appreciated.
Have a pleasant day ahead.

Just to inform you, that I have not taken PMP or PRINCE2 in any way. But my company recently did training by EMX Consulting on the Fundamental of Project Management which explains the whole process of PMO and the difference in certificates.

1. PMP is US certified which is primary PM cert for North America, Canada, Middle East and SE Asia. PRINCE2 is UK certified only has influence across Europe and Australia.

2. PMP for:
- Professional Degree
- 4500 project hours
- 36 project months
- 35 contact hours

- Associate Diploma
- 7500 project hours
- 60 project months
- 35 contact hours

Exam Fee
USD555 (Non-Member)
USD405 (Member)
(PMI Membership fee USD129)

3) Both are the same probably the modules differ a bit. PMP is more widely recognised which is highly recommended.

4) Recognition, most countries adopt PMP.

5) read no. 1

Hello mate.
Thank you for your kind sharing, you have given me a great clarity on this.

And the decision is apparently leaning towards taking PMP based on the comparison points.
One additional question that I have with regard to the project hours, the candidate intended to take on the PMP course must have accumulated a total of 4,500 project hours/36 project months?

I myself is not in Project Management role, the motivation/drive for me to take this course is to equip myself with better knowledge and skills for my career. smile.gif

Its 4500 project hours and 36 project months. You have to have proper documentation so that you easily fill up the form to register. For project hours is not the duration of the project, it is based on working hours, so if you work on the project typically 8 hours a day, you accumulate those 8 hours per day until you get 4500 project hours. Project months is the duration of the project, a project can be done in 3 months not taking consideration to hours of work on the project. So you accumulate each project duration.

You do not have to be in a project management role to take PMP. As long as you are involve in the project in any way, though you must state your role and your involvement with the project if I am not mistaken. After submission, they will go to the process of verifying your qualification and everything. Hopefully this clarifies a few things. PMP is not a course, it is a certification. If you want to take a course for knowledge and skills, you can start with contacting EMX Consulting, they provide training.

PMP is more difficult then Prince2

For Prince2 you can actually take the foundation course first before go to Practitioner.

Foundation examination consists of 75 question passing mark is 50%. (multiple-choice) for 1 hour
3 days course and the fourth day you can take the exam if you are ready.

As for PMP

The certification exam has 200 multiple-choice questions, and you have four hours to complete it.

Passing mark is 61%

So yeah to me PMP seems harder. One of my colleague took a month off just to study PMP.

Took a month off just to study PMP?
Certainly this is tough.

Care to share which institution that your colleague went for to get the PMP Course? smile.gif

You will need to also attend a week course at a certified education center before you can take the exams. Most of the exams questions comes from this course. I actually just study a night before the exams and passed it the 1st time. TO maintain your PMP certification, you will need to obtained 60PDUs in three years. This can be involved in projects, giving or attending relevant talks/seminars, etc. You need to document all this down.

Thank you mate for sharing with such great clarity with me.
Further question, I am not doing Project Management to be specific, will PMP Course be a good course for me? With the intention to equip myself with better work skills. smile.gif

Depends what path you need to go. Simple as that. PMP basically equip you with the skills to handle any projects, though its pretty IT based. WOuld you be doing any projects in the near future? You also need to know what is the requirement needed to take the exams and what you need to do to maintain your certification. For me, I might lose my certification as I dont do project now. But it was helpful for me to climb the ladder.

I am in the area of Supply Chain and Logistics, that said, the projects that I handled are all supply chain based. I am not in the role of Project Manager specifically, as I am doing Operations (core area).
Will PMP be helpful in this case?

Is there any chance of you doing projects in SCM? Previously I am also in SCM and there were lots of projects, big and smalll, hence PMP was really useful for those big projects. You can start small with Six Sigma at your workplace to work on small changes and eliminate waste and then work to expand on it.

Been handling projects in SCM, this is actually the motivation of me exploring to take PMP because I see the need to approach project management in a more structured methodology. smile.gif
Glad to hear that it helps, reckon that I should now be seeking for this course seriously.

Hello friend, good day to you.
I have neither done PMP nor Prince2, as my job is not directly relevant to Project Management smile.gif

Are you in the Project Management field friend?

My friends want easy, they all took PRINCE2

I took the difficult way, I have PMP

Within my circle, so far I am the only with PMP and a handful of PRINCE2

Taken PRINCE2 foundation and practitioner, kinda regret it as it has become very costly.
You need to pay £60.00 (£50.00 + VAT) to subscribe to AXELOS and maintain 20CPD. That's like RM320 per annum. I am taking PMP next and just let my PRINCE2 Prac expire

You need to pay to renew every 3 years and also maintain PDU also for PMP

That I know but at least PMP is well recognized. Agile is the future! I think we need to start a thread on Project Management as I can't find any relevant thread to help about it

It will be good to start a thread on this, I would like to get know about Agile too. Usually Agile is used for Software Development. But I am not in IT / Programming Industry.

I will find out more later when if I have time
